Friday Memes: Star Trek Federation: The First 150 Years by David A. Goodman

Happy Friday everybody!
Book Beginnings on Friday is now hosted by Rose City Reader. The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice. Check out the links above for the rules and for the posts of the participants each week. Don’t dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.
This week I am spotlighting the most unusual book I have ever been asked to review. I was approached by Wunderkind PR to review Star Trek Federation: The First 150 Years by David A. Goodman. This book which comes on a lighted pedestal will made a great coffee table book for the devoted Trekkie or Trekker in your life. I was sent a PDF of the text portion of this book. Here is the description:
Assembled as a Special Exhibit on Memory Alpha, Star Trek Federation: The First 150 Years celebrates the 150th anniversary of the founding of the United Federation of Planets.

This unprecedented illustrated volume chronicles the pivotal era leading up to Humankind's First Contact with Vulcan in 2063, the Romulan War in 2156, the creation of the Federation in 2161, and the first 150 years of the intergalactic democracy up until the year 2311. Meticulously researched, this account covers a multitude of alien species, decisive battles, and the technology that made the Age of Exploration possible. It includes field sketches, illustrations, and reproductions of historic pieces of art from across the Galaxy, along with over fifty excerpts from key Federation documents and correspondence, Starfleet records, and intergalactic intelligence.

Housed in a pedestal display complete with lights and an audio introduction by Admiral Hikaru Sulu, this deluxe edition also features five removable documents from the Federation Archives, including Zefram Cochrane's early sketch of the warp-drive engine, a handwritten letter from young Jim Kirk, and the first-known diagram of a Trill symbiont.

Product Features:
     • Pedestal display featuring electronic lights and sound (13.5” x 13.5” x 4”)
     • Audio introduction by Admiral Hikaru Sulu
     • 176-page hardcover book with four-color illustration throughout
     • Envelope containing 5 removable artifacts
     • Over fifty excerpts from key Federation documents and correspondence, Starfleet records, and intergalactic intelligence
Beginning:
The two figures met on a chilly April evening near a missile silo in northern Montana.
Friday 56:
Though many sources of the valuable crystal dilithium -- essential to the warp engines of the interstellar civilizations who used matter/anti-matter propulsion—had been discovered and developed over the centuries by many space-going species, it wasn’t until the beginning of the twenty-third century that a Klingon scientist named Krent developed a theory as to where the greatest concentration of these resources were.
I don't read nonfiction and am not sure how I will like this faux-nonfiction but I spent a whole lot of my twenties and thirties deep in the world of Star Trek and am eager to give it a try.

ARC Review: Kept by Shawntelle Madison

Kept
Author: Shawntelle Madison
Publication: Ballantine Books (November 27, 2012)

Description: A funny and sexy new paranormal romance, perfect for fans of Charlaine Harris and Patricia Briggs, Kept features the charmingly quirky werewolf, Natalya Stravinsky, as she navigates the minefields of love and war in the Garden State.

Fresh from defending her pack in battle, Natalya Stravinsky, a whip-smart werewolf with a lovable neurotic streak, wants a little rest and relaxation. Once an outcast, she's now eager to rejoin the ranks of her New Jersey pack, and has even gotten a handle on her obsessive urge to hoard holiday ornaments. Yet Nat barely has time to revel in her progress before the next crisis comes howling at her door.

Nat's father has suddenly gone missing, captured by the Russian werewolf mafia. And as Nat steps up to save her dad from a mob boss's deadly game, two men step in to play another round for her heart: her gorgeous alpha ex-boyfriend, Thorn, and her new flame, the sweetly sensitive wizard Nick. With her life growing more harried by the minute, Nat must stay cool, calm, and collected . . . or else risk losing everything.

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this quirky story. Our heroine Natalya is coping with her OCD, pining for Thorn who is her former boyfriend and now planning for an arranged marriage with Erica, and confused about her relationship with white wizard Nick. When her father doesn't return home after doing some sort of job for an old colleague in Atlantic City, Nat, her brother Alex, and Thorn go there to find out where he is.

Nat learns that her father had incurred a blood debt that was finally called in. The first part of the story is about Nat assuming the responsibility for the debt and heading off to Maine with a truck she can't drive and an unknown cargo. She battles some supernaturals along the way and calls her friend Nick to help her out. Nick comes along with two other friends from their therapy sessions - a mermaid who is afraid of returning to the ocean and a Muse who can only be seen by supernaturals and the authors she inspires. Nat has to show that her OCD doesn't handicap her when she needs to do something for her family. This part of the story involves battles and contact with fairies who are ruthless and bloodthirsty.

The second part of the story is about Nat preparing for the trials that would allow her to re-enter the werewolf pack. But training for them is difficult if you are busy solving your father's problems. And they are difficult if you have to deal with your former boyfriend's jealous fiance.

I liked the cast of quirky characters and the confusion that Nat feels when she thinks about the two men in her life. As her wise grandmother tells her, one is her heart and the other is her soul. She has to figure out which is which.

This story was a nice read for fans of paranormal romances. The characters were likable and well-rounded. The fact that the main character has a mental illness added to the story. I really liked the variety of supernaturals that the author included. And I liked the strong family dynamics in Natalya's close knit Russian family.

Favorite Quote:
My damn knees buckled when Nick tried to deepen the kiss.

No romantic moment for me tonight. His lips ended up making out with my nose and I got a mouthful of his chin.

Yep, it was a awkward as it sounds.
I got this eARC from NetGalley. You can buy your copy here.

WoW: House Rules by Chloe Neill

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This is where we can post our links and see what books others are waiting for. It spotlights upcoming releases.

I don't know an urban fantasy fan who is not waiting for House Rules by Chloe Neill. Add me to the number! House Rules is the seventh book in the Chicagoland Vampires series and will be released on Feb. 5, 2013.

Here is the description:
In a city full of vampires, trouble never sleeps.

At the tender age of twenty-seven, Merit became a sword-wielding vampire. Since then, she’s become the protector of her House, watched Chicago nearly burn to the ground, and seen her Master fall and rise. Now she’ll see her mettle—and her metal—tested like never before.

It started with two . . . Two rogues vanishing without a trace. Someone is targeting Chicago’s vampires, and anyone could be next. With their house in peril, Merit and her Master, the centuries-old Ethan Sullivan, must race to stop the disappearances. But as they untangle a web of secret alliances and ancient evils, they realize their foe is more familiar, and more powerful, than they could have ever imagined.
What do you think? Are you reading this series?

This week my teaser comes from Kept by Shawntelle Madison. I got this urban fantasy featuring werewolves from NetGalley. It is the sequel to Coveted and is being released today.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? Nov. 26, 2012

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.  It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

I had a good reading week this past week. My Thanksgiving Break was a chance for me to have my own personal readathon. And the snowy weather in Northern Minnesota made staying inside an absolute pleasure. I finished six books.
I read Coveted by Shawntelle Madison from my TBR shelves and then Kept which was the sequel on my Kindle as a review book from NetGalley. These were interesting urban fantasy novels in part because the main character suffers from OCD. My review for Coveted is here and my review for Kept will be posted on Nov. 29.
I also read Star Trek Federation: The First 150 Years by David A. Goodman which is faux nonfiction complete with footnotes for the devoted Star Trek fan. My review will be posted on Dec. 1.
I read three young adult books from my review stack.
  • The Forsaken by Lisa M. Stasse is the first book in a new dystopia. It was entertaining. My review is here.
  • Mystic City by Theo Lawrence is also the first book in a series. This one was a fantasy sort of dystopia that was entertaining but not very original. My review will be posted on Nov. 29.
  • Vessel by Sarah Beth Durst was an epic fantasy that I thought was amazing. The characters where life-like and the setting was very well done. I loved this book and, unusual for the genre, this novel was the complete story very satisfyingly told. My review will be posted on Dec. 1. I will be donating this one to my high school media center and buying myself a keeper copy too.

I am currently reading Tears in Rain by Rosa Montero. This is a review book that was sent to me by Wunderkind PR because they know I am a science fiction fan. I haven't read much but am already fascinated with the world.

Here are the next books on my stack. They make up all of the December review books that I have received so far. (I think I have a couple of Amazon Vine books coming that will also be December releases.)
I have finally been able to read some of the review books on my stack that were released before I got them. I have Gold by Chris Cleave which I got from Amazon Vine and Under the Desert Moon by Emma Meade which I received from the author.
I have a couple more Amazon Vine picks on my stack though these are December releases - Guardians of Stone by Anita Clenney and She Can Tell by Melinda Leigh.
Waiting for me on my Kindle are The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken and Scent of Magic by Maria V. Snyder.

I am hoping for a good reading week this week too but I have one of those weeks with something scheduled after school every day except Monday. Wish me luck!

Book Review: Coveted by Shawntelle Madison

Coveted
Author: Shawntelle Madison
Publication: Ballantine Books; Original edition (April 24, 2012)

Description: SOMETIMES WHAT YOU COVET IS IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP.

For werewolf Natalya Stravinsky, the supernatural is nothing extraordinary. What does seem strange is that she's stuck in her hometown of South Toms River, New Jersey, the outcast of her pack, selling antiques to finicky magical creatures. Restless and recovering from her split with gorgeous ex-boyfriend, Thorn, Nat finds comfort in an unusual place: her obsessively collected stash of holiday trinkets. But complications pile up faster than her ornaments when Thorn returns home--and the two discover that the spark between them remains intense.

Before Nat can sort out their relationship, she must face a more immediate and dangerous problem. Her pack is under attack from the savage Long Island werewolves--and Nat is their first target in a turf war. Toss in a handsome wizard vying for her affection, a therapy group for the anxious and enchanted, and the South Toms River pack leader ready to throw her to the wolves, and it's enough to give anybody a panic attack. With the stakes as high as the full moon, Nat must summon all of her strength to save her pack and, ultimately, herself.

My Thoughts: I didn't know what to think when I began this story about a werewolf with OCD. Natalya is a long-time sufferer. Her OCD is bad enough that she has been thrown out of her werewolf pack because it makes her a weak link. She is surviving working at an antique store and collecting her Christmas, Hannukah and Kwanzaa ornaments and decorations. When her old boyfriend Thorn comes back to town the pressure gets greater. He is the son of the alpha who kicked her out of the pack and he is supposed to marry a girl from one of the high status families in the pack. But he can't stay away from her.

When the Long Island pack tries to move in and take over Nat's former pack things get even worse. The alpha of that pack has targeted Nat for reasons unknown to her. She feels isolated and alone. But she has decided to return to therapy to see if she can get her "collecting" under control. There she meets Nick who is a White Wizard who has the same sort of OCD she has. Nick comes to her rescue a few times when she is threatened. Nat also makes a friend in Quentin who is a necromancer who works as a janitor at the same antique store where Nat works. Their first - and only - date was funny in a creepy way.

Nat is also supported when her best friend Aggie comes to visit. Aggie is running away from her father and an arranged marriage. She is a high status werewolf who has an eating disorder. She and Nat became friends when both were sent to a camp for troubled werewolves.

This was an entertaining and unusual urban fantasy story. I really came to like Nat and look forward to reading the sequel to this book. I am eager to see how the relationship with Thorn and with Nick work out.

Favorite Quote:
"You think of everything, don't you?" Aggie laughed. "If I obsessed over things as much as you do, I'd become a stockbroker."

"OCD does not mean I have savant-like mathematical skills." I snatched the only umbrella before she had a chance to take it.

Before I left the car she asked, "So is there anything good about it?"

I didn't know how to answer that. Every day, with every decision I made, I faced my condition. If there was something good about having my disorder, that perk had better show itself soon.
I bought this one. You can buy your copy here.

This week I am spotlighting a book from my TBR mountain. I chose Coveted by Shawntelle Madison both because it is about werewolves and because I have the sequel next on my review stack. Here is the description:

ARC Review: Running Wild by Linda Howard and Linda Jones

Running Wild: The Men From Battle Ridge
Author(s): Linda Howard and Linda Jones
Publication: Ballantine Books (November 27, 2012)

Description: In book 1 of this steamy new contemporary Western romance series by two blockbuster authors, a cowboy and a woman on the run take a stand and fight for love.

Carlin Reed lives in fear, off the grid, moving from place to place. So Battle Ridge, Wyoming, a small town in the middle of nowhere, seems like a good place to lie low for a while. But after becoming cook and housekeeper to cattle rancher Zeke Decker, Carlin suspects that she’s made her first mistake. Rugged, sexy, and too distracting for his own good, Zeke is pure temptation mixed with something deep and primal that makes Carlin feel almost safe. Soon things are getting way too hot in the kitchen.

Zeke doesn’t challenge Carlin’s terms: cash, dead bolts, and no questions. It is easy to see that she’s a woman in trouble. Problem is, he’s so blindsided by his attraction to her he can’t think straight. Zeke tries to stay all business, no complications—but that game plan is sabotaged the second Carlin gets under his skin. And when her terrifying past follows her to the ranch, Carlin faces a heartbreaking choice: run away from the man she loves, or put him in the crosshairs of a madman.

My Thoughts: Carlin is on the run. After two dates with a guy named Brad, he developed an obsession with her - sneaking into her apartment, following her, making harassing phone calls. When she reported him, she was blown off. He was a local boy and a cop and had made sure no one saw the two of them together. First Carlin runs to Dallas. However, Brad followed her and killed a woman he thought was her because she had lent her friend her raincoat.

Now Carlin in trying to live off the grid. She is travelling from town to town to try to get away from Brad. She comes into a small Wyoming town only intending to stop for something to eat and then to move on but she finds a job and and friend Kat. Kat has a cousin who is a rancher who needs a housekeeper but hasn't been able to find one.

Carlin thinks Zeke is hot but also really grumpy. She is torn between taking the job and moving on. She decides that an isolated ranch wouldn't be a bad spot to be for the winter. Zeke will pay her in cash and let her build up a nest egg for the next time she has to run. Both are convinced that the job is just temporary and neither one is looking for a relationship.

However, as they get to know each other, they come to love each other. But it isn't until the truck she is riding in almost slides off the edge of a mountain in an ice storm the Carlin decides to begin a physical relationship with Zeke. The love scenes are hot and it is easy to see that they are falling in love with each other. But the stalker hasn't forgotten about Carlin.

This one has danger, romance and hot cowboys along with a seriously creepy stalker. Fans of romantic suspense will love it.

Favorite Quote:
"This isn't exactly New York City, you know," he said, sounding more than a little grumpy.

"My bad. And here I was all set on going to a Broadway show on my half-day off," she responded calmly, without turning to look at him. "I guess I'll just have to use my opera glasses to spy on cows."

Zeke started to grin, caught himself, and growled, just a little. He didn't want or need to be entertained by her, but damn, it was hard to resist. The thing was, unless he was wrong about her, she wanted him to get grumpy at her verbal jabs. "They don't dance much, and they never sing. I hope you didn't have your heart set on a musical."
I got this eARC from NetGalley. You can buy your copy here.

WoW:Angel in Chains by Cynthia Eden

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This is where we can post our links and see what books others are waiting for. It spotlights upcoming releases.

While browsing Amazon for upcoming releases, I spotted Angel in Chains by Cynthia Eden which will be released on Nov. 27. I will admit being drawn to the cover first. But this description didn't hurt:
As a fallen Angel of Death, Azrael is cursed to walk the earth alone in search of redemption. One night, as he wanders the streets of New Orleans, he discovers a woman surrounded by panther shifters. No longer able to contain the anger simmering within, Az summons his dark powers and attacks, determined to protect this innocent human from certain death. Only Jade Pierce is no delicate flower. She's spent years learning to survive and fight the evil forces sent by her ex-lover who refuses to let her go. But after seeing Az in action, she figures she could use a little supernatural help. And so she plans a course of seduction guaranteed to arouse his interest and his angelic passions...
Can't wait to read it!

This week my teaser comes from Running Wild by Linda Howard and Linda Jones. I received this eARC from NetGalley. I chose it on the strength of Linda Howard's name. I really enjoyed her contemporary romances when I used to read them. I was eager to see what she was writing now.
Here is the description:

The cover was also a draw. ;-)

Teaser:
"It'll do," she said, her tone definite. Luxurious? No. But the spare quarters met all her needs, and even without the private bath it was far superior to sleeping in the Subaru, which she'd done more than once, and didn't like.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? (Nov. 19, 2012)

I finished five books. All of them were from my November review book stack.
Dangerous Waters by Toni Anderson was an excellent romantic suspense title. I liked it so much that I went to Amazon and added two more of her romantic suspense titles to my Kindle. My review is here.

Running Wild by Linda Howard and Linda Jones was a romance with some suspense. It was pretty typical for the genre but I did enjoy the byplay between the two main characters. Both characters were well-rounded people and their romance felt realistic. My review will be posted on Nov. 22.
Vlad All Over by Beth Orsoff was a Chick Lit sort of romance. Both main characters had strengths and flaws that made the result something other than the usual HEA that I like in a romance. I was interested to see that the story will continue in a second book. I will be looking for it. My review is here.
Griffin's Storm by Darby Karchut was an excellent third book in a series. I recommend this one highly. It had  adventure, danger, friendship, and some romance. It would make a good gift for the middle grader or younger YA reader in your life. My review will be posted on Nov. 22.

Miss Fortune Cookie by Lauren Bjorkman was a contemporary young adult novel that explored growing up, the changing nature of friendship, and dealing with cultural expectations in a fun story that included advice from fortune cookies. My review is here.
I am currently reading The Forsaken by Lisa M. Stasse which is a young adult dystopia. I have just begun it and haven't formed an opinion yet. This is the first book in a new trilogy.

Next week is my Thanksgiving Break. I am hauling these review books home with me to read. I should have lots of reading time as I don't intend to do any shopping this weekend. Black Friday is a time for me to stay out of the Mall and any other place where crowds gather as there is nothing in the world I want bad enough to fight a crowd to get it.
Kept by Shawntelle Madison is an adult urban fantasy on my Kindle.

Mystic City by Theo Lawrence is a print YA fantasy that I got from Amazon Vine. As is usually the case in YA these days, this is the first book in a trilogy.
Tears in Rain by Rosa Montero is a science fiction story I got from Wunderkind PR.

I got Vessel by Sarah Beth Durst from the author. I am intrigued by this fantasy and can't wait to start it.
I got a PDF of Star Trek Federation: The First 150 Years by David A. Goodman from Wunderkind PR for review too. I think it is time to immerse myself in all things Star Trek again. Too bad I didn't get a finished copy with the cool, lighted stand. This one is definitely a coffeetable book for the devoted Trekkie.

If I finish these, I will have my December review books home with me too. I would love to get a little bit ahead before the Holiday season gets even busier.

What are your plans for this week?

Stacking the Shelves (Nov. 18, 2012)

Tynga of Tynga's Reviews has a meme to spotlight the books we receive each week. Visit her site to check out the linky and see what everyone gets. I guarantee that your TBR pile will grow.

This week I added six books to my stack. On the Kindle are:
I just finished Danger Waters by Toni Anderson and had to go looking for anything else she has written. I found Storm Warning and Edge of Survival. I hope they are as good as the book I read.
I have recently become a fan of steampunk. I had Skies of Steel by Zoe Archer on my Kindle already. So I added Nights of Steel by Nico Rosso, Skies of Fire by Zoe Archer, and Night of Fire by Nico Rosso to complete the set.

I also added a print review book to my stack this week.
Tears in Rain by Rosa Montero was sent to my by Emily at Wunderkind PR. I thought it sounded like an interesting science fiction story.

What did you add to your stack this week?
