ARC Review: Split Second by Catherine Coulter

Split Second
Author: Catherine Coulter
Publication: Putnam Adult (July 19, 2011)

Description: The number-one New York Times-bestselling author returns with another pulse-pounding thriller.

A serial killer is on the loose, and it's up to FBI agents Dillon Savich and Lacey Sherlock to bring him down. They soon discover that the killer has blood ties to the infamous and now long-dead monster Ted Bundy. Savich and Sherlock are joined by agents Lucy Carlyle and Cooper McKnight, and the chase is on.

At the same time, Agent Carlyle learns from her dying father that her grandfather didn't simply walk away from his family twenty-two years ago: he was, in fact, murdered by his wife, Lucy's grandmother. Determined to find the truth, Lucy moves into her grandmother's Chevy Chase mansion. What she finds, however, is a nightmare. Not only does she discover the truth of what happened all those years ago, but she faces a new mystery as well, a strange ring that holds powers beyond her ken.

As the hunt for the serial killer escalates, Savich realizes he's become the killer's focus, and perhaps the next victim. It's up to Lucy to stop this madness before it's too late.

My Thoughts: The story begins with Savich breaking up a murder/robbery attempt at his nearby convenience store. And the action ramps up from there. The story is like real life. The characters don't just face one crime at a time. While Savich, Sherlock, Lucy and Coop are busy tracking down the Black Beret killer who turns out to be Ted Bundy's daughter, Lucy is also investigating a mystery closer to her home.

Lucy loses her father to a sudden heart attack. But before he dies he relives out loud a memory of seeing his mother kill his father. Lucy moves back to the family home to investigate and discovers her grandfather's body in a trunk in the attic. This rocks her world because she can't imagine her beloved father keeping that sort of thing a secret. She has no idea why her grandmother would kill her grandfather until she gets a letter that her grandfather has placed with his lawyer for delivery to her after her father's death. She learns that her grandmother was obsessed with an ancient ring that had some magical powers. The grandfather has taken the ring from her and set it aside for Lucy to have after her father's death. Lucy is surprised to learn that the wearer of the ring can turn back time. She can go back 8 seconds and redo the past.

Lucy doesn't know what to do. She isn't telling anyone about the ring even though she is a lousy liar and all of her colleagues know that she is keeping something from them. Also she and Coop are becoming close. She had kept away from him because she believed that he was a playboy type. Now that they are working together on the Black Beret killer case, she is learning that her image of him was wrong.

The action is fierce in this thriller but for me something is missing to make it a memorable read. I liked the story but I didn't get emotionally involved in it. It was a story I read with my mind as I tried to figure out how our heroes would capture the killer. But it wasn't a story that got to my heart or emotions. It was a cotton candy sort of story for me -- tasty while it lasts but with no staying power. I would recommend this one if you are looking for a great summer beach kind of read. If you want a story that lives in your memory, you will have to look elsewhere. (Of course, I seldom want a story of a serial killer to live in my memory.)

Favorite Quote:
She was crying silently when her father suddenly yelled, "Mom, what did you do? Why did you stab dad? Oh my God, he's not moving. There's so much blood. Why, mom?"
I received this book for review from Putnam. You can get your copy here at Amazon.

Reviews: Plan B and I Dare by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller

Somewhere around 1999 Sharon Lee and Steve Miller found a new publisher for their Liaden Universe books. Meisha Merlin picked them up, re-released long out of print titles, and bought new stories in the Liaden Universe. Fans were especially eager to know what would happen next for Clan Korval.

Meisha Merlin republished Agent of Change, A Conflict of Honors, and Carpe Diem in the omnibus edition entitles Partners in Necessity in 2000. Meisha Merlin also published two new Liaden novels -- Local Custom and Scout's Progress -- in an omnibus entitled Pilot's Choice (2000) to give fans and new readers the stories of Er Thom and Daav and their lifemates.

In 1999, the long-awaited Plan B was published by Meisha Merlin. In Plan B, the clan is scattered but gradually coming together on Lytaxin. Lytaxin is the home planet of Miri's clan - Clan Erob. Val Con set it as a rendezvous point because Miri's history should have been unknown to the Department of the Interior. However, the Department of the Interior knew that Clan Erob was an old ally of Korval's and so fomented a revolution on the planet. Val Con and Miri arrive just after the revolution has been put down.

Shortly thereafter, the Yxtrang see the disorder and decided to try to capture Lytaxin for its own. A remnant of Miri's former mercenary company is still on planet and Miri and Val Con get involved in the plans to throw the Yxtrang off the planet.

Shan and Priscilla arrive to meet with Val Con and find themselves in the middle of a space battle. Shan is separated from the ship, leaving Priscilla as captain, and finds himself on the planet aiding Miri and Val Con. Meanwhile Nova is also on Val Con's trail. When she finds out where he is and what is happening, she joins forces with the remains of Miri's old Unit and they head to Lytaxin too.

I Dare (2002)

This book brings the Agent of Change story arc to its conclusion. The Yxtrang have been defeated on Lytaxin but not without cost. Val Con was very severely injured and requires a unique and experimental healing by his Clutch Turtle brothers before he can bring the battle to the Department of the Interior on Liad.

Meanwhile, Pat Rin yos'Phelium is working on his own to balance accounts with the Department of the Interior. He has been told convincingly that all the rest of his clan has been killed. Believing that he is on his own to balance these murders, he works to gain allies and resources to take on the Department of the Interior. He retreats to the low-tech and backward planet of Surebleak (which happens to be the planet of Miri's birth) and begins his revenge. One of his first allies is Natessa the Assassin who is a Sector Judge for the Juntavas.

Also rejoining the clan on Lytaxin is Daav yos'Phelium whom we last saw in Mouse and Dragon who left the clan to go live on human worlds to try to balance the death of his lifemate. News of the danger to Clan Korval has brought him back to Liaden space.

And on Liad itself, Anthora is in immediate danger due to actions of the Department of the Interior.

Shortly after I Dare was published with its tantalizing teaser ending with Theo Waitley coming to Korval with a sort-of complicated problem, Meisha Merlin went out of business leaving them owing Sharon and Steve lots of money and leaving fans wanting more.

Check my next reviews of Fledgling, Saltation and Ghost Ship to find out what happens next in the Liaden Universe and what Sharon and Steve chose to do.

June 2011 in Summary

June was a wonderful reading month for me. I managed to read a book a day which is especially impressive when you consider that I worked through June 7 and traveled all day on June 8 and didn't really concentrate on reading until June 9.

Check out my spreadsheet to see all the details. I list all the books I read there and indicate which of my 2011 challenges they meet.

Highlights:
  • Of the 11 YA books I read, 5 were by debut authors
  • 17 of this month's books were ebooks.
  • I re-read a series of 10 science fiction books on my Kindle
  • 12 of the books I read were romances but only 2 were paranormal romances
Books read: 30
Pages read: 10,602

Jan. 1 - June 30: 135 books and 43,658 pages read

I have reviewed all but one of the books I read in June though some of the reviews haven't been posted yet. I didn't review the biography William and Kate: A Royal Love Story by Christopher Anderson but I did learn a number of interesting details.

My favorite reading activity this month was my re-read of 10 books in the Liaden Universe series by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. These are prime comfort reads for me because they are a wonderful combination of romance and adventure in a well-developed future world.

Books added to the TBR Mountain: 69
  • 58 are still TBR
  • 20 are books for review
  • 38 were ebooks with 9 of them being free
TBR Mountain: 1111

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? (July 4, 2011)

t's Monday, What Are You Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.  It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

I was a reading machine this week. The cool, dreary weather made reading a perfect activity. Also the push to read a book a day in June also encouraged me to read. I think I had my own personal readathon going on.

Last Week I Read:
I started by reading a couple of books that I had for review.

Split Second by Catherine Coulter is the latest in the FBI Thriller series. It was a good romantic suspense novel. My review will be posted on July 7 and the book will be published on July 19.

Lost Voices by Sarah Porter is a young adult debut novel that was both lyrically written and heartbreaking. It is the story of abused girls who turn into mermaids. My review is here. The book will be published on July 4.

Next I decided to complete my re-read of the Liaden Universe books by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller.
These three books - Fledgling, Saltation and Ghost Ship - tell Theo Waitley's story but also bring her story into the larger story arc that began with Agent of Change. I will be doing a group review of these on July 9. I've been reading these on my Kindle. Ghost Ship isn't out until Aug. 2 but I have the eARC from Baen Books. I am looking forward to seeing Sharon and Steve at an author signing at Uncle Hugo's Science Fiction Book Store at the end of August. You can bet I'll be bringing all of my not yet autographed books to them.

Then it was back to review books because my latest from Amazon Vine arrived.
Summer's Crossing by Julie Kagawa is an ebook novella exclusive from her Iron Fey series which I am really enjoying. This one is free for the Kindle. My review will be posted on July 9.

Squish: Super Amoeba by Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm is the first in a new middle grade graphic novel series by the creators of Babymouse. It was cute and I think it will go over well at my elementary media center with the young boys. My review will be posted on July 4.

Jane Jones: Worst. Vampire. Ever. by Caissie St. Onge is her young adult debut take on vampires. This one goes more for the humor as the main character is perpetually a gawky sixteen who also happens to be blood intolerant (allergic reaction, hives, and diarrhea). This was a great light read. My review will be posted on July 7.

Then, before tackling more review books, I read a couple that I had on my physical TBR stack so that I could write some reviews for Ms. Martin Teaches Media.
Trial by Fire by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is the sequel to Raised by Wolves and continues the story of Bryn who is the sixteen-year-old human alpha of a pack of young werewolves. The pack is facing threats from a rival pack and from a coven of human psychics. There is a lot of adventure in this very good story. My review is scheduled for July 16.

Haunting Violet is by Alyxandra Harvey and is a departure from her Drake Chronicles. I really enjoyed this historical fiction story about a young girl in Victorian England who assisted her mother who was a fake medium only to find out that she herself really could see and communicate with ghosts. She has to solve the murder of Rowena who has chosen to haunt her at an English country party. My review will be posted on July 14.

Then it was back to review books. I received Called Home: Two Hearts Answer from the author Gloria Schumann. This story didn't really match the style of books that I enjoy the most. While it was romantic suspense, it spent way too much time on the inner thoughts of both of the main characters and sacrificed both romance and suspense to do so. My review will be posted on July 14.

Currently Reading:
I was sent the ARC of Spell Bound by Kelly Armstrong by Liza at Dutton and was very glad to get it. I am a big fan of Armstrong's Otherworld books. This is the penultimate book in the series and reunited most of the characters from the earlier books in this current adventure.

Next Week: My Kindle will get a workout as I read a bunch of books that I have for review.
Luck of the Devil by Patricia Eimer is from Entangled Publishing via NetGalley. It is a young adult book about the daughter of the devil who is rebelling by trying to be good.

Ward Against Death by Melanie Card is also from Entangled Publishing via NetGalley. This is a young adult/adult crossover title about a young necromancer in a fantasy world.
Dragon's Pupils: The Sword Guest by Martin Chu Shui was a young adult book pitched to me by the author. I am a fan of dragons and said yes. It is by an Australian author and based on Chinese mythology.

Merciless by Diana Palmer is an eARC from Harlequin via NetGalley. I have read hundreds of Diana Palmer books but haven't read one for quite a while. I am eager to see if she still has her magic for me.

Then, while the Kindle is charging, I plan to read a couple of sequels that recently landed in my mailbox.
Heartless is the latest in Gail Carriger's The Parasol Protectorate series and is a great blend of steampunk, romance, and paranormal fiction.

Kitty's Big Trouble by Carrie Vaughn is the latest in the Kitty Norville series of urban fantasy and it has werewolves!

What did you read? What are you planning for this week? I am always eager to find out about new books and to add them to my TBR mountain.

In My Mailbox (July 3, 2011)

The weekly In My Mailbox post is hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren. It is fun to see what everyone else gets in their mailboxes, shopping bags, and library visits. Click on the link to The Story Siren's site to see the rules and join in the fun.

I guarantee that your TBR pile will grow when you see all the wonderful books everyone gets. You will discover lots of great blogs and lots of books that you won't be able to live without.
This was another week when I added too many things to my TBR mountain. But there were so many interesting free books this week. I added 8 books to my Kindle. Four of them were free. These were the ones that were free when I downloaded them.
Lord Demon's Delight by Gia Dawn is an erotic historical with a very nice cover.

Giving Chase by Lauren Dane is my obligatory "abs" book of the week. It is also romantic suspense.
Too Big to Miss by Sue Ann Jaffarian is a mystery about the murder of a plus size woman.

Spiderwork by LK Rigel is an erotic fantasy and the sequel to Space Junque which I also added this week.

These are the ones I bought for my Kindle this week.
Betrayal's Shadow by KH LeMoyne got a good review on my friend Bev's blog. So I had to add it to my reading stack.

Space Junque by LK Rigel was purchased because I got the second book in the series free and wanted to have the whole series.

My friend Bev also convinced me that I needed to have Bonded by Blood by Laurie London. This is a vampire romance.

Bridesmaid Lotto by Rachel Astor was a book that caught my attention either on someone's Teaser Tuesday or Waiting on Wednesday post. This humorous novella about winning a spot as a bridesmaid in a society wedding caught my interest. And the $.99 price sealed the deal.

I also got some print books this week.
Heartless by Gail Carriger is the most recent in a series that I find both amusing and inventive. I can't wait to find out what happens next for Alexia and the other characters in The Parasol Protectorate.

Kitty's Big Trouble by Carrie Vaughn was also a "must add". This is one of my favorite werewolf series.
Eleven Scandals to Start to Win a Duke's Heart by Sarah MacLean is the latest in her Regency romances. These are wonderfully romantic and fluffy reads perfect for vacation reading.

I was also wonderfully surprised when I was asked to review Spell Bound by Kelley Armstrong. My ARC arrived this week. I am a big fan of the Women of the Otherworld series and can't wait to get to this one.

That is what got added to my TBR mountain this week? What did you get in your mailbox?

Reviews: Agent of Change, Conflict of Honors, and Carpe Diem

These are the next three books in my re-read of the Liaden Universe series. I am re-reading the series in order of internal chronology. It happens that, though these books were written first, they are about the children of the characters in the first bunch I read.

Agent of Change (1988)

Original 1988 Cover
This is the story of Val Con yos'Phelium who is the heir to Clan Korval and who was trained as a Scout and then co-opted by the sinister Department of the Interior to be an agent of change. He is on a Terran planet to assassinate the leader of the Terran Party which hates all non-Terrans. He is successful and gets away clean until he is drawn to the sound of gunfire and rescues a young woman from a group of criminals.

Miri Robertson is a former mercenary and former bodyguard from the world of Surebleak. She is definitely from the wrong side of town. She is also part Liaden though she doesn't know it.

She and Val Con band together to escape the Terran Party that is after him and the Juntavas who are after her. Along the way they are helped by the Clutch Turtle Edger and his brothers. Edger had previously met Val Con and make him a brother. He is quick to adopt Miri too when he sees that she and Val Con are lifemates.

2002 Reprint cover
Conflict of Honors (1988)

Priscilla Mendoza is an exile from her home world of Sintia and also a dramliza (wizard). She has been working as a cargo master on a Liaden ship until she was attacked and left on a frontier world because she suspected the trader and ship captain of dealing drugs.

Shan yos'Galan is the master trader and ship captain of the Dutiful Passage which is the flagship of Clan Korval. He hires Priscilla to work for him for a number of reasons. One of the reasons is that he is involved in a "balancing" with the ship captain who abandoned her.

The two get to know each other, fall in love, and have many adventures - including attempted murder and piracy - while trying to balance accounts with the evil Sav Rid Olanek.

2002 Reprint Cover
Carpe Diem (1989)

This story continues the adventures of Val Con and Miri. When we left them they has made a jump in a very damaged spaceship in which they were left of to die by the Juntavas who captured them, to an interdicted world in order to escape capture and death from the Yxtrang. This story tells about their adventures on this world as they learn the language, learn the culture, and make friends. It also gives them time to get to know each other better and time for Val Con to find ways to disable the conditioning that was forced on him when he was made an agent of change.

Meanwhile, in the greater world, Clan Korval searches for Val Con and learns more about the aims of the Department of the Interior. We learn more about what Liaden wizards can do when we see Shan's sister Anthora able to feel all the members of the clan no matter how distant and Priscilla able to leave her body and journey to where Val Con and Miri are to leave messages.

At the conclusion of these three books we leave our heroes in love but in great danger. Plan B is in effect. The Clan has left Liad and are scrambling to reconnect and to learn more about their enemies. Loyal readers waited and waited. Sharon and Steve were dropped by their publisher because they didn't sell enough books which left their loyal readers hanging.

Sharon and Steve did develop a web presence as soon as there was a world wide web. Their fans quickly found them and become the Friends of Liad. Sharon and Steve fed their fans' hunger by writing and self-publishing annual chapbooks with Liaden stories.

It wasn't until 1999 that they found a new publisher and could continue the story. Next up for me are Plan B and I Dare which were the two books they wrote for their new publisher - Meisha Merlin.

2002 Edition
I am in the midst of a re-read of all of the Liaden Universe books by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. I am trying to read them in order of the internal chronology of the series and I have come to Agent of Change. This is actually the first book that was written in the Liaden Universe. It was originally written in 1988. It is a science fiction romance that is also filled with adventure and danger.

Here is the product description:
Two tough-but-tender characters with a bright future—if they live that long.

Terran Miri Robertson was a mercenary, but she retired to a cushy job as a private bodyguard. What she didn’t know was that her client had powerful enemies. Now he’s dead, and they’re after her.
Beginning:
The man who was not Terrence O'Grady had come quietly.

And that, Sam insisted, was clear proof. Terry had never done anything quietly in his life if there was a way to get a fight out of it.
Friday 56 (estimated):
Liz snorted, eyes softening. "How much trouble are you in?"

"More'n last week, less than next. You know how it goes."
1988 Edition
This one is actually a deal for the early publications of the Liaden Universe books. You can get a "new" copy from Amazon Marketplace of the 2002 publication of the book for only $11.00. I wouldn't though because you can get a recent printing from Sharon and Steve's current publisher - Baen Books - entitled The Agent Gambit which also includes the continuing adventures of Miri and Val Con in the story Carpe Diem for $9.52.

Of course, you can also check out eBay and get a copy of the 1988 edition for a buy it now price of $14.99 if that sort of thing excites you.

As for me, I have the 1988 version, the 2002 version, the 2000 omnibus Partners in Necessity which includes this story, The Agent Gambit and a copy of the book on my Kindle. This is a series that I re-read frequently. I also want to support the authors and never want to be without a copy of this book.
