Name a book or author that you truly wanted to love but left you disappointed. (And, of course, explain why.)
I hate to say it but Before I Fall by Lauren Kate was this for me. I had read such great reviews. I pre-ordered it and was really excited when it arrived. But then I started to read it and just couldn't get into the story. The mean-spirited main character and the fact that the book was told in a first person, stream of consciousness style just defeated me. I read a few pages and set it aside. Then I read some more glowing reviews and tried again. I finally abandoned the book at about page 185. Here is my review.

The main character is very mean spirited, but I recommend finishing the book. The characters growth and what she learns and accepts about life is the true amazingness of this novel. The story is an eye opener about how people treat others and I really sat down and thought about how I treated others after finishing it.
ReplyDeleteGreat post idea. I haven't read Before I Fall, but I've also heard great reviews. I tend to disagree with things that get great reviews relatively often, though. Maybe I am just picky. ;)
ReplyDeleteI can't say I really wanted to love it, but I am just not a fan of Twilight. The writing does not do it for me. I can take or leave vampires, so it's not the subject matter, it's just the writing itself, not my cup o tea...
While I liked Before I Fall and I understand why the author ended it that way, I really disagreed with it.
ReplyDeleteWolf Hall was for me a major let down.
