Review: Blood Oath by Christopher Farnsworth

Blood Oath
Author: Christopher Farnsworth
Publication: Putnam Adult; 1 edition (May 18, 2010)

Description: The ultimate secret. The ultimate agent. The President's vampire.

Zach Barrows is an ambitious young White House staffer whose career takes an unexpected turn when he's partnered with Nathaniel Cade, a secret agent sworn to protect the president. But Cade is no ordinary civil servant. Bound by a special blood oath, Cade has spent more than 140 years in service to the president, battling nightmares before they can break into the daylight world of the American dream.

Immediately Zach and Cade receive their first joint assignment: one that uncovers a shadowy government conspiracy and a plot to attack the Unites States with a gruesome new biological weapon. Zach soon learns that the world is far stranger, and far more dangerous, than he ever imagined . . . and that his partner is the least of his problems.

My Thoughts: This was a great thriller that reminded me a lot of Tom Clancy's work. Zach reminds me of a young Jack Ryan. Of course, it also had vampires and other weird mythological creatures. It even had a mad scientist.

The story begins when Zach is assigned as the handler for Nathaniel Cade, the president's vampire. Zach is an ambitious politician who has climbed his way to a job with the President. He doesn't want to work with Cade and thinks it is a punishment. He is dropped head first into his first case. Someone is importing body parts into the US to create monsters like Frankenstein's monster. The description of the monsters is scary and gross.

Cade is an interesting vampire. He is held to defend the President and the United States by a blood oath that he took shortly after he became a vampire in 1867. He is consumed by guilt over the fact that he killed his best friend and crewmates when he was turned and has sworn off human blood. He even attends AA meetings. We do learn a lot about Cade in the story. While he says he thinks of humans as cattle, we see that he has a friendship with his previous handler who has been with him for years but is now dying from an inoperable cancer. We also see a tentative new friendship growing with Zach.

The adventure is nonstop. I recommend this book to people who love political thrillers and who want to read about an interesting vampire.
