It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (February 7, 2022)

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.  It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

I will be combining my YA and adult reading and purchases on this one weekly roundup.

Other Than Reading...

This was a rather busy winter week for me. It snowed a couple of times leaving about 5 inches of new snow behind. I had an appointment for lab work but convinced my brother that he ought to drive me to my appointment. I still haven't driven my car since early December and likely won't until the end of this month.

I learned about CAWPILE on one of the blogs I read last week and thought I should give it a try. I spent a good part of the rest of the week customizing it to my liking and adding in all the books I've already read this year. I'm not really a big fan of giving books star ratings since I think enjoyment of a book is so individual, but I'm giving it a go. I do like some of the other available charts very much. I already keep a reading log on Google Sheets but haven't tried to make my own charts. I'll likely continue to use both my own Sheet and CAWPILE going forward since it only takes a couple of minutes to enter a book in both now that I've caught up.

After seeing the speed of my friend's computer when we were sitting side-by-side last week, I decided it was time I upgraded my very old laptop. I've had it since 2014 and it has given great service. I didn't realize how slow it was! My new touchscreen laptop arrived from Amazon Sunday morning, and I have been busy getting it set up for me. I've been transferring my iTunes library for hours now, but it is finally more than half-way transferred. Next I'm transferring my ebooks and pictures. Since I switched from a Dell to an HP, I have to find where everything is stored. I didn't think it would be too different since I am already running Windows 11, but I was wrong. (I'm writing this post on my old computer. Maybe next week I'll be using my new one.)

January Reading

I read 33 books in January including 18 audiobooks. They had 11,160 pages and (according to CAWPILE) 179 hours of listening. Twenty of the books were mine including 7 from TBR mountain and 4 rereads. I read 13 review books this month. I read one print book this month which is very unusual for me since I greatly prefer ebooks to the extent of almost always buying a Kindle copy even if I own a print copy.

I added 38 books to my LibraryThing collection this month which includes 17 new audiobooks and 9 new review titles. I didn't buy any print books this month. In most cases, if I bought the audiobook, I also bought the Kindle copy. In three cases, I already owned and read the Kindle copy. Twenty-one of the new additions are still on the TBR pile.

Among my 2379 books marked "To Read" in LibraryThing, 39 were added in 2008 when I began using LibraryThing. I am gradually reading and reviewing those. I would like to read or discard all of them before the end of 2022.

Read Last Week

If you can't wait until the review shows up on my blog, reviews are posted to LibraryThing and Goodreads as soon as I write them (usually right after I finish reading a book.)
  • Fair Trade by Sharon Lee & Steve Miller (Review; May 3) -- This is the newest release in the Liaden Universe series and the third book in the Jethri Gobeyn story arc. I really love this series and never tire of finding out more about the universe. My review will be posted on April 26.
  • Front Page Murder by Joyce St. Anthony (Review; March 8) -- This is the first in a new historical mystery series set during World War II. The characters and depiction of the time period were very good; the plot was a little weaker because I found it predictable. My review will be posted on March 2.
  • If You Ask Me by Libby Hubscher (Review; March 8) -- This was an entertaining contemporary romance with engaging characters and some depth in the plot. My review will be posted on March 5.
  • Don't Get Close by Matt Miksa (Review; March 8) -- This was a complex and twisty thriller which I found engaging. My review will be posted on March 3.
  • The Blessing Way by Tony Hillerman (Gift) -- This is the first book I grabbed from my mystery grab bag Christmas present. I enjoyed this first book in the Joe Leaphorn series and really liked the setting and Navaho beliefs that were woven into the story. My review will be posted on March 8.
  • Archangel by Sharon Shinn (Kindle & Audiobook) -- I bought the audiobook when Audible had a $5 sale even though I read this one many years ago. I enjoyed this fantasy/science fiction story very much during this reread/listen. My review will be posted on March 17.
  • Deadly Justice by William Bernhardt (Gift) -- This was my February choice from my Christmas Grab bag of mystery books. It was an entertaining thriller by a new-to-me author. Despite being third in a series I haven't read, I found the story easy to follow and the characters well-developed. My review will be posted on February 16.

  1. New laptops are fun! I'm surprised that yours lasted from 2014! I usually get 5 years max out of mine! Of course, I tend to use mine quite a bit, so they may just wear out. Have a great week! - Melinda @ A Web of Stories

  2. I'm on my other laptop at church, so this is Lyn Perry - thanks for stopping by my blog and I wish you well as you clear out your TBR pile. Do you plan to just drop some books from your list and not try to get to them?

  3. Enjoy your new computer. I need to get mine upgraded. I got mine the year I retired, 2018, and it's time.

I like using the book log that provides data. Next year I'll consider CAWPILE.

  4. I am going to check out CAWPILE, too. Hope you enjoy your new computer. We bought new ones in December. Still getting used to a couple of things, but like it overall.

When Darkness Comes and Built to Last both caught my eye. Hope you enjoy your books.

Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog today.

  5. Can't resist just popping in to see what you are doing and reading! I don't record my books or journal them or anything, the blog and Goodreads eats enough into my reading time!

  6. Congrats on the new computer! And we have some snow here too, but it's just been mostly cold.

I'm very curious about the new Blake Crouch!

  7. Oh yay for the new laptop! My very first one lasted me almost 10 years, I think it started running slower on me after 9 years...it was close to 10, I upgraded myself, but then that laptop just gave me so much grief that I updated again maybe after 3 years?? I think I've had my current one since 2018. Just the other day it was acting wonky, but after a restart it seemed to go back to normal. I'm hoping it continues to hold up for me as I really like it still! Lol.

Nice lineup of reads! Those are all totally new to me ones but I hope you enjoy them all!

    Here's my Monday Wrap-up

  9. I have never heard of CAWPILE before, but looked it up. I may have to give it a try. I agree that ratings are so subjective to the individual. I hope your new laptop works well for you. I finally broke down a couple years ago and got a new one after 9 years. I am very happy with mine.

Your current and upcoming reads all look so good! I am looking forward to reading Go Hex Yourself and hope you enjoy it when you read it.

    Have a great week!

  10. Like me, you had an "exciting" medical outing.

Getting a new laptop does result in lots of work transferring everything. I got mine in 2018, so I will hang in there for a while longer.

    Enjoy your week.

  11. I would consider my laptop to be at about mid life now! It's still new enough that I remember how awful my old one was but it getting old enough that sometimes I find myself looking at new ones. Have a great week!

  12. Good luck with the 2008 books being deal with by the end of the year! I started using CAWPILE this year as well, I'm interested to see what the stats are going to be! And yeah for the new computer! I keep all my files copied onto an external hard drive, just so it's easier when I do get a new computer, because everything's on there, I just have to transfer it over :) And once the files are on the new computer, then it's just a matter of opening iTunes in the way that lets you pick your library, so play counts and such continue! Thanks for stopping by! Happy reading!
