Audiobook Review: A Story to Kill by Lynn Cahoon

A Story to Kill

Author:
Lynn Cahoon
Narrator: C. S. E. Cooney
Series: Cat Latimer Mystery (Book 1)
Publication: Tantor Audio (August 30, 2016)
Length: 7 hours and 30 minutes

Description: Former English professor Cat Latimer is back in Colorado, hosting writers' retreats in the big blue Victorian she's inherited, much to her surprise, from none other than her carousing ex-husband. Now it's an authors' getaway, but Cat won't let anyone get away with murder.

The bed-and-breakfast is open for business, and best-selling author Tom Cook is among its first guests. Cat doesn't know why he came all the way from New York, but she's glad to have him among the quirkier - and far less famous - attendees.

Cat's high school sweetheart, Seth, who's fixing up the weathered home, brings on mixed emotions for Cat, some of them a little overpowering. But it's her uncle, the local police chief, whom she'll call for help when there's a surprise ending for Tom Cook in his cozy guest room. Will a killer have the last word on the new life Cat has barely begun?

My Thoughts: Cat Latimer has inherited a house from her ex-husband which brings her back home to Colorado. She's a former English professor turned author. She has decided to open up the house as a place to hold seminars and writing retreats.

Her first retreat is fully booked and even has a best-selling author on the roll. However, when the author is found murdered in his room, Cat fears that her dreams of hosting writing retreats and supplementing her income from writing have just gone up in smoke.

Cat has to find out who murdered Tom Cook if she wants her new business to survive. Luckily, she has the help of former boyfriend turned handyman Seth and her uncle Pete who is the local chief of police. Though she has mixed feelings about Seth. He seems to want to rekindle their high school romance, but she's torn between old feelings for him and feelings about her deceased husband.

Besides, she has a murder to solve and plenty of suspects including some of the other quirky attendees at the writing retreat, the author's grieving widow, and old college rival turned head of the college English Department Larry Vargas.

And along the way she discovers that the death of her ex-husband Michael may not have been the heart attack that was the listed cause of death.

This was a nice start to a new cozy mystery series. Cat and her friend and business partner Shauna are both interesting characters. I liked the setting. I liked the potential relationship with Seth and the cliffhanger ending about her ex.

I bought this one July 8, 2021. You can buy your copy here.
