Review: Wicked Appetite by Janet Evanovich

Wicked Appetite
Author: Janet Evanovich
Publication: St. Martin's Press; First Edition edition (September 14, 2010)

Description: Life in Marblehead has had a pleasant predictability, until Diesel arrives. Rumor has it that a collection of priceless ancient relics representing the Seven Deadly Sins have made their way to Boston’s North Shore. Partnered with pastry chef Lizzie Tucker, Diesel bullies and charms his way through historic Salem to track them down—and his criminal mastermind cousin Gerewulf Grimorie. The black-haired, black-hearted Wulf is on the hunt for the relic representing gluttony. Caught in a race against time, Diesel and Lizzie soon find out that more isn’t always better, as they battle Wulf and the first of the deadly sins.

My Thoughts: What a fun story! Lizzie is settled in Marblehead making marvelous cupcakes. She is also trying to get a cookbook published so that she can make repairs on the historic house she inherited from a great-aunt. She didn't know that she was one of two Unmentionables in the world who can locate the dreaded SALIGIA stones until Diesel comes to stay.

Diesel is on the track of the stones for BUM. His rival is his cousin Wulf who looks remarkably like a vampire. Diesel has unusual powers too. There isn't a lock that can keep him out. The stone they are searching for in gluttony.

The book is funny in that crazy way that Evanovich does so well. The characters say the most outrageous things as if they were normal. The cast of characters includes Glo the goth counter girl who buys a spell book and is determined to learn how to cast spells. Unfortunately, they all go wrong.

Wulf's henchman is the other Unmentionable who can sense the stones. He is also crazy and currently fixated on the Middle Ages. He dresses and talks like he was from medieval times.

Even the animal characters are unique. Glo gives Lizzie a cat with one glass eye and a short tail. It might have been Lizzie's great-aunt's cat. It is a good protector. Glo also gives Lizzie a monkey named Carl. Both animal characters add a lot of zaniness to the story.

I recommend this one to those who love Evanovich's Stephanie Plum stories. The book was filled with over-the-top humor and very entertaining dialog.

This is how it happens, I thought. A series of unexpected events and wham, nothing will ever be the same again. Yesterday, everything was comfortable and going along as planned, and now I've got two scary men and a cat in my life. The cat I was pretty sure I could manage. The men had me worried.
