Audiobook Review: Midnight Bayou by Nora Roberts

Midnight Bayou

Author:
Nora Roberts
Narrator: James Daniels & Sarah Burr
Publication: Brilliance Audio (June 10, 2008)
Length: 9 hours and 14 minutes

Description: Declan Fitzgerald had always been the family maverick, but even he couldn't understand his impulse to buy a dilapidated mansion on the outskirts of New Orleans. All he knew was that ever since he saw Manet Hall, he'd been enchanted - and obsessed - with it. So when the opportunity to buy the house comes up Declan jumps at the chance to live out a dream.

Determined to restore Manet Hall to its former splendor, Declan begins the daunting renovation room by room, relying on his own labor and skills. But the days spent in total isolation in the empty house take a toll. He is seeing visions of days from a century past, and experiencing sensations of terror and nearly unbearable grief - sensations not his own, but those of a stranger. Local legend has it that the house is haunted, and with every passing day Declan's belief in the ghostly presence grows.

Only the companionship of the alluring Angelina Simone can distract him from the mysterious happenings in the house, but Angelina too has her own surprising connection to Manet Hall - a connection that will help Declan uncover a secret that's been buried for a hundred years.

My Thoughts: Declan Fitzgerald leaves his home in Boston, job in a law firm, and fiancĂ©e to purchase a rundown mansion outside of New Orleans and begins his new career as a carpenter and builder. The task is daunting not only because of the scope of the renovation but also because of the ghosts who haunt the house.

Angelina Simone is a local bar owner whose grandmother is Declan's neighbor. She also has a family connection to Manet Hall. Angelina is also afraid of falling in love and trusting her heart to anyone. However, Declan takes one look at her and decides that she is the woman he is going to marry and build a family with.

Together the two need to deal with the ghosts and Angelina's prejudice against love. Declan finds himself taken over by the ghosts which results in memory loss and sleepwalking which frighten him.

The ghost's stories are told in flashbacks when a poor, Cajun young woman marries into a wealthy family whose matriarch really despises her. She is raped and murdered by her brother-in-law leaving her infant daughter and a husband who grieves her disappearance to the point of suicide.

This was an excellent story about honoring the past without repeating it. The characters were intriguing and well-developed. The romance was nicely done.

Audiobook Review: Dark Summer by Iris Johansen

Dark Summer

Author:
Iris Johansen
Narrator: Joyce Bean
Publication: Brilliance Audio (October 21, 2008)
Length: 11 hours and 38 minutes

Description: Devon Brady is a devoted veterinarian working in a makeshift hospital at an island search and rescue site. When Jude Marrok arrives with his wounded black lab Ned, she has no idea that she is about to be plunged into a whirlwind of terror, destruction, and unstoppable passion.

The last thing Devon needs is to be drawn into Marrok's high-stakes game. And while she feels increasingly drawn to him and his extraordinary dog, she doesn't trust him. Then the bullets start flying and she has nowhere else to run. The body counts gets higher while a mortal mystery swirls around a pack of gifted canines called the "Dogs of Summer."

Is Jude her salvation or her damnation? Are the secrets he's protecting worth killing...or dying for? With lighting-fast pace, unforgettable characters, gut-wrenching action, and sizzling sensuality, is compelling new terrain for this master storyteller.

My Thoughts: Devon Brady is a veterinarian and a member of search and rescue teams. She's volunteering on an island near Venezuela when Jude Marrok arrives with his injured black lab Ned. he leaves Ned with her to treat and says he'll pick him up at her home near Denver. Devon doesn't know what to make of the pair. She loves the dog but wonders if the man is worthy of keeping him.

She returns to Denver and her practice there briefly before Jude calls telling her to take Ned and get out of the office. Jude's enemies have caught up to them and want Ned and are willing to kill anyone who gets in their way. Jude arrives in time to save Devon and Ned, but Devon's staff are murdered.

Jude takes Devon to his ranch to keep her safe. He is intrigued by her but is very slow to share his secrets with her. Ned and three other dogs and all targets for a variety of enemies who want to use them. The dogs have incredibly long life spans and seem to have the ability to heal. Jude will do anything to keep the dogs safe.

The enemies are gathering while Jude and Devon are falling in love. And some of the enemies are right inside his compound. The story is filled with tension and danger for Devon, Jude and the dogs. The action is fast-paced, and the paranormal twist just adds to the story.

This classis Johansen - first published in 2008 - was a great romantic suspense title with enough of the paranormal to add zest.

Audiobook Review: Fired Up by Jayne Ann Krentz

Fired Up

Author:
Jayne Ann Krentz
Narrator: Islay Jacobs
Series: Arcane Society (Book 7)
Publication: Tantor Media (August 27, 2024)
Length: 9 hours and 53 minutes

Description: More than three centuries ago, Nicholas Winters irrevocably altered his genetic makeup in an obsession fueled competition with alchemist and Arcane Society founder Sylvester Jones. Driven to control their psychic abilities, each man's decision has reverberated throughout the family line, rewarding some with powers beyond their wildest dreams, and cursing others to a life filled with madness and hallucinations.

Jack Winters, descendant of Nicholas, has been experiencing nightmares and blackouts—just the beginning, he believes, of the manifestation of the Winters family curse. The legend says that he must find the Burning Lamp or risk turning into a monster. But he can't do it alone; he needs the help of a woman with the gift to read the lamp's dreamlight.

Jack is convinced that private investigator Chloe Harper is that woman. Her talents for finding objects and accessing dream energy are what will save him, but their sudden and powerful sexual pull threatens to overwhelm them both. Danger surrounds them, and it doesn't take long for Chloe to pick up the trail of the missing lamp. And as they draw closer to the lamp, the raw power that dwells within it threatens to sweep them into a hurricane of psychic force.

My Thoughts: Jack Winters has a problem. As a descendent of Nicholas Winters, he fears that he has inherited the Winters' curse which will make his psychic gifts out of control. He needs the Burning Lamp but it went missing on a family moves many years earlier.

Jack comes to Chloe Harper, a private investigator, to find the missing lamp. Chloe has a talent for finding missing things and a psychic gift for reading dream energy. She might be the only one who can save him.

Chloe's ability to read dream energy has become a handicap in her life. Because everyone sheds dream energy, she finds that she can be around anyone who is sleeping and dreaming. This hasn't done good things to her love life. In fact, she's convinced that only celibacy will solve her problem.

As Jack and Chloe search for the Burning Lamp, they fall in love. But eluding a powerful, evil organization that also wants the lamp and Chloe to use it, makes falling in love something that has to come second in both their lives.

This was an entertaining paranormal romance. I like the relationship between Jack and Chloe. I also like Chloe's circle with includes her mutt who has separation issues.

Audiobook Review: Shattering Dawn by Jayne Ann Krentz

Shattering Dawn

Author:
Jayne Ann Krentz
Narrator: Eva Kaminsky
Series: The Lost Night Files (Book 3)
Publication: Recorded Books (January 7, 2025)
Length: 8 hours and 43 minutes

Description: An unsettling investigation teaches two suspicious people how to trust, in the next thrilling novel of the Lost Night Files trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz.

Amelia Rivers, a member of the Lost Night Files podcast team, hires private investigator Gideon Sweetwater to catch the stalker who has been watching her. Amelia suspects that whoever it is may be connected to the shadowy organization responsible for the night that she and her two friends lost to amnesia—a night that upended their lives and left them with heightened paranormal talents.

Gideon believes that Amelia is either paranoid or an outright con artist, but they have a chemistry he can’t resist. He takes the case despite his skepticism. For her part, Amelia has second thoughts about the wisdom of employing the mysterious Mr. Sweetwater. She is wary of the powerful attraction between them and deeply uneasy about the nightmarish paintings on the walls of his home. She senses these were inspired by his own dreams.

Amelia knows she doesn’t have time to find another investigator, and Gideon is forced to reckon with the truth when he disrupts what was intended to be Amelia’s kidnapping. Now the pair is on the run, with no choice but to return to the haunting ruins of the old hotel where Amelia’s lost night occurred. They are desperate to stop a killer, as well as the people who are conducting illegal experiments with a dangerous drug designed to enhance psychic abilities. If they are to survive, they will have to trust each other and the passion that bonds them.

My Thoughts: The final book in the Lost Night Files trilogy stars Amelia Rivers and Gideon Sweetwater.

Since her lost night, Amelia has had her psychic gift of aura reading enhanced. She has also developed a phobia about the dark of night and attracted a stalker. She goes to private investigator Gideon Sweetwater for help finding and discouraging her stalker.

Gideon is still recovering from a previous case when he rescued a young man from a cult. He has a stalker of his own. Fascinated with Amelia, he decides to take her case despite his doubts about her aura reading ability. Gideon has psychic powers of his own which are causing problems in his life.

They travel to the deserted desert hotel where the events of Amelia's lost night occurred and make some discoveries and learn more about each other.

This episode brings many of the events of the trilogy to a satisfying conclusion while still leaving the door open for further books. I enjoyed the romance between Gideon and Amelia. The growing relationship between Gideon and Amelia entertaining to watch. I also enjoyed the paranormal aspects of this story.

Fans of the earlier books in this trilogy will also enjoy this concluding story.

Audiobook Review: The Night Island by Jayne Ann Krentz

The Night Island

Author:
Jayne Ann Krentz
Narrator: Eva Kaminsky
Series: The Lost Night Files (Book 2)
Publication: Recorded Books (January 9, 2024)
Length: 8 hours and 23 minutes

Description: The disappearance of a mysterious informant leads two people desperate for answers to an island of deadly deception in this new novel in the Lost Night Files trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz.

Talia March, Pallas Llewellyn, and Amelia Rivers, bonded by a night they all have no memory of, are dedicated to uncovering the mystery of what really happened to them months ago--an experience that brought out innate psychic abilities in each of them. The women suspect they were test subjects years earlier, and that there are more people like them--all they have to do is find the list. When Talia follows up on a lead from Phoebe, a fan of the trio's podcast, she discovers that the informant has vanished.

Talia isn't the only one looking for Phoebe, however. Luke Rand, a hunted and haunted man who is chasing the same list that Talia is after, also shows up at the meeting place. It's clear he has his own agenda, and they are instantly suspicious of each other. But when a killer begins to stalk them, they realize they have to join forces to find Phoebed the list.

The rocky investigation leads Talia and Luke to a rustic, remote retreat on Night Island in the Pacific Northwest. The retreat promises to rejuvenate guests with the Unplugged Experience. Upon their arrival, Talia and Luke discover guests are quite literally cut off from the outside world because none of their high-tech devices work on the island. It soon becomes clear that Phoebe is not the first person to disappear into the strange gardens that surround the Unplugged Experience retreat. And then the first mysterious death occurs...

My Thoughts: Talia March is following up a tip to the list she and her partners at the Lost Night Files podcast are searching for when she discovers that her informant is missing. Luke Rand, who suffered a lost night of his own, is also looking for the informant and the list. The two are immediately suspicious of each other but agree to team up mostly to not let the other get a head start on the investigation.

Clues lead them to an isolated island off the Washington coast where they discover even more mysteries and, unfortunately for Talia, more dead bodies. Finding bodies has been a consequence of having her psychic abilities ramped up during her lost night.

Luke's ability to read people via their emotions has also ramped up. Now, he is afraid that he has become a psychic assassin who can kill people with his talent. Talia tries to convince him that he's wrong because an ability still requires choice, and she knows he won't choose to become an assassin. Unfortunately, Luke wasn't the only one who had his powers ramped up to become an assassin and the other man who feels his ramp up was more successful is determined to kill Luke.

Not only do Talia and Luke have to deal with the psychic assassin but Night Island was once the site of botanical experiments, and the plant life has gone feral and dangerous. Avoiding an assassin and lethal vegetation give Talia and Luke a strong incentive to work together and learn to trust each other and, finally, to admit that they love each other.

This is the second of a trilogy which means that readers of the first book have more information about the ultimate evil doer who is behind both characters' lost nights and what the ultimate aim is. It was entertaining to watch Luke and Talia gather more pieces of the bigger puzzle as they fell in love.

Audiobook Review: Falling Awake by Jayne Ann Krentz

Falling Awake

Author:
Jayne Ann Krentz
Narrator: Amanda Cobb
Publication: Recorded Books (July 7, 2015)
Length: 10 hours and 55 minutes

Description: A dream interpreter and her mysterious client find themselves in a waking nightmare in this romantic suspense novel from New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz

As a dream interpreter at the Belvedere Center for Sleep Research, Isabel Wright has never lacked attention from the opposite sex. Of course that's because they're hoping she'll shed a little light on their dreams. Lately, however, she's been pining for a man she's never met. She knows him only as Client Number Two and his most intimate dreams have captured her imagination...

But everything goes south when her boss drops dead at his desk and Isabel loses her job—until Client Number Two finally pops up, asking all kinds of questions. His name is Ellis Cutler, and he's even sexier than she imagined him. He's convinced there's a sociopath on their trail, but fortunately that doesn't stop him from introducing Isabel to a passion wilder than she's ever known. Drawn into a web of desire, betrayal, and murder, Isabel and Ellis now have to find the killer before they find themselves falling far too deep...

My Thoughts: Isabel Wright is a dream interpreter for the Belvedere Center for Sleep Research. She was hired by the eccentric owner of the center despite her lack of academic credits and past job at a psychic hotline. When the man who hired her is found dead, his son who is the new owner is quick to fire her.

Isabel actually only had two clients, but their fees made up a large percentage of the center's budget. When the new owner learns this, he wants Isabel back, but she is already exploring other career opportunities.

Ellis Cutler is her Client Number 2. He is convinced that a sociopath is on their trail and needs Isabel's help to find him. Finding him might be difficult because, to everyone but Ellis, he is not only dead but cremated.

Ellis and Isabel fall in love but have to dodge a lot of danger before they can find their way to a happy ending.

This was a longer story, originally published in 2004, that had some of the seeds that have grown to more prominence in Krentz's later works. The story centers around lucid dreaming and the rare people who are able to reliably to that. It also features a secretive government agency doing research into using dreams to track down killers. Ellis worked for the agency and still freelances for it but is mainly a venture capitalist these days. The agency is Client Number 1 on Isabel's schedule.

This was an enjoyable story with a variety of interesting characters.

Audiobook Review: Sleep No More by Jayne Ann Krentz

Sleep No More

Author:
Jayne Ann Krentz
Narrator: Eva Kaminsky
Series: The Lost Night Files (Book 1)
Publication: Recorded Books (January 3, 2023)
Length: 9 hours and 20 minutes

Description: New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz returns with the first novel of the Lost Night Files, an exciting new romantic suspense trilogy about a night that changed three women forever—but that none of them can remember.

Seven months ago, Pallas Llewellyn, Talia March, and Amelia Rivers were strangers, until their fateful stay at the Lucent Springs Hotel. An earthquake and a fire partially destroyed the hotel, but the women have no memory of their time there. Now close friends, the three women co-host a podcast called the Lost Night Files, where they investigate cold cases and hope to connect with others who may have had a similar experience to theirs—an experience that has somehow enhanced the psychic abilities already present in each woman.

After receiving a tip for their podcast, Pallas travels to the small college town of Carnelian, California, to explore an abandoned asylum. Shaken by the dark energy she feels in the building, she is rushing out when she’s stopped by a dark figure—who turns out to be the women's mysterious tipster.

Ambrose Drake is certain he’s a witness to a murder, but without a body, everyone thinks he’s having delusions caused by extreme sleep deprivation. But Ambrose is positive something terrible happened at the Carnelian Sleep Institute the night he was there. Unable to find proof on his own, he approaches Pallas for help, only for her to realize that Ambrose, too, has a lost night that he can’t remember—one that may be connected to Pallas. Pallas and Ambrose conduct their investigation using the podcast as a cover, and while the townsfolk are eager to share what they know, it turns out there are others who are not so happy about their questions—and someone is willing to kill to keep the truth from coming out.

My Thoughts: This is the first book in the Lost Night trilogy. Pallas Llewellyn is an interior designer who has a gift for design that is a psychic talent. After a night she doesn't remember, her gift is greatly enhanced. She and the two other women who were with her when the lost night happened also had their psychic gifts enhanced. They started a podcast to try to discover what happened to them.

A tip to the podcast leads Pallas to a small college town to explore an abandoned asylum. The tipster is Ambrose Drake who is sure that he saw a body being hauled out of the building where he was undergoing tests for sleep deprivation. It turns out that he had a lost night too. He'd always had a talent for aura reading but now he's begun sleepwalking. The only way to avoid it is to not sleep which has led to his extreme sleep deprivation.

Under the guise of making a podcast, Pallas and Ambrose who writes thrillers when he isn't sleep deprived begin to investigate to see if Ambrose's memory is correct. They find a shady doctor and shady college administrators. They also find drug runners. What they don't find is any indication that a woman died the night Ambrose underwent his testing.

I liked the characters and the setting of this story. I liked that Pallas was coming to terms with her newly enhanced psychic gifts and was able to help Ambrose deal with his sleepwalking. I liked the banter between the two main characters. I also liked the romance that developed between the two of them.

Eva Kaminsky does a good job is choosing voices which distinguish each character.

Audiobook Review: Summer in Eclipse Bay by Jayne Ann Krentz

Summer in Eclipse Bay

Author:
Jayne Ann Krentz
Narrator: Gail Shalan
Series: Eclipse Bay (Book 3)
Publication: Tantor Media (September 5, 2023)
Length: 8 hours and 40 minutes

Description: Summer has arrived in Eclipse Bay and things are definitely heating up between the Hartes and the Madisons. It seems that the mysterious new gallery owner, Octavia Brightwell, is thinking about having a scandalous fling with that rogue Nick Harte before she leaves town. As far as Nick is concerned, a short-term affair sounds perfect. But it isn't going to be easy.

One big obstacle is Mitchell Madison. For reasons of his own, Mitchell has taken it upon himself to play guardian to Octavia. He's made it clear that if Nick fools around with her, there will be a price to pay. And then there's Nick's young son, Carson, who has his own agenda where Octavia is concerned. He doesn't want his father messing up his plans.

Summer in Eclipse Bay is going to be eventful this year. Some long-buried secrets from the infamous Harte-Madison feud are about to surface. The past and the present are on a collision course.

My Thoughts: Nick Harte has come back to Eclipse Bay with his almost six-year-old son Carson. Nick is a successful novelist. In fact, a running joke through the story is that no one in Eclipse Bay admits to reading his books.

Octavia Brightwell is a newcomer to Eclipse Bay. She has opened a successful art gallery. She also has a hidden agenda. She wants to help resolve the feud between the Madisons and the Hartes. Only she's too late. The Hartes and Madison have found their own resolutions in the romances between the grandchildren. Octavia is planning to sell the gallery and move on.

When she meets Nick, she's intrigued but he has a reputation for having only short-term affairs since his wife's death. Nick is also intrigued by her and more than willing to have an affair although he isn't the one who wants a short-term affair. Rather than giving her "the talk," it is Octavia who sets the ground rules.

The conflict in the story revolves around a newly discovered and very valuable painting discovered in the estate of a local recluse. It is stolen from Octavia's gallery and the locals are spreading the rumor that she is the one who has stolen it.

At Octavia's request, Nick channels his fictional detective to find the painting and the source of the local rumors.

This was a nice romance and a nice conclusion to the Eclipse Bay trilogy.

Audiobook Review: Scream for Me by Karen Rose

Scream for Me

Author:
Karen Rose
Narrator: Tavia Gilbery
Series: Romantic Suspense (Book 8)
Publication: Grand Central Publishing (May 13, 2008); Blackstone Audio (June 4, 2008)
Length: 16 hours and 17 minutes

Description: Special Agent Daniel Vartanian has sworn to find the perpetrator of multiple killings that mimic a 13-year-old murder linked to a collection of photographs that belonged to his brother, Simon, the ruthless serial killer who met his demise in Die for Me. Daniel is certain that someone even more depraved than his brother committed these crimes, and he's determined to bring the current murderer to justice and solve the mysterious crime from years ago.

With only a handful of images as a lead, Daniel's search will lead him back through the dark past of his own family, and into the realm of a mind more sinister than he could ever imagine. But his quest will also draw him to Alex Fallon, a beautiful nurse whose troubled past reflects his own. As Daniel becomes attached to Alex, he discovers that she is also the object of the obsessed murderer. Soon, he will not only be racing to discover the identity of this macabre criminal, but also to save the life of the woman he has begun to love.

My Thoughts: This romantic suspense title stars Alex Fallon who is an Emergency Room nurse. After the murder of her sister, her mother's suicide, and her own attempted overdose, Alex was taken away from Dutton, Georgia, to live with her mother's twin sister and her family in Ohio. She has buried her memories of that troubled time in her life which has cost her her marriage. Things are brought back to the surface when she is contacted by social services to take custody of a small child who is the daughter of her stepsister Bailey who is missing.

Agent Daniel Vartanian of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations is also a Dutton resident. He's back home after the deaths of his parents and his brother Simon who was a serial killer. Simon left some very troubling pictures behind. Daniel has a current string of murders that mirror the murder of Alex's sister to solve.

Alex and Daniel work together to solve the murders, find Bailey, and recover Alex's lost memories. Along the way they fall in love. This story is told from multiple viewpoints including that of the current killer and other local villains.

I enjoyed this story. I liked reading it better than listening to it. I found the narration of the audiobook difficult mainly because the narrator was not very good at the male voices which made it hard to separate who was talking in any scene. Also, the quick jumps from character to character and setting to setting also seemed to work better for me when I was reading rather than listening.

I bought the Kindle copy December 31, 2025, and audiobook on May 4, 2026. You can buy your copy here.

Audiobook Review: Smoke in Mirrors by Jayne Ann Krentz

Smoke in Mirrors

Author:
Jayne Ann Krentz
Narrator: Gina Marie Davies
Publication: Tantor Audio (December 27, 2022)
Length: 10 hours and 57 minutes

Description: A con artist and seductress, Meredith Spooner lived fast—and died young. But her final scam—embezzling more than a million dollars from a college endowment fund—is coming back to haunt Leonora Hutton. The tainted money is stashed away in an offshore account for Leonora. And while she wants nothing to do with the cash, she discovers two other items in the safe-deposit box: a book about Mirror House—the place where Meredith engineered her final deception and a set of newspaper stories about an unsolved murder that occurred there thirty years ago.

Now Leonora has an offer for Thomas Walker, another victim of Meredith's scams and seductions. She'll hand over the money—if he helps her figure out what's going on. Meredith had described Thomas as "a man you can trust." But in a funhouse-mirror world of illusion and distortion, Leonora may be out of her league . . .

My Thoughts: Leonora Hutton learns that her half-sister Meredith Spooner embezzled more than a million dollars from a college endowment fund before she died in a car accident and left it all, along with a book about Mirror House and some newspaper stories about a thirty-year-old suspicious death. Leonora doesn't want the money, but she has questions about the other things in the safe-deposit box.

She leaves her job as an academic librarian and takes a job digitizing the Mirror House library so that she can look into things. Thomas Walker also has questions about the embezzlement and about Leonora. The two team up to find the answers.

Thomas had a brief relationship with Meredith and now he's falling for Leonora but isn't sure if he can trust her. And Meredith's death isn't the first since the thirty-year-old mystery about the owner of Mirror House. Thomas's brother's wife was also the victim of an apparent suicide. Neither Thomas nor his brother believe that but have no evidence.

This was a classic romantic suspense title. Both Thomas and Leonora are independent adults with histories. They develop a great relationship after some initial suspicions about the other. The side characters including Leonora's grandmother provide interest and some humor. Thomas's dog Wrench - at least that's how I heard the name on the audio - also added a touch of humor. Though I'm not at all sure that the dog who looks like a wolf is really a miniature poodle in character.

This was a fun story.

I bought this one as an Audible Add-on December 3, 2025. You can buy your copy here.

Audiobook Review: The Shop on Hidden Lane by Jayne Ann Krentz

The Shop on Hidden Lane

Author:
Jayne Ann Krentz
Narrator: Eva Kaminsky
Publication: Recorded Books (January 6, 2026)
Length: 8 hours and 42 minutes

Description: New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz dives into an enthralling new romantic suspense novel filled with deeply entrenched grudges, psychic dangers, and a conspiracy that threatens not only two families but also the entire paranormal community.

The Harper and the Wells families have regarded each other with deep suspicion for four generations. The Harpers have been known to offer their psychic talents for less-than-legal purposes, and the powerful Wells clan has a reputation for playing both sides of the street. But for all the years of history and distrust between them, there is a mysterious pact binding the two. They share the responsibility for protecting a long-buried and very dangerous secret.

Sophy Harper and Luke Wells are shocked to learn that her aunt and his uncle have been sleeping together—and now they are both missing. Not only that, but the last traces of them are at the scene of a murder soaked in negative paranormal energy. Clearly, someone is willing to kill to obtain the secret their families have been charged with protecting. Despite their mutual distrust, which, as far as Sophy is concerned extends to Luke’s hellhound of a dog, they both know that the terms of the pact must be honored.

Their investigation uncovers a psychic trail leading to a bizarre desert art colony where nothing is as it seems. But Luke and Sophy are concealing a few secrets, too. By a strange twist of fate, a Harper and a Wells have no choice but to trust each other and the fierce attraction that is binding them as surely as the pact between the families.

My Thoughts: Sophy Harper and Luke Wells are the great-grandchildren of men who were once business partners, but who broke off their partnership and began a feud many years earlier. They are both psychics from psychic families who have taken different paths. The Harpers have traveled on the less-than-legal side of things while the Wells have become rich doing security and working all sides.

Luke comes to Sophy to see if she knows where her aunt and his uncle might be. Sophy finds it hard to believe that they could be together. They trace the couple to an art colony in Arizona known for its vortex energy and learn that his uncle has made reservations for them under an assumed name.

Arriving at the colony, the couple and Luke's new dog Bruce whom he rescued from the side of a road with a gunshot wound have lots of questions. The art seemed to be infused with psychic vibes, the artists are unhappy to be there, and the eccentric millionaire running the colony has two very scary, blond, female bodyguards who are raising alerts for both Sophy and Luke.

This was a twisty story that brings in elements from a lot of Krentz's recent books. Events at Fogg Lake, the Arcane Society, missing crystals and missing weapons that can only be used by someone with strong psychic talents all make for a complicated plot.

Then there is the relationship between Sophy and Luke. Her psychic powers don't frighten him. In fact, he helps her with the aftereffects of using her gift. And she helps him when he has issues with his psychic talents. Their gifts seem to resonate with each other in a way that is new to both of them.

This was a fun paranormal romance/romantic suspense story.

Audiobook Review: Hidden Riches by Nora Roberts

Hidden Riches

Author:
Nora Roberts
Narrator: Sandra Burr
Publication: Brilliance Audio (June 10, 2008)
Length: 14 hours and 23 minutes

Description #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts unveils the intriguing world of antiques dealing, where an independent woman discovers the price of breathless desire—and the schemes of an obsessed killer…

Dora Conroy has a passion for antiques—and any other rarities she can acquire for her quaint Philadelphia shop. A seasoned dealer, she knows all the tricks of the trade. But she is unprepared for the deadly consequences when she purchases a few curiosities at an auction—and unknowingly brings home a priceless cache that makes her the target of an international criminal. Entwined in a reckless chase, Dora turns to her new neighbor, Jed Skimmerhorn, a cop who’s turned in his badge—and whose desire for lovely Dora puts him back in the line of fire. Fighting their attraction while falling in love, they find that hidden riches can have a most ordinary façade. And that possession can be a lethal obsession…

My Thoughts: Dora Conroy has a new tenant for the apartment above her antiques and curiosities shop. Jed Skimmerhorm was a police captain who has given up his badge after he kills the man who, aiming for him, set a car bomb that murdered his sister. Independently wealthy, Jed is content to do nothing except exercise and stew in his guilt.

When Dora returns home from her buying trip, she meets the man her actor father chose for her new tenant. Banter ensues with Dora being friendly and Jed being grouchy.

Meanwhile, a wealthy, murderous and insane collector receives a package which doesn't contain the goods he purchased. He sends his henchman to find and recover his missing pieces which are the same goods Dora bought. He learns that the shipping company mislabeled the shipments and, starting at the auction house, beings to track them down killing anyone who gets in his way.

Dora's shop is burglarized but she and Jed manage to chase away the burglar after some shots are fired. Jed finds himself pulled back into police work as he tries to find out who tried to burglarize Dora's shop and why.

As the book progresses, the viewpoints alternate and the danger creeps ever closer to Dora. And Dora and Jed are falling love with Dora being the open-hearted one and Jed the more reluctant because his abuse childhood made him very suspicious of love.

The story was fast paced. It was also an intense thriller and intense though not graphic love story. I liked that Dora's family and Jed's friends were both pushing the couple together while providing strong support for both characters.

Published in 1994, the only things that made it seem dated were the lack of cellphones and the prevalence of characters who smoked. I enjoyed this one very much.

Audiobook Review: Red Lily by Nora Roberts

Red Lily

Author:
Nora Roberts
Narrator: Susie Breck
Series: In the Garden (Book 3)
Publication: Brilliance Audio (June 10, 2008)
Length: 10 hours and 34 minutes

Description: A Harper has always lived at Harper House, the centuries-old mansion just outside of Memphis. And for as long as anyone alive remembers, the ghostly Harper Bride has walked the halls, singing lullabies at night...

Hayley Phillips came to Memphis hoping for a new start, for herself and her unborn child. She wasn't looking for a handout from her distant cousin Roz, just a job at her thriving In the Garden nursery.

What she found was a home surrounded by beauty and the best friends she's ever had - including Roz's son Harper. To Hayley's delight, her new daughter Lily has really taken to him. But to Hayley's chagrin, she has begun to dream about Harper - as much more than a friend.

If Hayley gives in to her desire, she's afraid the foundation she's built with Harper will come tumbling down. Especially since she's begun to suspect that her feelings are no longer completely her own.<

Flashes of the past and erratic behavior make Hayley believe that the Harper Bride has found a way inside of her mind and body. It's time to put the Bride to rest once and for all, so Hayley can know her own heart again - and whether she's willing to risk it...

My Thoughts: The final novel in the In the Garden trilogy stars Hayley Phillips and Harper Ashby. Hayley had come to her distant cousin Roz when she found herself pregnant and shortly after the death of her father. She was looking for a new start and found it with family and by getting involved in the nursery business.

She fell in love with Roz's son Harper, but she was either pregnant or a new mother. Besides Harper doesn't seem interested in her. However, Harper had fallen in love with her too and was taking things slow until he felt Hayley had caught up with his feelings.

But, behind the scenes, the Harper Bride ghost is becoming more visible and more dangerous. She has graduated from singing to the Harper babies to threatening family members. And lately she has taken to taking over Hayley's body and wants to take over her life.

For a happy ending for Hayley and Harper, the people of Harper House - Roz and her new husband Mitch and Stella and her new husband Logan - need to discover what it is the ghost wants and how they can finally lay her to rest.

This was another great story. Roberts is an expert at relationships and especially friendships between women. She is also excellent at romances that are very realistic. This one certainly qualified.

Audiobook Review: Black Rose by Nora Roberts

Black Rose

Author:
Nora Roberts
Narrator: Susie Breck
Series: In the Garden (Book 2)
Publication: Brilliance Audio (June 10, 2008)
Length: 10 hours and 59 minutes

Description: A Harper has always lived at Harper House, the centuries-old mansion just outside of Memphis. And for as long as anyone alive remembers, the ghostly Harper Bride has walked the halls, singing lullabies at night.

At 45, Rosalind Harper is a woman whose experiences have made her strong enough to bend without breaking - and weather any storm. A widow with three grown sons, she survived a disastrous second marriage, and built her In the Garden nursery from the ground up.

Through the years, In the Garden has become more than just a thriving business - it is a symbol of hope and independence to Roz, and to the two women she shares it with. Newlywed Stella and new mother Hayley are the sisters of her heart, and together, the three of them are the future of In the Garden.

But now that future is under attack, and Roz knows they can't fight this battle alone. Hired to investigate Roz's Harper ancestors, Dr. Mitchell Carnegie finds himself just as intrigued with Roz herself. And as they begin to unravel the puzzle of the Harper Bride's identity, Roz is shocked to find herself falling for the fascinating genealogist.

Now it is a desperate race to discover the truth before the unpredictable apparition lashes out at the one woman who can help her rest in peace.

My Thoughts: The second book in the In the Garden trilogy is Rosalind's story. Roz has built a life for herself and her sons after being widowed when she was young. She has parlayed her talents and her funds into a successful gardening center. She works with her oldest son and two young protegees in widowed mother Stella and single mother Hailey.

When she was facing an empty nest as her son's moved off for their own careers, she entered into a marriage with a man who was a cheat and a liar. When she realized, she divorced him and thought that all she had to do was put her mistake in the past and promise herself never to make it again.

But when Dr. Mitchell Carnegie is hired to do a family genealogy and identify the Harper Bride who had been haunting the family for generations, Roz finds a man she can love and trust. But the ex hasn't finished with Roz. Between crashing her Christmas Party with his new woman, opening credit cards in her name, and resigning from her Country Club in her name having sent a nasty letter to the club, Roz has a lot to deal with.

Then there is the Harper Bride who has become more aggressive in the current situation. While still okay with the children, she is trying to interfere with all three women's new romantic relationships.

The Bride is identified in this one - not by name - by the role she had in a male Harper's life. She was a mistress whose baby was stolen from her to be passed off as the legitimate Harper heir. Taking her child drove her crazy and left her with a vendetta against the family.

I enjoyed this ghost story/romance. I love the depth of all the characters and the strong relationships between them.

Audiobook Review: Eclipse Bay by Jayne Ann Krentz

Eclipse Bay

Author:
Jayne Ann Krentz
Narrator: Gail Shalan
Series: Eclipse Bay (Book 1)
Publication: Tantor Media (June 13, 2023)
Length: 8 hours and 47 minutes

Description: FIRST IN THE STUNNING TRILOGY

Eclipse Bay has grown and flourished amongst the sharp cliffs and hidden coves of the rugged Oregon coast. But this small town is also filled with secrets as treacherous as the landscape and rivalries as fierce as an ocean storm.

Their grandfathers hated each other. Their fathers hated each other. But they don't hate each other. Not at all . . .

Hannah Harte remembers the long-ago night on the beach that revealed Rafe as more than just "that disreputable Madison boy." And Rafe remembers the heroic gesture that proved Hannah's fierce spirit was stronger than any feud—and saved him from near-certain imprisonment.

Now—reunited by a surprising inheritance after years of living their separate lives—Rafe and Hannah return to Eclipse Bay, and the hostilities that still divide, and bind, their families. And they are discovering something that is at once delightful and deeply disturbing . . .

My Thoughts: ECLIPSE BAY begins a romance trilogy set in coastal Oregon. The Harte and Madison families are bitter rivals. A business deal gone wrong in their grandfathers' time has built quite a feud by the time Hannah Harte meets Rafe Madison on the beach.  Both had been abandoned by their dates to long walks home. The two spend most of the night talking and getting to know one another. The next day, when Rafe's date is found dead, Hannah is the one who provides his alibi for the murder wrecking er own reputation along the way.

The two go their separate ways after that. Hannah becomes a successful wedding planner and Rafe, whose past is more mysterious, becomes a chef. Their paths collide again when Hannah's great aunt leaves her mansion to both of them.

Reunited in Eclipse Bay, both learn that the feelings they had for each other years earlier have not gone away. That doesn't mean that they don't have arguments about the fate of their inheritance. Both want to open an inn, and Rafe wants to add on a restaurant, but they don't want to work with each other.  And that long ago death is still haunting them especially since the victim's brother is sure that Rafe caused his sister's death.

They decide to look into her death together to see if they can learn what really happened eight years earlier and begin to uncover a number of secrets that someone wants to remain buried.

This was an engaging romance with a bit of suspense. I liked the way each of the main characters was developed. The banter between them was also entertaining.

ARC Review: Family Lies by Karen Rose

Family Lies

Author:
Karen Rose
Series: The San Diego Case Files (Book 4)
Publication: Berkley (March 31, 2026)

Description: The fourth nerve-shattering installment of the San Diego Case Files from New York Times bestselling author Karen Rose sees Kit McKittrick’s sister caught in a maelstrom of deadly family secrets.

As an infant, Kit McKittrick’s foster sister Akiko was abandoned at a firehouse. Now 32, Akiko has received an unsettling phone call from a woman who says that she knew her birth mother but refuses to divulge any details except in person. Akiko is nervous but also thrilled at the prospect of finally learning about her blood relations.

Kit has a bad feeling about this and insists on accompanying Akiko to meet the woman. Sure enough, as they stand on Mary Sherman’s doorstep, shots are fired and Kit is hit...and inside the house is a corpse: Mary Sherman herself.

Although she’s on medical leave and forbidden to work the case, Kit cannot rest. With police psychologist Sam Reeves, she undertakes a covert investigation into the mysterious Mary Sherman. Was she Akiko’s birth mother? Why did she reach out after all these years? And who had a motive to kill her?

As more bodies pile up, Kit starts to put together the pieces of the frightening puzzle that is Akiko’s birth family, and she’ll come to wonder whether some secrets should stay buried after all.

My Thoughts: The fourth book in the San Diego Case Files is centered around Akiko McKittrick. Detective Kit McKittrick goes with her adopted sister Akiko when she receives a call from a woman who says she knows something about her mother. Since Akiko was left in a box outside a firehouse when she was only a couple of days old, she wants to know about her mother.

When Akiko, Kit and Kit's boyfriend psychologist Sam Reeves, arrive at Mary Sherman's house, they are shot at. Kit is hit in the arm but only because she bent her head to look at something which caused the shooter to miss the head shot. They go into the house to find that Mary Sherman has been murdered.

Kit is determined to find answers for her sister but is surprised when her lieutenant takes her off the case in favor of another pair of detectives one of whom really hates Kit. The lieutenant tells her to stop investigating and puts her on medical leave. But it's Kit's sister. She can't step aside especially since she knows one of the investigator's assigned to the case is incompetent.

Kit keeps investigating and soon finds herself suspended from her job which just adds additional stress to her life. Choosing between her job and her sister is a no-brainer though. Kit will always put family first no matter how much she loves her job.

Kit, Sam and Kit's retired partner Baz keep investigating and trying to uncover the events that led to Akiko's abandonment as an infant. They discover a tangled and twisty past for Akiko's relatives and face all sorts of dangers along the way including another couple of deaths and more attacks on Kit.

This was an excellent thriller filled with engaging characters. I enjoyed Kit's tentative steps into love and letting someone else into her life.

Audiobook Review: Untouchable by Jayne Ann Krentz

Untouchable

Author:
Jayne Ann Krentz
Narrator: Amanda Leigh Cobb
Series: Sons of Anson Salinas (Book 3)
Publication: Recorded Books (January 8, 2019)
Length: 8 hours and 40 minutes

Description: A man's quest to find answers for those who are haunted by the past leads him deeper into the shadows in this electrifying novel from The New York Times best-selling author of Promise Not to Tell.

Quinton Zane is back.

Jack Lancaster, consultant to the FBI, has always been drawn to the coldest of cold cases, the kind that law enforcement either considers unsolvable or else has chalked up to accidents or suicides. As a survivor of a fire, he finds himself uniquely compelled by arson cases. His almost preternatural ability to get inside the killer's head has garnered him a reputation in some circles - and complicated his personal life. The more cases Jack solves, the closer he slips into the darkness. His only solace is Winter Meadows, a meditation therapist. After particularly grisly cases, Winter can lead Jack back to peace.

But as long as Quinton Zane is alive, Jack will not be at peace for long. Having solidified his position as the power behind the throne of his biological family's hedge fund, Zane sets out to get rid of Anson Salinas's foster sons, starting with Jack.

My Thoughts: The main characters of this finale to the Sons of Anson Salinas trilogy are Winter Meadows and Jack Lancaster. Jack has been a consultant to the FBI and an author. He is drawn to investigating cold cases especially those dealing with fire. He is also a lucid dreamer.

Winter Meadows is a skilled hypnotist who has been hired to held Jack deal with his nightmares. She has attracted a stalker.

Winter and Jack team up to defeat the stalker who has some links to Jack's old enemy Quinton Zane. Zane has decided to return to the United States but needs to get rid of Jack, his brothers, and their foster father before he can feel safe. Encouraging Winter's stalker is the start of his campaign.

Zane has also hired a couple of mercenaries to assist with his plans. They have their own agenda but killing Winter and Jack will fit in.

This was an engaging romance with some nice suspense. A character who appears in some of Krentz's other stories - Arizona Snow - makes an appearance in this one. Jack's psychic abilities and Winter's too are traits often seen in the author's books.

This was a nice conclusion to the trilogy.

Audiobook Review: Promise Not to Tell by Jayne Ann Krentz

Promise Not to Tell

Author:
Jayne Ann Krentz
Narrator: Susan Bennett
Series: Sons of Anson Salinas (Book 2)
Publication: Recorded Books (January 2, 2018)
Length: 10 hours and 40 minutes

Description: A broken promise reveals a terrifying legacy in this electrifying novel from the New York Times best-selling author of When All the Girls Have Gone.

Seattle gallery owner Virginia Troy has spent years battling the demons that stem from her childhood time in a cult and the night a fire burned through the compound, killing her mother. And now one of her artists has taken her own life, but not before sending Virginia a last picture: a painting that makes Virginia doubt everything about the so-called suicide - and her own past.

Like Virginia, PI Cabot Sutter was one of the children in the cult who survived that fire - and only he can help her now. As they struggle to unravel the clues in the picture, it becomes clear that someone thinks Virginia knows more than she does and that she must be stopped. Thrown into an inferno of desire and deception, Virginia and Cabot draw ever closer to the mystery of their shared memories - and the shocking fate of the one man who still wields the power to destroy everything they hold dear.

My Thoughts: PROMISE NOT TO TELL is the middle book in the Sons of Anson Salinas trilogy. Seattle gallery owner Virginia Troy needs a private detective to look into the death of one of her artists. The local police have called it suicide, but Virginia has her doubts.

Virginia goes to Cabot Sutter to investigate. Both Virgina and Cabot were raised in a cult and nearly lost their lives when a fire was set outside the locked barn where the children were sleeping. The cult leader set the fire and escaped. Virginia was raised by her grandmother and Cabot was raised by Anson Salinas, the police officer who rescued the children in the barn.

Cabot, Anson, and Cabot's two adopted brothers have long believed that the cult leader got away despite his proclaimed death when a boat he had stolen exploded in the ocean. Virginia's artist is also a survivor of the cult and worked out her nightmares in a series of paintings. Her last painting seems to show the cult leader in modern dress which convinces Cabot that he is still alive.

Besides the hunt to discover if the cult leader is still alive, Cabot is also dealing with family issues. The grandfather who never acknowledged him has died and has left Cabot something in his will. A lawyer is being very persistent about wanting Cabot to sign a paper which will give him a $25 thousand inheritance. He could use the money, but something just doesn't seem right about the lawyer's need for a speedy resolution to the settlement.

Virginia and Cabot also learn that there might be some money involved in the cult too. They learn that some of the women including both of their mothers found a way to divert funds into a secret account. Now someone who might or might not be the cult leader wants the money and believes that Virginia has the key to locating it.

This was an entertaining story. I liked the relationship between Cabot and Virginia who are both still dealing with the trauma of being in a cult and almost dying while trying to escape it. This was a nice romance and a nice mystery too.

Audiobook Review: When All the Girls Have Gone by Jayne Ann Krentz

When All the Girls Have Gone

Author:
Jayne Ann Krentz
Narrator: Amanda Leigh Cobb
Series: Sons of Anson Salinas (Book 1)
Publication: Recorded Books (November 29, 2016)
Length: 10 hours and 26 minutes

Description: When Charlotte Sawyer is unable to contact her step-sister, Jocelyn, to tell her that one her closest friends was found dead, she discovers that Jocelyn has vanished.

Beautiful, brilliant - and reckless - Jocelyn has gone off the grid before, but never like this. In a desperate effort to find her, Charlotte joins forces with Max Cutler, a struggling PI who recently moved to Seattle after his previous career as a criminal profiler went down in flames - literally. Burned out, divorced and almost broke, Max needs the job.

After surviving a near-fatal attack, Charlotte and Max turn to Jocelyn's closest friends, women in a Seattle-based online investment club, for answers. But what they find is chilling. When her uneasy alliance with Max turns into a full-blown affair, Charlotte has no choice but to trust him with her life. For the shadows of Jocelyn's past are threatening to consume her - and anyone else who gets in their way.

My Thoughts: WHEN ALL THE GIRLS HAVE GONE pairs a struggling PI named Max Cutler and a woman who works in a retirement community. They meet when Charlotte picks up her vacationing stepsister Jocelyn's mail and finds a note from her sister's best friend and fellow member of their investment club. When Charlotte tries to contact the friend, she learns that she has died, the apparent victim of a drug overdose. Charlotte decides to go to the friend's - Louise's - home to pick up some papers that she wanted Jocelyn to have.

Max Cutler has been hired by Louise's cousin who doesn't believe that his cousin was using drugs. Max has relocated to the West Coast after some issues with his previous job as a profiler. He is obsessed with trying to find a villain from his childhood. His mother got involved in a cult and, when the cult fell apart, the leader set off a series of explosions. His mother died but he and eight other children were rescued by a local police officer. Most of the kids were reunited with relatives but Max and two other boys were orphans. They were raised by the cop who became their foster father. The question of what became of the cult leader has haunted Max ever since.

When Charlotte and Max try to contact her sister Jocelyn, they learn that she is not where she said she would be. Max and Charlotte partner up to try to find her. Meanwhile, the other members of their investment club are also receiving threats. Max and Charlotte also find themselves barely surviving an attempted murder.

I enjoyed this story. I liked that both Max and Charlotte had similar characters. Neither is looking for a new relationship but something just clicks when they meet. She has an unwavering faith in him and an innate understanding of him. He also feels comfortable sharing things about his past with her that he hasn't shared before.

This is a great story with a couple of nice twists along the way.

Audiobook Review: The Reckless Bride by Stephanie Laurens

The Reckless Bride

Author:
Stephanie Laurens
Narrator: Simon Prebble
Series: The Black Cobra Quartet (Book 4)
Publication: HarperAudio (October 26, 2010)
Length: 14 hours and 54 minutes

Description: The fourth book in New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Stephanie Laurens’s sensational Black Cobra Quartet, The Reckless Bride is a brilliant mix of intrigue, danger, and historical romance from one of the very best in the business. A breathtaking adventure set in England’s Regency Era, The Reckless Bride continues the acclaimed romance novelist’s extraordinary chronicle of love and duty, as brave ex-officers of the Crown band together to destroy the traitorous fiend known as The Black Cobra.

My Thoughts: This book is the conclusion of the Black Cobra Quartet. Rafe Carstairs is the one who has the original of the letter that will bring the Black Cobra to justice. He and his companion have decided to travel overland from India to England in the hopes of outwitting the Black Cobra's minions.

In Buda, the come upon Lady Congreve who has been beset by criminals. They rescue her and she invites them to travel with her party as guide and guard as they travel rivers to get back to England. In her party is her grand-niece Miss Loretta Michelmarsh. He takes one look at the beauty and wonders just what he has gotten himself into.

Meanwhile, Loretta has been dragooned to travel with her aunt after turning down her eighth proposal of marriage. Loretta has been hiding herself behind a meek and mild personality and therefore attracting men who are drawn to that sort of woman. But the men bore her silly. She has a hidden identity of a correspondent for a newspaper and is using her trip to send back vignettes of European travel. She is dismayed and surprised by her attraction to Rafe.

As they travel along the river and sightsee at the various stops, they are beset by criminals. Rafe immediately assumes that these are hirelings of the Black Cobra despite the fact that they are not Indian and are not wearing the distinctive black headgear of the gang.

As they travel, Rafe and Loretta become closer despite each's determination to stay away from the other. The fires burn hot and love scenes ensue. I will have to say that I found the lengthy love scenes just a little bit boring and wanted a return to the action of the story.

They do eventually arrive in England and find their way to the rendezvous point. This time they are really in danger from the Black Cobra's minions. I enjoyed the scenes where the Black Cobra was exposed and captured. I also liked the updates on the other couples from the earlier three books.
