Review: Queen of Shadows by Dianne Sylvan

Queen of Shadows
Author: Dianne Sylvan
Publication: Ace (August 31, 2010)

Description: Meet Miranda Grey-music and magic are in her blood.

Overwhelmed by her uncanny ability to manipulate people's emotions through her music, Miranda Grey comes to the attention of vampire lord David Solomon. Believing he can help bring her magic under control, David discovers that Miranda's powers may affect the vampire world too...

My Thoughts: This was a great urban fantasy. Miranda Grey doesn't know it but she is an empath. All she knows is that she is going crazy from the emotions that she can't keep out of her head. One day on her way home from a performance, she is dragged into an alley and raped by four men. She finally lets go of her rage and kills them with her mind. She is discovered by David Solomon who is the Prime vampires of the Southern region and taken to his home.

He provides medical attention and helps her learn to build shields to keep other emotions out. David is also very involved in keeping his territory safe. He is under threat from the Blackthorns - a cult that he thought was destroyed in California.

David and Miranda fall in love but David's friend had a prophecy that keeping Miranda near him would mean her death. After he helps her develop shields, he sends her away. Neither one can forget the other though they both try to go on with their lives.

David is a wonderful hero. He is powerful and scary but also tender and kind to Miranda. Miranda gradually recovers her self and her strengths once she learns to block out the emotions of others. She gets to be one kick ass heroine and totally worthy of being David's Queen.

I can't wait for the sequel. This one was filled with emotion and excitement and kept me on the edge of my chair. I highlighted so many wonderful passages on my Kindle. Their are some great turns of phrase like "She got the look of someone trying to find words to explain calculus to a hamster." I couldn't put it down.

She felt like a thin candy shell, run through with cracks and ready to splinter at any second.
Now I'm looking forward to Shadowflame which will be published July 26, 2011.

  1. It's strange but I don't remember ever hearing of this book but it sounds good. It's been a while since I read a vampire book that I enjoyed so I'll have to give this one a try.
