Book Beginnings on Friday is now hosted by Rose City Reader. The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice. Check out the links above for the rules and for the posts of the participants each week. Don’t dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.
Beginning:
The mutineers would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for the collapse of the Flow.Friday 56:
"I understand your concern, sir, and that is why the House of Lagos is willing to assist you."This week I am reading The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi. This book is from my TBR mountain. Here is the description from Amazon:
The duke squinted at Kiva. "What do you mean?"
The first novel of a new space-opera sequence set in an all-new universe by the Hugo Award-winning, New York Times-bestselling author of Redshirts and Old Man's War
Our universe is ruled by physics. Faster than light travel is impossible―until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field available at certain points in space-time, which can take us to other planets around other stars.
Riding The Flow, humanity spreads to innumerable other worlds. Earth is forgotten. A new empire arises, the Interdependency, based on the doctrine that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It’s a hedge against interstellar war―and, for the empire’s rulers, a system of control.
The Flow is eternal―but it’s not static. Just as a river changes course, The Flow changes as well. In rare cases, entire worlds have been cut off from the rest of humanity. When it’s discovered that the entire Flow is moving, possibly separating all human worlds from one another forever, three individuals―a scientist, a starship captain, and the emperox of the Interdependency―must race against time to discover what, if anything, can be salvaged from an interstellar empire on the brink of collapse.
HI Kathy!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I haven't read any Sci-Fi in ages. I do have a couple to read... this weekend seems like a good time to start!

Hi Kathy. I haven't rad Sci-Fi in such a long time. There's something about it that I enjoy watching more than reading. I was watching Logan's Run last night. Classic. Thanks for visiting my blog. I hope your readers will as well! http://tinyurl.com/LisaKsBookReviewsCF-DotKM
ReplyDeleteI don't read a whole lot of Sci-Fi, but that opening line really has me intrigued! Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteI've seen this book before, but I've never read from this author. Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteHappy Reading, Kathy!
ReplyDeleteSpace operas are so intriguing. I have yet to try one and I really should. I hope that you love this one! :)
ReplyDeleteSpace operas is definitely a genre I should pick up more. Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteThat is serious science fiction. Hope you enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy,
ReplyDeleteFantasy and Sci-Fi are the two genres which I never really read, they are more hubbie's domain, although he generally prfers his reading to be more fact than fiction!
I am interested and intrigued by the notion of 'The Flow' though, and I could quite see that this, or a very close drivitive, might well be a concept for the future of humanity and the Earth' survival as a planet!
Thanks for sharing :)

I am excited about this one! I hope you enjoy it. I have only read (more like listened to) one of Scalzi's novels before and just loved it. Thanks for sharing, Kathy!
ReplyDeleteScalzi is one of those authors I've been aware of for ages but somehow never read. I'm not a big science fiction reader but I do really like the sound of this one. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI loved Lock in by Scalzi, I need to try more of his stuff! :)
