My teaser this week is from a book that I have been eager to read. I am reading Hard Bitten by Chloe Neill. This is the fourth in her Chicagoland Vampire series and is urban fantasy.

I have enjoyed getting to know Merit and her friends and am fascinated by her world. I love the quick wit and the romance in these stories.

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.  It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

This was a busy week and I got less reading done than I had hoped.

Last Sunday a friend and I went up to the Mall of America for the Richelle Mead book signing. It was great. I got the latest Vampire Academy autographed for my students and the first two books in her other series autographed for me. She read a bit from her August release - Blood Lines - and made me very eager to read it.

On the way home my friend and I stopped at the casino and both made money.

Then on Monday, I finally got my glasses and had to have a couple of appointments to get them adjusted correctly.

I just have 4 more days with students and then one teacher day before my summer vacation begins. I can hardly wait to sleep in and read whatever I want. I'll be traveling up to Duluth for the summer to spend time at my summer home and with my brother. I am looking forward to the reading and relaxing.

Last week I read:

The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross is a young adult novel. It is also steampunk which I find a really fun genre. This story was really entertaining. I got the book from NetGalley for review but it is available now. My review will be posted on June 1.

Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton is a 2011 Young Adult Debut novel. This one is a paranormal that concerns itself with magic. This magic requires blood. It was a very interesting take with fascinating characters and a rather unique system of magic. My review will be posted on May 30.

Hard Bitten by Chloe Neill is in her Chicagoland Vampire series. I am a fan of this urban fantasy series with smart, quick witted characters and interesting situations. This was an action packed and tension filled episode.  My review will be posted on June 2.

I am currently reading The Gathering by Kelley Armstrong. Here is the product description:

My plans after that aren't very specific. I plan to pick something from these stacks (and, no, I didn't go to BEA. I gathered these all over the course of the school year and haven't had a chance to read them yet.)

In My Mailbox (May 29, 2011)

I guarantee that your TBR pile will grow when you see all the wonderful books everyone gets. You will discover lots of great blogs and lots of books that you won't be able to live without.

All I can say is "thank goodness the Kindle doesn't get heavier with each book you load onto it" because this was a week when I added to my Kindle more than to my physical TBR stack.

I got two more books by Vivian Arend from her Pacific Passions series -- Silent Storm and Stormy Seduction. I have quite a bit of her work on the Kindle but will have to admit that I haven't read any of it yet. I am hoping to get to them this summer when I have more reading time and fewer review books on my stack.

I also added Carnal Secrets by Nadia Lee to the Kindle. This one sounds like a fun, sexy romance great for leisure time reading. 

Fortune's Deception by Karen Erickson was a free Kindle book this week. I chose it because it is about someone who wins the lottery and has her life changed. I would love to have that problem! (I mean winning the lottery, not necessarily having my life changed.)

I did get a couple of print books as a result of my trip to a Richelle Mead book signing. A friend gave me her second copy of Thorn Queen. I already had the Kindle copy that was a free book a while ago but haven't read it yet. I bought Iron Crowned so that I would have the whole series is print for my bookshelves.

ARC Review: Trace of Fever by Lori Foster

My Thoughts: This was the second in the Men Who Walk the Edge of Honor series and was just as wonderful as the first. Trace Rivers was a great character who followed his own path and had his own definition of honor. He was determined to bring down Murray Coburn. He was acting as his bodyguard until he could gather the evidence he needed to bring him down.


Priss was determined to kill Murray. He had attacked her mother and caused her to live in such fear that she warped Priss's childhood. Now that her mother had passed away, Priss was determined to have her revenge. 


Priss was young and inexperienced but very stubborn and determined. Trace had all he could do to keep his cover intact and still manage to protect Priss. Murray is aided by his evil, psychotic girlfriend Helene who is his chemist making the potions to keep the girls quiet and who also wants Trace. She takes an immediate dislike to Priss.


We do get a chance to visit Dare and Molly when Trace takes Priss there to get her out of danger. We also get a chance to meet the hero of the last book in the trilogy when we meet Jackson. Jackson has a thing for Trace's sister and has a very quirky sense of humor. I chuckled with embarrassment when he grabs Priss out of her shower and shoves her out a window to get her out of danger from the evil Helene.


This was an exciting story filled with action and romance. I think anyone who appreciates romantic suspense will really enjoy this one.

"Not yet," Trace told her, unmoved by the false show of emotion. "But the idea of putting you over my knee gets more tempting by the second."

Review: Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris

Gradually, Sookie is drawn into the plot-which is much more complicated than she knows...


My Thoughts: This was a frenetically busy episode in Sookie's life. In the course of two days Merlotte's is fire-bombed, baddies invade Merlotte's and attempt to hurt Sookie, other baddies invade her house and attempt to kidnap her, Sookie and Eric are invited to visit Victor's new joint and Victor attempts a number of power-plays, Sookie and Eric have a number of misunderstandings and she breaks her blood bond with him, Sookie accompanies her cousin's son Hunter to Kindergarten round-up, Sookie plans a baby shower and an assassination, and Sookie learns more about her grandmother's relationship with faeries. 


This is definitely not an entry point for people who are not familiar with the Sookie Stackhouse series. It felt very much like a "middle book." While there was movement on a lot of plot threads, there was very little closure on anything. There was so much action that character development took the back seat. Sookie does realize that her attitudes about almost everything are changing and she still regrets the more morally certain Sookie that she left behind. 


One plot thread that really interested me was Sookie's changing relationship with faeries. She knows that Claude and Dermot have agendas that she isn't aware of and now she is starting to worry about what they are. She knows that being around faeries makes her feel good but she is wondering if the good feeling has a hidden cost. 


This was a quick read. I got caught up in the story and didn't want to put the book down. I enjoyed the wild ride. I look forward to the next book to see if some of the loose threads in this story get tied off.

"I try to burn you up, and the fire goes out." She was still at full volume. "I give those jerks free drugs and sex, and send them to grab you, and they bungle it. I try your house, and the magic won't let me enter. I've tried to kill you over and over, and you just won't die!"


I almost felt like apologizing.

The Wedding of the Century by Mary Jo Putney


This was such a nice romance. The hero was the quiet younger brother who unexpectedly inherits a dukedom. The heroine an American Princess who has been groomed to be aristocrat's wife. He met her and fell in love before becoming a duke but she almost doesn't remember him because she was entranced with a more handsome and charming rogue at the time. Their marriage has a rocky beginning mainly because she is railroaded into it by her domineering mother and because her mother has made her believe that it is unladylike to enjoy marital passion. Also, he has his own mother issues and is used to concealing his feelings. 


Jesse's Wife by Kristin James


Amy is the plain older sister who is overshadowed by her younger, more vibrant sister. When a handsome guest asks her to take a walk in the moonlight, she is flattered. Unfortunately, he is a cad who is determined to compromise her and force her into marriage. She is rescued by Jesse who is a horse trainer on her father's ranch. He has loved her for a long time but knows she is socially out of his reach. Rather than marry the cad, she marries Jesse but the two are not communicating well. She thinks he married her out of pity; he thinks she really loved the cad.


Seduced by Starlight by Charlotte Featherstone


Blossom is a duke's daughter betrothed to a younger son of a neighbor. They love each other but are not "in love." When he finds a woman he loves, Blossom lets him go and clears the way for his older brother Jase. Jase has loved Blossom for years and has the reputation of being a rake. Blossom is afraid to trust him with her heart. But Jase seduces her to his point of view.


It is interesting that in two of the three stories the reason for the marriage and the conflict in it is based on "current to the day" social-moral philosophies. In the first story, the conflict comes from the bride's mistaken idea that women don't feel lust or, if they do, they are loose women undeserving of their husband's respect. The whole idea of an arranged marriage and bridal ignorance is rather appalling if you look at it with 21st Century eyes. The second story has to do with a young woman being "compromised" by walking in the moonlight with a single man and needing to be married to save her reputation. 


All the stories were well-written and engaging. I recommend this book to lovers of historical romance.

My teaser is from a book that has been calling to me from my TBR stack since the day it came in the mail -- Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris. I feel like I'm visiting an old friend every time I read one of the Sookie Stackhouse books.

Whew! I just got back from the Cities where I finally got a chance to meet Richelle Mead and have some books signed. She was scheduled to come in December but got snowed out. She was due in the same day that the Metrodome roof collapsed. Today the skies were threatening thunderstorms but we managed to get there and back with just a few rain showers. The signing was great!

I am finally catching up on all of my review books and can start whittling away at my TBR mountain.

Here is what I read last week:

I had Trace of Fever by Lori Foster from NetGalley. It is the second in the trilogy. I read the first for Lori's recent blog tour and really liked the story. This one was also great romantic suspense. My review will be posted on May 28 and the book comes out May 31.

Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris has been calling my name from my TBR stack. I couldn't resist reading that one this week. My review will be posted on May 26.

Mercy by Rebecca Lim was a young adult paranormal that I got from NetGalley. This one features an angel who has lost her memory and finds herself waking up in other bodies frequently. I really liked it. My review will be posted on May 26. The book is available now. 

Angel Burn by L. A. Weatherly was an other young adult book I got from NetGalley. This one also featured angels but these angels acted more like vampires. It was another great story. My review will be posted on May 28 and the book will be available on May 24.

Awaken by Katie Kacvinsky was still another young adult book I got from NetGalley. This one is a dystopia about a society where everything is done on computer. It was interesting and entertaining. I could see that sort of society grow from our society today. The book comes out on May 23 and my review will be posted on May 25.

I am currently reading Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton. This is her young adult debut novel. This one is about magic. I am really enjoying it and can't wait to find some more reading time to finish it. This has been described as a "dark and disturbing paranormal romance."

Next week, I have two more review books to catch up on.

Beyond those two books, I don't know what I'll be choosing next week. I do plan to alternate one adult book with one young adult book since both piles are really tall now.

This week I got one free book for my Kindle. I also got four ARCs from NetGalley. I said I was going to catch up on all my review books and take the summer off to read my own books. But these were books I couldn't resist.

I read Lori Foster's When You Dare as a part of her blog tour. I liked the story and was eager to read the next books in the series. I was very excited to see them at NetGalley. Hopefully, I will get them read well in advance of publication so that I can help build buzz for these great romantic suspense titles.

While looking around NetGalley, I also grabbed a book by Diana Palmer. She used to be an automatic buy for me but I haven't read anything by her for a number of years now. I am eager to see what Merciless is like.

I also had to get The Creed Legacy by Linda Lael Miller. I have already read and reviewed A Creed in Stone Creek and Creed's Honor.

This is the free book for my Kindle that I couldn't resist.

Fortune's Deception by Karen Erickson -- Who hasn't dreamed of winning the lottery? Throw in some romance and you got me. I hope it is as good as it looks.

On My Wishlist: Hit List by Laurell K. Hamilton

On My Wishlist is a fun weekly event hosted by Book Chick City and runs every Saturday. It's where people list all the books they desperately want but haven't actually bought yet. My book choice this week is Hit List by Laurell K. Hamilton. This is the 20th book in the Anita Blake series. I am choosing this one not because of the fulsome plot description at Amazon which says only "Word has leaked to Anita Blake that hit men are headed for St. Louis- and that she, Jean-Claude, and Richard are the targets." but because this series is one of my guilty pleasures and I usually enjoy getting caught up in Anita's drama.

I am having this one sent to my summer home and it should be waiting for me when I arrive there. It should be a great way to kick off my summer reading.

My Thoughts: This is everything I like in romantic suspense. The hero was uber-alpha, confident, and competent but with a heart that wasn't afraid to love. The heroine was also strong, confident and competent. Nevertheless, they need each other. 


Molly was kidnapped and kept cative in Mexico. Dare rescued her while he was rescuing his good friend's little sister. Dare is determined to find out who kidnapped Molly and to protect her -- for life. There are a number of possible suspects. Was it her father (their relationship is really bad)? Her ex-fiance? One of her readers? Molly writes romantic suspense and one of her books is going to be made into a movie. 


I liked the interplay between Dare and Molly. At first, Molly is determined to be strong and to get through the aftermath of her kidnapping alone. She keeps saying the she is "fine" which really irritates Dare. Dare begins by wanting just to protect Molly but she gradually creeps into his life until he can't imagine his life without her. He is so tender with her. It provides a great contrast to how tough he is with the rest of the world. 


I enjoyed following along as Dare and Molly tried to figure out who had her kidnapped and why they did it. It took me until two/thirds of the way through the book to be pretty sure that I knew who the villain was. 


This was a great story and book one of a series about "Men Who Walk the Edge of Honor."

Shaking her head, Molly pondered aloud, "What did I ever see in you, Adrian?"

Dare snorted. "I was just wondering the same thing."

That insulted Adrian. "I'm a hell of a good catch!"

"No." Molly shook her head. "You were just...handy. A convenient companion. Handsome, yes. Educated. But now...now I can't believe I was ever so dumb, or so desperate."

Dare frowned down at her. "You were desperate?"

It is a wonderful, traditional western romance. The hero is a modern day cowboy - loyal, honorable, hard-working, caring, and easy on the eyes.

I had a good reading week. I am slowly lowering my stack of books for review. All of the books on my list are May 2011 releases.

Last Week I Finished:

Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier was a great beginning to a young adult time travel series. My review will be posted on May 16.

No Place Like Holmes by Jason Lethcoe is a young adult/middle grade historical mystery about a young boy and his uncle who happen to live in the same building as Sherlock Holmes. It was a fun adventure with fantastic inventions and even a sea monster. My review will be posted on May 18.

Dreamland Social Club by Tara Altebrando was a young adult contemporary about a girl coming to Coney Island to learn about the mother who died when she was six and to learn about herself too. My review will be posted on May 21.

Creed's Honor by Linda Lael Miller is a contemporary, western romance. It is the second in a trilogy. It features modern day cowboys and an extremely cute dog named Valentino. My review will be posted on May 18.

The Dark City #1 (Relic Master) by Catherine Fisher is a young adult epic fantasy. I thought the world building was very good. I also thought the adventure and the magic were well done. I have already added the next three books to my Amazon wishlist as they will come out in June, July, and August. My review will be posted on May 23. 

The Wedding of the Century & Other Stories by Mary Jo Putney, Kristin James, and Charlotte Featherstone is an anthology with three historical romances. All of them were very well done. I love Putney's work but wasn't familiar with the other two authors. Now I have two more authors to look for when I'm looking for historical romances. My review will be posted on May 25.

I am currently reading:

Mercy by Rebecca Lim. This is a young adult book that is about a fallen angel. "The first in a dazzling new series, Mercy masterfully weaves romance, mystery and the supernatural into a spell-binding tale." I like the concept of this one and hope the execution matches it.
