ARC Review: Catch Her Death by Melinda Leigh

Catch Her Death

Author:
Melinda Leigh
Series: Bree Taggert (Book 7)
Publication: Montlake (September 12, 2023)

Description: Sheriff Bree Taggert and those she loves become the target of a family’s deadly revenge in a chilling novel of suspense by #1 Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh.

After Sheriff Bree Taggert’s takedown of cold-blooded murderer Travis Ekin, his family vows revenge. Travis’s mother and brothers are every bit as violent, and Bree is in their crosshairs.

To complicate matters, Bree’s best friend, Dana Romano, walks into her date’s home and finds him shot in the chest. Dana tangles with an unidentified intruder, but he escapes through the back door. The crime scene is in another police department’s jurisdiction, and the lead investigator focuses on Dana as the prime suspect.

While Bree and investigator Matt Flynn work off the books to clear Dana, Bree’s family receives deadly threats. A second dead body and a shocking piece of evidence link the two cases. Bree and Matt must find the killer fast—before either case takes another deadly turn.

My Thoughts: In the seventh Bree Taggert mystery the story makes a shift toward her former partner, now housemate Dana Romano who walks into her boyfriend's house for a date, is attacked, and winds up doing CPR on her boyfriend who has been shot in the chest. He dies on the operating table.

Left with a concussion, Dana isn't ready for the local cops to think that she is not a victim but the killer. Bree knows her friend and doesn't believe she killed him, but the local cops can't find any other suspect for the generally liked plastic surgeon.

Meanwhile, Bree is dealing with the usual aspects of her job which includes threatening emails, threatening packages, and a message painted on the back of her barn which is also a threat. She thinks they come from the local drug-dealing family who threatened her when one of the brothers was arrested for murder.

Other day to day jobs include finding a local man with dementia when he wanders away from home a couple of times. Bree knows he wants to communicate something to her but his disease makes it impossible.

I enjoy this series. I like the way Bree has changed from a loner to the parent of her orphaned niece and nephew and the way she has developed a relationship with Matt Flynn. Her support circle and Dana's has grown a lot since the early books in this series.

Favorite Quote:
Bree exited the house and strode toward him, jamming a pair of sunglasses on her face. "From inside the house, it looked like it was going to be warmer out here. Why is the sky bluest in winter?"

"I assume the answer is science science something science."
I received this one in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley. You can buy your copy here.
