ARC Review: Outsider by Linda Castillo

Outsider
Author: Linda Castillo
Series: Kate Burkholder Book 12
Publication: Minotaur Books (July 7, 2020)

Description: Linda Castillo follows her instant New York Times bestseller, Shamed, with Outsider, an electrifying thriller about a woman on the run hiding among the Amish.

While enjoying a sleigh ride with his children, Amish widower Adam Lengacher discovers a car stuck in a snowdrift and an unconscious woman inside. He calls upon Chief of Police Kate Burkholder for help, and she is surprised to recognize the driver: fellow cop and her former friend, Gina Colorosa.

Years before, Kate and Gina were best friends at the police academy and patrol officers in Columbus, but time and distance have taken them down two very different paths. Now, Gina reveals a shocking story of betrayal and revenge that has forced her to run for her life. She’s desperate for protection, and the only person she can trust is Kate—but can Kate trust her? Or will Gina’s dark past put them all in danger?

As a blizzard bears down on Painters Mill, Kate helps Gina go into hiding on Adam’s farm. While the tough-skinned Gina struggles to adjust to the Amish lifestyle, Kate and state agent John Tomasetti delve into the incident that caused Gina to flee. But as Kate gets closer to the truth, a killer lies in wait. When violence strikes, she must confront a devastating truth that changes everything she thought she knew not only about friendship, but the institution to which she's devoted her life.

My Thoughts: This is the twelfth Kate Burkholder mystery and this time an old friend with a big problem comes to visit.

Gina Colorosa is on the run from a bunch of her police colleagues who are into all sorts of illegal activities. Gina isn't so clean herself. When she has to run, with a bullet in her shoulder, she finds her way to Amish country where Kate is the Sheriff.

A car accident puts her in the way of Adam Lengacher who was a childhood friend of Kate's. Now he is a widower with three young children. With a blizzard on the way and no way to get Gina somewhere where she won't endanger the Lengachers, Kate is forced to hear her story and decide what she can do to help her.

The problem is that, while they were good friends from the time they met and all through their time at the police academy, their paths took radically different turns once they were on the job. Gina was always an adrenaline junkie and had a more flexible set of morals than Kate had. That caused a break in their friendship that was never healed.

Kate calls in her boyfriend John Tomasetti who works with the BCI to try to find out the true story since neither she nor John think that Gina is telling everything she knows. Meanwhile, two of Gina's fellow officers want to find her and kill her before she can get her version of the facts out in public.

This was a fast-paced and action-packed thriller. Fans of the genre and fans of the Kate Burkholder series won't want to miss this one.

Favorite Quote:
He starts to open the door, but I stop him. "Joe, you know you can't talk to anyone about this, right?"

"I talk to my cats, mostly. I've got five of them, you know. Feral, or so they think. Unlike most of my human friends, they never repeat a word."

I grin, liking him. "Thank you."

"I hope your friend finds peace."

"Me, too."

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (June 29, 2020)

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.  It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

I will be combining my YA and adult reading and purchases on this one weekly roundup.

Other Than Reading...

This was another beautiful week but with unfulfilled promises for rain. I spent a lot of time reading and listening to audiobooks. I did have to get up early one day to ferry my brother to his car dealership so that his "baby" could be worked on. That was Thursday and it is still there waiting for a part. Luckily, he still has his old Subaru Outback to drive even though he usually only uses it in the winter and when he is hauling more than his Honda Prelude can handle.

Thursday was the anniversary of our solar system. We have had it for one year now. We also got a power bill this week that built up our credit more. Bill really likes getting those power bills since they are part of the house expenses that he pays. This is four months in a row with no power bill to pay.

Next week I should begin the process to renew my driver's license. It expires on my August 2 birthday and, since I want the enhanced license which will let me enter Canada while driving and also board an airplane, this could take a while. Hopefully, I have all the documentation to do this in one trip though I've heard horror stories about people having to make multiple trips before they have all the correct documentation. My brother went through this a couple of weeks ago when the DMV reopened. It was closed when he had his April birthday.

State of the Stack #97 (June 28, 2020)

This is my monthly State of the Stack post. It is my way to keep track of my review books and to hopefully reduce the stack that I have waiting for me. I take a look at my review commitments on or near the first of the month.

Here is my Review Books Spreadsheet I list them in publication order and sort them by month. I can quickly see how many books I have for each date. Ideally, this keeps me from over-committing to review books. Check my spreadsheet to find out where I got each book.

I also do this post because sometimes (frequently) review books sit on my stack for a while before I read and review them. I try to read and review books within two weeks of publication date. Sometimes I can't, though, if too many books are releasing on the same date or if the book arrives too near its publication date and my calendar is already full.

I am very grateful to the authors and publishers who support my reading habit.

Book Review: Alpha Night by Nalini Singh

    Alpha Night
    Author: Nalini Singh
    Series: Psy-Changeling Trinity Book 4
    Publication: Berkley (June 9, 2020)

Description: New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh returns to her breathtaking Psy-Changeling Trinity series with a mating that shouldn’t exist…

Alpha wolf Selenka Durev’s devotion to her pack is equaled only by her anger at anyone who would harm those under her care. That currently includes the empaths who’ve flowed into her city for a symposium that is a security nightmare, a powder keg just waiting for a match.

Ethan Night is an Arrow who isn’t an Arrow. Numb and disengaged from the world, he’s loyal only to himself. Assigned as part of the security force at a world-first symposium, he carries a dark agenda tied to the power-hungry and murderous Consortium. Then violence erupts and Ethan finds himself crashing into the heart and soul of an alpha wolf.

Mating at first sight is a myth, a fairytale. Yet Selenka’s wolf is resolute: Ethan Night, broken Arrow and a man capable of obsessive devotion, is the mate it has chosen. Even if the mating bond is full of static and not quite as it should be. Because Selenka’s new mate has a terrible secret, his mind surging with a power that is a creature of madness and death…

My Thoughts: The fourth book in the Psy-Changeling Trinity series stars Alph wolf Selenka Durev and Arrow Ethan Night. They meet at a security conference and one look engages the mating bond.

Ethan considers himself damaged because he was under the control of Councilor Ming LeBon who trained him and used him as a weapon until he was rescued by other Arrows. He also believes that he is soon to go mad because he seems to have the Scarab Syndrome with is killing Psys.

Selenka has her own troubles with her pack that are mostly caused by her father who was sure that he would be the next Alpha and who resents Selenka for being a better and stronger wolf. The whole Russian shifter population, but especially the wolves, are being bothered by a charismatic leader named Blaise who is wooing away wolves, Psys, and humans for his cult-like church. Blaise seems to have taken a special dislike for Selenka.

The PysNet is also taking hits since someone seems to be trying to destroy it. Psys depend on the PsyNet to maintain their sanity. So finding the villain is especially important to the Psy leaders. It seems that Ethan is almost the only one who can see some infestations in the PsyNet that are showing up around the new breeches and which lead to people who have the Scarab Syndrome and whose madness is triggering the breeches.

This was a powerful and engaging story about two people - Selenka and Ethan - who are trying to build a partnership while dealing with lots and lots of other issues. I loved the emotional intensity of their relationship.

Fans of the Psy-Changeling series won't want to miss this one.

    Favorite Quote:
Gut cold with anger all over again for how his view of himself had been twisted, Selenka ran her claws over his jaw. "Then show me your jagged edges and your fractured pieces, your obsession and your need. Show me you."
I bought this one for my Kindle and I bought the audiobook too. You can buy your copy here.

Friday Memes: Alpha Night by Nalini Singh

    Happy Friday everybody!
Book Beginnings on Friday is now hosted by Rose City ReaderThe Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice. Check out the links above for the rules and for the posts of the participants each week. Don’t dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.

    Beginning:
The year is 2083, and after one hundred years of an endless emotionless night, the Psy have emerged into a painful dawn. Love and elation, hate and envy, joy and anguish, sorrow and amusement, all this and more, the psychic race can now feel without fear of a brainwipe that leaves them hollow automatons.

Foreseers, telekinetics, empaths, telepaths, psychometrics, all are free to exist.

But one hundred years leaves a scar.
    Friday 56:
His attention sharpened. "Are you here to warm me off?" If so, she would fail. Ethan had chosen and he wasn't about to budge. Should Selenka decide against him, she could tear out his throat. That was the only way he's leave her before his time ran out.
This week I am spotlighting a new arrival on my TBR mountain. Alpha Night by Nalini Singh is the fourth book in the Psy-Changeling Trinity series. I have been reading this series and all the other books in the Psy-Changeling world since the first one in 2006. Here is the description of this one:

Book Review: Blood Shot: Stories from the Blood 'Verse by Tanya Huff

    Blood Shot
    Author: Tanya Huff
    Series: Blood Series
Publication: JABberwocky Literary Agency, Inc. (May 14, 2020)

Description: Tanya Huff’s darkly thrilling Blood novels introduced readers to vampiric P.I. Victoria Nelson and her life amongst the paranormal. Here are some of Tanya’s best short stories featuring Vicki and other unforgettable characters from her world…

In Quid Pro Quo, Vicki’s policeman lover, Mike, has been kidnapped by a man who wants her to turn him into a vampire. But she’s about to show him just how terrifying that can be…

In Songs Sung Red, Vicki finds herself contending with a seductive and savage siren in a case that may lead her into the middle of a murder being investigated by Mike…

Vicki tries to help a young woman being tormented by a malevolent jinn who is granting her wishes with some very deadly consequences in If Wishes Were

In No Matter Where You Go, Vicki finds herself in a lethal realm of nightmarish creatures when some reckless teens open a portal to another dimension—with no way of getting back…

Blood Wrapped follows young wizard Tony Foster and vampire author Henry Fitzroy as they search for a missing little girl—and try to figure out just how to deal with Vicki’s upcoming birthday….

Sniping sisters Ashley and Brianna Bane uncover some strange goings on at their school when the walls start speaking—and Bri decides to test her wizarding skills against this unknown foe in After School Specials

And in See Me, Tony investigates when an elderly man is found dead in an alley with no identification, leading to a seriously awkward situation involving a lady of the night who may have designs on Tony’s boyfriend…

Full of action, passion, heart, and humor, these short stories deliver all Tanya Huff’s fans have come to expect.

My Thoughts: It has been many years since I read the Blood books and met former cop turned vampire Vicki Nelson. It was nice to revisit and make a few stops in her world. I have also read the Smoke series too and enjoyed them. It was also nice to revisit Henry and Tony and the other characters.

There were four Vicki/Tony stories and three Tony stories. The stories were all action-packed and entertaining. I liked the variety of themes of the stories.

All of the stories were entertaining and all were previously published in a wide variety of anthologies. It is nice to have them all in one convenient location.

    Favorite Quote:
Never growing old had lost a little of its shine as she watched Mike's hair grey and the lines around his eyes deepen, but being stronger and faster, being able to deal with the human and not-quite-human things that haunted the nights of a big city seemed a fair trade for being helpless between sunrise and sunset.

Audiobook: Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs

    Iron Kissed
    Author: Patricia Briggs
    Narrator: Lorelei King
Publication: Penguin Audio (Nov. 1, 2009)
Length: 9 hours and 11 minutes

Description: “Expect to be spellbound”* by Patricia Briggs’s #1 New York Times bestselling series starring Mercy Thompson. Being a lowly “walker” in a world of vampires, werewolves, and fae once kept her safe. But Mercy’s bark—and bite—are not so harmless any more…

Though Mercy can shift her shape into that of a coyote, her loyalty never wavers. So when her former boss and mentor, Zee, asks for her help, she’s there for him. A series of murders has rocked a fae reservation, and Zee needs her unique gifts, namely her coyote sense of smell, to sniff out the killer.

But when Zee is accused of murdering the suspect Mercy outed, he’s left to rot behind bars by his own kind. Now it’s up to Mercy to clear his name, whether he wants her to or not.

Mercy’s loyalty is under pressure from other directions, too. Werewolves are not known for their patience, and if Mercy can’t decide between the two she cares for, Sam and Adam may make the choice for her...

My Thoughts: In this adventure, Mercy is called in by her friend and mentor Zee to use her superior sense of smell to find out who murdered some fae on the fae reservation. She does pinpoint a suspect - a human who is one of the guard for the reservation.

When Zee and Uncle Mike go to talk to him, and likely kill him, they find that someone got there first and murdered him. The police arrive suspiciously fast and Zee is arrested for murder. Since the fae want the whole thing to go away fast, it is up to Mercy to find out who really killed the guard and prove her friend Zee innocent.

But the fae are very powerful and very invested in keeping their real powers off the radar, so Mercy is in as much danger from the fae as she is from the real killer.

It turns out that the murders were cover for someone wanting the powerful fae artifacts that each of the victims controlled. Among them is a walking stick whose original purpose was to make a farmer's ewes have two healthy lambs at each birthing. But old fae artifacts can do more than that, and this one has decided that Mercy needs it. It keeps showing up no matter how often Mercy tries to give it back.

This is also the story where Mercy needs to decide between Samuel and Adam before the two powerful alphas take away her choice. Samuel is her first love and her first heartbreak and she knows he needs her. But Adam is the man she loves - if only she wasn't terrified that loving him would put her under his control and change her in ways she doesn't want to be changed.

The story was compelling reading and parts of it were very hard to listen to because of the content. Mercy does manage to survive and I hope she is able to overcome the damage done to her. I recommend it and recommend this series to fans of good urban fantasy.

I bought this one. You can buy your copy here.

ARC Review: The Finders by Jeffrey B. Burton

    The Finders
    Author: Jeffrey B. Burton
Series: Mace Reid K-9 Mystery (Book 1)
Publication: Minotaur Books (June 30, 2020)

Description: Jeffrey B. Burton's The Finders marks the beginning of a fast-paced new mystery series featuring a heroic golden retriever cadaver dog named Vira and her handler, Mason Reid.

Mason "Mace" Reid lives on the outskirts of Chicago and specializes in human remains detection. He trains dogs to hunt for the dead. Reid’s coming off a taxing year―mourning the death of a beloved springer spaniel as well as the dissolution of his marriage. He adopts a rescue dog with a mysterious past―a golden retriever named Vira. And when Reid begins training Vira as a cadaver dog, he comes to realize just how special the newest addition to his family truly is…

Suddenly, Reid and his prize pupil find themselves hurled into a taxing murder case, which will push them to their very limits. Paired with determined Chicago Police Officer Kippy Gimm, Mace must put all his trust in Vira's abilities to thwart a serial killer who has now set his sights on Mace himself.

My Thoughts: Mace Reid trains dogs. He especially trains Human Remains Detection dogs. He has recently gone through a divorce and lost his favorite dog to kidney disease. But now his friend Paul has introduced him to a new puppy, one who survived carbon monoxide poisoning.

Mace names the dog Elvira. All his dogs are named for something relating to Country Music. Vira seems to be a canine genius as she quickly picks up both ordinary commands and the special things she needs to know to find human remains.

Vira first hunt has to do with finding the body of a victim of the Velvet Choker Killer who kidnaps, abuses and then kills young women. Vira is quick to find the body. But she is also quick to attack one of the spectators at the crime scene.

Fearing that his dog will be killed, Mace decides to look into the "innocent victim" and discovers that he had another young woman held captive in his house and evidence that he was the Velvet Choker Killer.

That should be the end of things. Except Mace seems to have attracted someone who wants him dead. Maybe the Velvet Choker Killer had a partner. Mace investigates along with Officer Kippy Gimm who is the one who rescued Vira from the carbon monoxide filled garage.

I enjoyed this mystery both for the plot and for the main character's love of dogs. Fans of mysteries with animals will enjoy this one.

    Other Than Reading...

We had a lovely week here in the Northland - lots of great weather with sunny skies and really pleasant temperatures. Of course, Duluth is also desperately short of rainfall for the year. I think we are five inches below average. But I like sunny skies and warm temperatures.

I am working away at my July review books and have just two more July 7 releases to read and then a gap before my next review books. I've not decided what I'll read yet. I have some possibilities on my TBR stack but haven't settled on anything yet. In audiobooks. I have just two more in the Mercy Thompson series and then I think I'll listen to the related series by Briggs - the Alpha and Omega books.

It is hard to believe that it is already past the middle of June. Staying at home has messed up my sense of time passing even more than before the Covid-19 stuff. Things are opening up around me but I'm still being really cautious. This week's news reported that certain blood types seem to get a worse case of the virus than other blood types. Naturally, it is my blood type that is hit harder. Between my age, suppressed immune system, and now blood type, I feel targeted.
