Sunday Post/It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (Sept. 7, 2015)

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.
It's Monday, What Are You Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.  It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

Other Than Reading...

School started this week for teachers. Between workshops, work time, and Open Houses, I was in one school building or another for 41 hours from Monday through Thursday. Then there was the time I spent on my computer at home. I got up Friday morning and was glad to have a "couch day."

I didn't have big plans for the Labor Day weekend. I was invited to a friend's daughter's wedding on Saturday which was very nice. It was good to catch up with some old friends that I don't see nearly often enough. It was also nice to just spend time at home reading and relaxing.

I'm as ready for the kids walking in the door on Tuesday as I can be and excited to be starting my 40th year as a school librarian/media specialist.

August Report

I read 33 YA and Adult books this past month. Twenty of the books were review books. I read sixteen young adult books. Fifteen of them were review books. I read 11,807 pages. I have reviews scheduled through the first two weeks of November and have finished reading all my September, October and November releases.

I added 47 books to my stack in August and have read five of them. Sixteen of my new books were books I received for review.

I am not doing very well on either of my goals. I wanted to reduce the number of books on my TBR pile. I currently have 2152 books there. Some have been there since 2008. My second goal was to try to read all the adult books I bought in 2015 this year. Currently there are 56 that I haven't read yet.

Read Last Week
I got Silent City by Carrie Smith this week from Crooked Lane Books. I really enjoyed this mystery. The main character is just coming back to work after a battle with cancer and her first case is the murder of a school principal. I loved trying to figure out the murderer along with the main character. My review will be posted on October 7 for this October 13 release.

Currently
I am currently reading When Gods Die by C. S. Harris. It is the second book in the Sebastian St. Cyr historical mystery series which I just discovered this summer.

Next Week
I hope to get a chance to read Way of the Warrior which is an anthology with stories by a number of authors I enjoy.

I also want to read Without a Summer by Mary Robinette Kowal which continues her Glamourist Histories series. I have been enjoying this historical fantasies.

ARC Review: Primal Force by D. D. Ayres

Primal Force
Author: D. D. Ayres
Series: A K-9 Rescue Novel (Book 3)
Publication: St. Martin's Paperbacks (September 1, 2015)

Description: Passion is always worth fighting for…

Jori Garrison trains dogs for Warrior Wolf Pack, which provides service animals for disabled veterans. Four years ago, she was wrongly convicted of a crime--thanks to her no-good ex- fiancĂ©. Now she just wants to live her life in peace with her beloved dogs. No men, no complications. But it's hard to play it cool when a lethally hot male is on her tail--and the attraction is fierce, mutual, and dangerous….

PRIMAL FORCE

Lauray "Law" Batisse is a Military Police veteran who was wounded in Afghanistan. Haunted by the loss of his K-9 partner in combat, he's reluctant to accept a service dog named Samantha into his life. But once he meets her trainer--the gorgeous Jori Garrison--he can't fight his primal instincts. And neither can Jori. This sexy alpha male might be the only man strong enough to unleash her desires. And when unseen enemies start hunting them down, he and his new K-9 partner might be her only hope…to survive.

My Thoughts: Jori Garrison trains dogs for wounded Veterans. She learned how when she was in prison. She was convicted of drug pushing via circumstantial evidence. Her cheating ex-fiance had set her up before dying in a car accident. Now, she is training dogs and trying to rebuild her life.

Lauray Batisse was a military policeman whose K-9 companion died at the same time Law was hurt by an IED. Law lost his left leg and had other injuries. He's trying to get back to his job as an Arkansas State Trooper but PTSD has made him a candidate for a service dog.

Samantha is the dog. She is a mix of golden retriever and poodle, has a rusted-red coat, coal-black nose, floppy ears, and an enormous curling tail. Law notes that it looks like a cheese doodle. He is very reluctant to take her as his service dog partly out of loyalty to his K-9 Scud and partly out of his feeling that he ought to be able to deal with his PTSD without her.

When Law and Jori meet they are attracted to each other but Law makes it clear that it can only be a one-night stand. He was raised to believe that he couldn't do relationships. But it seems like Law and Jori kept getting pushed together. Jori has to go to him to give him and Samantha some more training. Also an investigation that Law is during intersects with Jori's court case. Law agrees to help Jori find out the truth about how she came to be convicted.

The story has a lot of action and some sizzling romantic scenes as Jori and Law learn to take a chance on each other. This was an excellent romantic suspense novel. I really enjoyed the chapters that Samantha narrated about her alpha too.

Favorite Quote:
The urge to reach out and soothe, even to apologize, was so strong he felt the pain of restraining himself. His fists clenched and his chest ached. He'd never felt regret whether he was taking or rejecting a woman. And never, even when he knew he was wrong, had he considered apologizing. What the hell was going on?

Book Review: Lady of Magick by Sylvia Izzo Hunter

Lady of Magick
Author: Sylvia Izzo Hunter
Series: A Noctis Magicae Novel (Book 2)
Publication: Ace (September 1, 2015)

Description: Sylvia Izzo Hunter brought “both rural Brittany and an alternative Regency England to vivid life”* in The Midnight Queen, her debut novel of history, magic, and myth. Now, in her new Noctis Magicae novel, Sophie and Gray Marshall are ensnared in an arcane plot that threatens to undo them both.

In her second year of studies at Merlin College, Oxford, Sophie Marshall is feeling alienated among fellow students who fail to welcome a woman to their ranks. So when her husband, Gray, is invited north as a visiting lecturer at the University in Din Edin, they leap at the chance. There, Sophie’s hunger for magical knowledge can finally be nourished. But soon, Sophie must put her newly learned skills to the test.

Sophie returns home one day to find a note from Gray—he’s been summoned urgently to London. But when he doesn’t return, and none of her spells can find a trace of him, she realizes something sinister has befallen him. With the help of her sister, Joanna, she delves into Gray’s disappearance, and soon finds herself in a web of magick and intrigue that threatens not just Gray, but the entire kingdom.

My Thoughts: This second book in the Noctis Magicae series was as wonderful as the first. Sophie Marshall is a second year student at Merlin College and married to Gray who is a lecturer there. While she very much enjoys the chance to learn about magick, she does not enjoy the prejudice and attention that is paid to her as one of the few female students and the long lost daughter of the King.

When Gray is offered a position as a visiting lecturer at the University in Din Edin in the country of Alba and Sophie offered a position as a student there, they are eager to accept. However, Alba and Britain are separate countries and relations between them are somewhat tense. Sophie loves the university and is glad to meet and make friends with other female scholars. But the political situation isn't good. The land is suffering from some ills - crop failures and illness in some animal herds - and magickal interference is being blamed.

Tensions escalate when it is learned that the next Chieftain of the clans, Lucia MacNeill a fellow student of Sophie's, has become betrothed to Roland, Sophie's half brother and second in line to the throne in Britain, there are protests that threaten to grow into riots. The political factions that see this as Britain's attempt to conquer Alba are very unhappy.

Meanwhile, Joanna who is Sophie's sister is busy in London learning diplomacy from her guardian Sieur Germain de Kergabet who is an adviser to King Henry and Lord President of His Majesty's Privy Council. Joanna is on the inside knowing about the marriage plans of Roland, who has a monster crush on her, and Lucia MacNeill. Joanna is also planning a visit north to visit her sister and Gray.

Shortly before Joanna's arrival, Gray is kidnapped though, at first, it is assumed that he has been called home because of his father's illness. Time is lost because of the need to give him time to travel from Alba to the south of Britain but when a second letter is received, Sophie knows that something is very wrong. She learns that other foreign mages have also disappeared. She is determined to find her husband. In fact, she must find her husband because the longer he is away from her the more sick she becomes. Their marriage had linked their magick together. If she can't find him, they will both die.

This was a wonderful story. The world building was amazing. I loved the combination of magick and political intrigue. I also loved the growing relationship between Gray and Sophie as they adjust to being married. Sophie is a wonderful character who has immense magickal talent but no desire to use it for political gain.

This book will be going on my Keeper Shelf along with the first book in the series - THE MIDNIGHT QUEEN.

Favorite Quote:
No assembly since that first one had been so dramatically disrupted by attempted poisonings, calls for rebellion, duels, or magickal catastrophes; this must of course be accounted a blessing, but Joanne could no help feeling that a ball featuring none of these elements lacked excitement.

ARC Review: A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn

A Curious Beginning
Author: Deanna Raybourn
Series: A Veronica Speedwell Mystery (Book 1)
Publication: NAL (September 1, 2015)

Description: In her thrilling new series, the New York Times bestselling author of the Lady Julia Grey mysteries, returns once more to Victorian England…and introduces intrepid adventuress Veronica Speedwell.

London, 1887. As the city prepares to celebrate Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee, Veronica Speedwell is marking a milestone of her own. After burying her spinster aunt, the orphaned Veronica is free to resume her world travels in pursuit of scientific inquiry—and the occasional romantic dalliance. As familiar with hunting butterflies as she is fending off admirers, Veronica wields her butterfly net and a sharpened hatpin with equal aplomb, and with her last connection to England now gone, she intends to embark upon the journey of a lifetime.

But fate has other plans, as Veronica discovers when she thwarts her own abduction with the help of an enigmatic German baron with ties to her mysterious past. Promising to reveal in time what he knows of the plot against her, the baron offers her temporary sanctuary in the care of his friend Stoker—a reclusive natural historian as intriguing as he is bad-tempered. But before the baron can deliver on his tantalizing vow to reveal the secrets he has concealed for decades, he is found murdered. Suddenly Veronica and Stoker are forced to go on the run from an elusive assailant, wary partners in search of the villainous truth.

My Thoughts: Move over, Amelia Peabody, there is a new Victorian eccentric in town. Veronica Speedwell loves to go on adventures hunting butterflies and attractive foreign men. Now that her aunt has passed away, she has no ties keeping her in England. But when she returns to her aunt's cottage after the funeral, she surprises an intruder who is searching the place and who attempts to kidnap her. She is rescued by Baron Maximillian von Stauffenbach who offers her a ride to London and answers to her questions. He is convinced that she is in deadly danger and deposits her with an old friend of his Stoker.

Stoker is grouchy, disheveled and living in a warehouse down by the river surrounded by his natural history specimens. He isn't eager to be a refuge for Veronica but owes Max and thus agrees. Veronica and Stoker clash for a number of reasons. She questions the accuracy of his labels on some of his specimens and, worst of all, cleans the place up because she prefers a tidy organized environment. When the baron is murdered, Veronica and Stoker want to solve the crime but the police have decided that Stoker is a suspect in the crime. The two wind up fleeing the city.

On their way out of town, Veronica is approached by Edmund de Clare who offers to save her from Stoker. And while they are in hiding at a traveling curiosity show, a groom with suspiciously soft hands and refined speech named Mornaday also offers to rescue her from Stoker. Veronica wonders why she is suddenly drawing so much attention.

Orphaned, illegitimate Veronica has a secret past of her own. Those secrets are very threatening to some people who would either like her dead or who would like to control her. Veronica has to find a way to neutralize the situation to save both Stoker and herself.

Veronica is a wonderful character. She is a free thinker. She seems oblivious to the danger she is in. In fact, she acts likes she's ten feet tall and bullet-proof. She has a confidence that borders on arrogance and absolutely no tact. She is quite smart and has no need or desire to be under any man's protection. She is anything but a typical Victorian woman of the gentility.

I loved the relationship between Veronica and Stoker. Their arguments and other conversations were filled with wonderful dialogue. I liked the way he came to treat her as an equal partner and I liked the struggle between them until he did. Stoker is a man with secrets that Veronica would love to probe but she is giving him time to share them.

I can't wait to read more books in this new series to find out how their relationship grows and find out what new mysteries they solve.

Favorite Quote:
"I mean that we have been so busy running hither and yon we have not considered the baron's murder properly. Murder is an act of chaos. It lies with us to bring order and method to the solution of the deed. We are scientists," I reminded him.

"I am a scientist. You are a dilettante," he returned with as much hauteur as a man in a bath sheet could manage.
