Review: Gentlemen Prefer Succubi by Jill Myles

Now I know what my first book of the new year will be..

I just saw this trailer again and it made my decision for me.

I will be reading Gentlemen Prefer Succubi by Jill Myles on my Kindle. (Let's see, it fits the RYOB Challenge and the 2010 E Books Challenge. That's a start.)

Here is what Amazon.com says: Who Knew An Angel Could Get A Girl In So Much Devilish Trouble?

Jackie Brighton woke up in a Dumpster this morning, and her day has only gotten weirder. Her familiar B-cups have somehow become double Ds, her sex drive is insatiable, and apparently she had her fi rst one-night stand ever...with a fallen angel. All she remembers is gorgeous Noah's oddly hypnotic blue eyes...and then a dark stranger whose bite transformed her into an immortal siren with a sexy Itch. With help from Noah, Jackie begins to adapt to her new lifestyle -- until she accidentally sends Noah into the deadly clutches of the vampire queen and lands herself in a fi erce battle for an ancient halo with the queen's wickedly hot righthand man. Who just happens to be the vampire who originally bit her. How's a girl supposed to save the world when the enemy's so hard to resist?

This sounds like a fun way to read in the new year.

Reading Into the New Year

This challenge is completed and I won a prize. I am so excited and eager to get another book to read. The book I chose will fit into my Middle Grade Reading Challenge.

I will be participating in this challenge to see out the old year and welcome in the new year. I don't have a book planned. I'll just see what strikes my fancy from my TBR stack.

Here is the information about the Readathon from Kristen's blog Bookworming in the 21st Century.

Now, what is the Read-a-thon all about? Promoting reading in the new year - 2010!

Starts: 5 pm on Thursday, December 31st
Ends: 10 pm on Sunday, January 3rd

You can read as little or as much as you want! Also, I'm planning on having a smaller event called Reading Into the New Year - where us bookworms can read as it turns midnight! I will be posting the sign up for that event next. Please partake in either or both!!!

So, to start off. My goal is to read at least 24 hours. I'm going to see what books I get through closer to the date and then post about the pile of books I want to get through. As you're thinking about what books you want to read, consider the following:

  • Shorter books are easier to push through and you may want to include a few of those

  • You don't have to read a crazy amount of hours - whatever you can fit in!

  • This is a no stress readathon, so if you don't meet your goal - no big.

  • Think about any new challenges your starting and what books are on those lists.

I am not going to even guess how many hours I'll be reading. I usually don't keep track of the time I read. I will be keeping track of the number of books and number of pages that I read. I know that January 2 will be a day spent traveling from my vacation home to my home with stops along the way. I'm not sure how much reading I'll be able to fit in. Too bad I don't have an audio book for the car ride.

January 1 will also be the first day of the six challenges I am participating in this year. Probably some of what I read will fit in to one or more of them.

Here's what I read:

1. Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs by Molly Harper

2. Gentlemen Prefer Succubi by Jill Myles

That's it. I probably spent about 7 hours reading these two books.

I have spent all day today reading blogs (and adding to my TBR list) instead of reading books I already have. Bad, Kathy!

Best Books I Read This Year (Adult)

Holiday Break Reading Challenge #14

This challenge is like asking a mother to say who her favorite child is. As of this morning I have read 225 books in 2009. I can't limit myself to just nine books. I'm not sure I can limit myself to nine authors. But here are my memorable reads of 2009.

Many of my favorite authors came out with one (or more) books this year.
  1. Jayne Ann Krentz added wonderful new books written as herself, Jayne Castle and Amanda Quick this year.
  2. Nora Roberts and Suzanne Brockmann each had two books that I really enjoyed. And Nora, writing as J. D. Robb, added more excellent adventures in the Eve Dallas series.
  3. Lois McMaster Bujold completed her Sharing Knife Quartet with still another excellent book. I reread all four of them this year.
  4. Jim Butcher added to his Harry Dresden series and completed his Codex Alera series with excellent books.
  5. Kelley Armstrong made additions to her Women of the Otherworld series and her series about Nadia Stafford, Hit Woman.
  6. Mustn't forget Rachel Vincent, Patricia Briggs, Nalini Singh and Jacqueline Carey. They all added memorable books to my bookshelves this year.
These are the books by "new to me" authors that I really liked this year.

Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews
Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase
Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost
Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo
Wicked Game by Jeri Smith-Ready

I'm sure that I am forgetting more than one author or book that brought me pleasure this year. It was a good year for books.

Holiday Break Reading Challenge Update

Here is a list of what I have read since the Holiday Break Reading Challenge began on Dec. 18.

My first goal was to catch up with newly published books in series that I follow. I began with Divine Misdemeanors by Laurell K. Hamilton. This is the eighth in the Merry Gentry series and was a good read for fans of the series. Then I read First Lord's Fury by Jim Butcher. This is the sixth in that series and was filled with battles as the war with the Vord Queen comes to a head.

Then Christmas Eve came and I was looking for something lighter. I had brought Let It Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle with me and it proved to be the light and fluffy romance that I was looking for. It was a very good Christmas story or, rather, three interconnected stories. Very young adult and very nice. This was also the first time that I have read anything by any of these young adult authors. I now have to go and read other things that they have written. Suite Scarlett by Maureen Johnson was free for the Kindle and I downloaded it. I know I have John Green's books in my HS Media Center. I'm not sure about Lauren Myracle but when I get back to school I'll check.

Christmas Day I fired up the Kindle (so to speak) and read some adult books. I read Alpha Turned by K B Alan which is the story of a young woman taken home by a college boyfriend and forcibly turned into a werewolf. She eventually finds her place and love when she meets an honorable werewolf. Kiss and Kin by Kinsey Holley and Serengeti Heat by Vivi Andrews were also shape-shifter erotic romances. They were all good reads if you are looking for erotic romance. Alpha Turned was free for the Kindle and the other two were $2.80 each. As far as I know, none of them are available as print books.

Then, still in a paranormal mood, I picked up Immortal: Love Stories with Bite which was edited by P. C. Cast and included a number of stories by Young Adult authors of paranormal books. I chose this book to read the stories by authors I already read -- Richelle Mead, Rachel Caine, and Rachel Vincent -- but all of the stories were good and I may have to add a few more authors to my reading list.

After finishing that book of short stories, I chose another. I chose Changing the World: All-New Tales of Valdemar. The book quickly brought me back to the world of Heralds and Companions. I liked the Valdemar books written by Mercedes Lackey and like going back to it with the various short story anthologies that have been printed.

Staying in the short story mode, I chose to read The Queen in Winter next. This book is essentially composed of four novellas. I chose it for the novella by Sharon Shinn which revisits her Twelve Houses universe. I read the story by Lynn Kurland too. I lost interest before finishing the book but I did read the first two stories.

Next, I chose Shadowlight by Lynn Viehl. This is her first book in the Kyndred series. It is a spin-off from her Darkyn books. The Kyndred are children who were created by the Brethren to battle the Darkyn but were abandoned, adopted, and raised in ignorance of their abilities. The story talks about how the Kyndred are trying to find each other and learn about themselves and the other Kyndred while keeping themselves secret from the greater society for fear that they would be used again because of their powers. This was a good introduction. I'll be looking for the next installment in May.

That brings me to today. Next on the list is another short paranormal -- Eternal Desire -- by Roxanne Rhoads. I follow her blog and thought I would give her book a try.

Holiday Break Reading Challenge #12

I so don't do animal books (and talking animals are twice as bad). Any animals I read about are fantastical like werewolves or Companions (Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books).

But I did read one animal book as a child that has stayed with me for life. Somehow it is indelibly imprinted on my mind. I read Black Beauty. I remember crying so hard that my mother threatened to take the book away from me before I finished it. Maybe the memory of sobbing through a book is what has turned me off animal books to this day.

Product description from Amazon: "A horse is a horse of course unless of course the horse is Black Beauty. Animal-loving children have been devoted to Black Beauty throughout this century, and no doubt will continue through the next. Although Anna Sewell's classic paints a clear picture of turn-of-the-century London, its message is universal and timeless: animals will serve humans well if they are treated with consideration and kindness.

Black Beauty tells the story of the horse's own long and varied life, from a well-born colt in a pleasant meadow to an elegant carriage horse for a gentleman to a painfully overworked cab horse. Throughout, Sewell rails--in a gentle, 19th-century way--against animal maltreatment. Young readers will follow Black Beauty's fortunes, good and bad, with gentle masters as well as cruel. Children can easily make the leap from horse-human relationships to human-human relationships, and begin to understand how their own consideration of others may be a benefit to all. (Ages 9 to 12)"

This a is picture of a current edition of Black Beauty. I think mine was an old Whitman Classics version. In fact, it might still be here around the house if I would just go looking. (Now that I'm thinkiing about it there was also an old Spin and Marty book about a rich boy going to a dude ranch and learning all about horses and other critters that I read at about the same time period. That might be here too.) I'm spending Christmas Break in the house my parents built and brought me to as a 6-month-old baby.

Anticipation, Sweet Anticipation

I was just checking at Amazon to see what I have ordered but not yet received. I have lots coming in the near future.

Tomorrow will be a good day on my Kindle. I should be getting:

Deadtown by Nancy Holzner
Nice Girls Don't Live Forever by Molly Harper
Gentlemen Prefer Succubi by Jill Myles

These should be waiting for me when I get back to work on January 4:

Magic Under Glass by Jackie Dolomore
Ex-Mas by Kate Brian
Once a Princess and Twice a Princess by Sherwood Smith
Fired-Up by Jayne Ann Krentz
Street Game by Christine Feehan
The Dark Divine by Bree Despain

On January 4, Death's Mistress by Karen Chance will download to my Kindle too.

January 7 my mailbox should be overflowing as I expect these to arrive:

Firespell by Chloe Neill
Inked by Karen Chance et al.
Bone Magic by Yasmine Galenorn
Kitty's House of Horrors by Carrie Vaughn
My Soul to Save by Rachel Vincent
Captivate by Carrie Jones
Ranger's Apprentice: Erak's Ransom by John Flanagan

My hardest decision will be deciding which one of these beauties I should start with. (She rubs her hands gleefully!)

The 2010 Young Adult Reading Challenge

This challenge is hosted by J. Kaye's Book Blog. It is a challenge that a large number of people participate in. I was #219 when I signed up on Dec. 28.

Here are the rules:

New Reading Challenge: The 2010 Young Adult Reading Challenge

1. Anyone can join. You don't need a blog to participate.
2. There are four levels:
  • The Mini YA Reading Challenge – Read 12 Young Adult novels.
  • Just My Size YA Reading Challenge – Read 25 Young Adult novels.
  • Stepping It Up YA Reading Challenge – Read 50 Young Adult novels.
  • Super Size Me YA Reading Challenge – Read 75 Young Adult novels.
3. Audio, eBooks, re-reads all count.
4. No need to list your books in advance. You may select books as you go. Even if you list them now, you can change the list if needed.
5. Challenge begins January 1st thru December, 2010.
6. When you sign up under Mr. Linky, put the direct link to your post where your Young Adult novels will be listed. Include the URL so that other viewers can find this fun challenge. If you’d prefer to put your list in the sidebar of your blog, please leave your viewers the link to the sign up page. Again, so viewers can join the challenge too.

I haven't decided what level I will participate at yet. I know that I read a lot of YA books throughout the year and would guess that somewhere between 25 and 50 is where I will end up.

May Addendum: Having already met my first goal, I'm upping myself to the next level. Now I'll be trying for "Stepping It Up"

Holiday Break Reading Challenge Activity 11: 2010 Challenges

I am either getting carried away on this blogging thing or losing my mind. I am planning to take part in 6 reading challenges in 2010.

Here they are:

The 2010 Young Adult Reading Challenge hosted at J. Kaye's Book Blog. I chose this one because as a Media Specialist in a High School I need to know about Young Adult books (and I like them too.)

The next three are very closely related. I think that I can count the same books for all three of them. They all deal with getting books off of my massive TBR pile.

The Bottoms Up 2010 Reading Challenge is hosted by Ellz Readz.

2010 TBR Challenge hosted by MizB's and RYOB (Read Your Own Books) also hosted by MizB's

The next challange also will help my TBR pile but this one is the pile on my Kindle. Royal Reviews is hosting the 2010 E Book Challenge.

And, last but not least and to remember that I like to re-read books, I am participating in the Flashback Challenge at Booklust.

I have created separate posts for each of these challenges and will be keeping track of what I read for each challenge by editing the posts I think.

These ought to keep me busy in 2010.

RYOB Challenge 2010

I have decided to participate in another challenge for 2010. I will be doing the RYOB (Read Your Own Books) Challenge which is hosted by MizB

Here are the rules:

For 2010, I am planning to continue with the RYOB (Read Your Own Books) challenge! The rules are simple:
  • Pick a number of books you’d like to read in one year (about 100 for me)
  • Choose those books from your OWN collection
  • Read them between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010
And, that’s it!

Some other guidelines for this challenge:

  • Re-Reads are NOT allowed (the challenge is to get more of your own books read that have been sitting there waiting!)
  • Audiobooks & e-books ARE allowed
  • You do NOT need a blog to participate — you can leave comments on this post with your progress

Click on the name after Jan. 1, 2010 to go to the page for Mr. Linky. I have also put a button for the challenge in my sidebar.

This challenge dovetails nicely with my TBR Challenge (also hosted by MizB) and the 2010 E Book Challenge (hosted by Royal Reviews). I will be updating this post with the titles of the books I read for this challenge.
