2011 Read Your Own Books Challenge

I thought I was finished with signing up for challenges for this year. I couldn't resist signing up for just one more. Jamie from Jamie's Bookshelf is hosting the 2011 Read Your Own Books Challenge. Here are the rules:

  1. Please create a post for the challenge...In the comments below please include the link to your challenge post (NOT your blog homepage.)
  2. As long as the book(s) you are reading are books that you CURRENTLY own they count towards this years challenge.
  3. The object is to read as many of your own books, regardless of format, as possible by the end of the year.
  4. Challenge goes from February 17, 2011 - December 31, 2011.

This one should be easy for me. I have 960 books on my shelf and on my Kindle that qualify for this challenge. I am also currently in a book buying ban until I can get some of my massive TBR stack read.

Wish me luck. You can see my progress on all my 2011 challenges here.

2011 Read Me Baby, 1 More Time Challenge

I swear this is the last challenge I'm signing up for in 2011 (unless something really good comes along ;-)).

The 2011 Read Me Baby, 1 More Time Challenge is hosted by Kate at Midnight Book Girl.

Here are the rules:
Read Me Baby, 1 More Time is for those of you who love to re-read your favorite books or those of you who want to re-visit a book from your past.  The rules are simple, for a book to qualify you simply have to have read it at least once before, and the re-read has to be complete.  For instance, there are some books I re-read from cover to cover, and there are other books that I just read certain scenes from when I need a little comfort-before-bed reading.  Just reading a few scenes doesn't count for this challenge.

Here's the tiers for you to choose from:

Trip Down Memory Lane: 1-3 re-reads
Reliving the Past: 4-8 re-reads
Back To The Future: 9-12 re-read
Groundhog Day Reader: 13-20 re-reads
I love to re-read. I don't think year goes by that I don't re-read the Vorkosigan series by Lois McMaster Bujold or the Liaden series by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. There are also a number of other books that I would like to read again this year. I'm signing up to be a Groundhog Day Reader.

2011 Show Me the FREE Challenge

I have decided to take part in the 2011 Show Me the Free Challenge at The Unread Reader. I love my Kindle and I really love getting free books for it. I currently have 150 tagged "free" in my LibraryThing account and haven't added the new books I downloaded just today. Now, I need a push to actually read the free books I download instead of saving them all for "someday."

My goal is to read twelve of them this coming year. That puts me at the Coupon Clipper level for this challenge. There will also be opportunities to link reviews and win prizes. You can find out all about this challenge here and sign-up for it here.

If you have an ereader, why don't you join me?

Out With a Bang Readathon Wrap Up & Giveaway

I started strong on the challenge but day 3 was my undoing. After reading two books each on days one and two, I was confident going into day 3. However, I ran into a book that I just couldn't get into. Here are the books I finished.

Along with doing a lot of end of year blog posts, updating challenge progress bars, signing up for still more challenges and general time wasting, I did manage to read Queen of Shadows by Dianne Sylvan. Since I finished it after midnight, I'm counting it as my first book of 2011. I read 300 pages of it on Dec. 31 and the final 100 after midnight.

Does anyone want a copy of the ARC of The Anatomy of Ghosts by Andrew Taylor? The writing style reminds me of classic literature which is definitely not my thing. Click on the title to read about the book at Amazon. If you would like it, leave your email address in the comments and I'll draw a winner using Random.org (or maybe slips of paper in a hat) later this week. I'll ship this heavy ARC to the US or Canada.

I read a total of 1742 pages during the readathon and 4 3/4 books. I didn't participate in any of the mini-challenges this time. I just concentrated on reading and getting my blogs ready for 2011.

2011 Paranormal Romance Challenge

I just can't seem to say "no." I decided, after looking at my TBR stack, to add this challenge to my list for 2011. I love paranormal romances. Could anything be more romantic than a relationship with a dark, mysterious werewolf or vampire? I don't think so!

This challenge is being hosted at Bitten by Paranormal Romance.
This is a challenge to read 20 paranormal romance book between Jan 1st through Dec 31st. Any books read before Jan will not count.

You can pick any *adult paranormal romance book as you go, new release or old release it doest matter. But remember this is only for paranormal romance. NO urban fantasy, YA or paranormal erotica. If you have any questions please email me or leave a comment.

*It doesn't matter if the book is vampire, witch, any shape-shifting, Greek gods, zombies or faeries just as long as it adult paranormal romance. Most book will tell you on the side cover if its paranormal romance, that's what you want to get to read.
And some further instructions:
Read it and write a review on your blog and come back and post the review in the Mister linky. I will have a mister linky for each month so don't worry.

During each month there will be one winner that is picked to win a prize. Your reviews will not be judged in this for prizes. After each month I will used random.org or draw a name, out of those that have their reviews done for that month. Your name will be entered for each review. So if you do two you will be entered to win twice.
This one sounds like fun. Why don't you join me?

2011 Horror & Urban Fantasy Reading Challenge

I first thought to pass up this challenge. I don't read horror! There is enough horror to be found on the television news or in the newspaper. But I saw a list of upcoming urban fantasy books and noted that I planned to read quite a few of them. This one will definitely be tipped to the urban fantasy side for me.

The goal is to read 24 books in this category. I have a few in mind and on pre-order already and am sure that there are more languishing on my TBR mountain that will qualify.

You can find out all the details here at Book Chick City. Why don't you join me and the 109 other people who have already signed up?

2011 Shifter Challenge

I have decided to sign up for still another challenge. Parajunkie is hosting the 2011 Shifter Challenge. I love shifter books. I have tons on my Kindle that I haven't had a chance to read yet. This challenge was made for me.

Here are the rules from Parajunkie's site:

  1. Post about this challenge on your blog stating that you are participating. That post is the link that you will include in the Mr. Linky below. The link should be the post link not just your blog link.
  2. Grab the button and display it in the post (use grab code underneath the button) or on your sidebar so others can join in the fun.
  3. Challenge goes from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2011
  4. The challenge is to read 20 books that have a SHIFTER as a MAIN character, either protag or antagonist
  5. There will be a post that goes up for January 1 where you add each book as you read them and discuss books read in the comments

This one sounds like a bunch of fun. Bring on the werewolves and cougar shifters and lion shifters and any other kind of shifter.

2011 Romance Reading Challenge

I know I said that I wasn't going to participate in so many challenges in 2011 but....

I just couldn't pass up the 2011 Romance Reading Challenge hosted by Nitty Gritty - Romance and Erotica Reviews. I like to add in a few romance books for variety in my reading and now I will have an additional reason to do so. I spent a lot of my 20s immersed in the various Harlequin and Silhouette lines of romances. Some authors I still read today - Jayne Ann Krentz, Elizabeth Lowell, and Eileen Wilks - cut their writing teeth there. I don't think it will be hard to read 12 books in this genre next year.

You can find out all the details and requirements by reading this post. If you like a good romance, come join us. Check my sidebar for a button that leads to the sign-up post.

2011 Mystery and Suspense Challenge

Even though I said that I wasn't going to sign up for any challenges this next year, I have decided to take part in Mystery and Suspense Challenge 2011 hosted at Book Chick City. I like to read in this genre and think it will be easy to complete 12 books through the course of 2011. Check out this post to join in the challenge and find out all the rules.

I have no idea what I will be reading yet. I know that I have at least twelve books that will qualify already on my massive TBR stack.

An additional incentive for anyone who is thinking of joining is that you will receive an ARC of The Survivor by Sean Slater courtesy of Simon & Schuster for joining the challenge. You will have a chance at monthly prizes too.

This one sounds like a lot of fun and a chance to clear some mystery and suspense books off my TBR stack.

2011 Futuristic/SF Challenge

As this year winds to an end, I have been thinking about challenges for 2011. At first, I was determined not to sign up for any challenges. I wanted to be free to read by impulse and mood and not feel that I had to read something to add to a certain challenge that I had committed to. But, when I saw this challenge, I was very interested in it. This year I read some books in this category and didn't have a challenge that they would fit in.

I am going to be participating in the 2011 Futuristic/SF Challenge hosted by Tasha at Book Obsessed. I am going for the Dweller level and planning to read at least 12 futuristic or science fiction books.

Here is what Tasha says about her challenge:
The goal of this challenge is to read novels that take place in the future or on an alternate planet. Your books can be of any format (ie. paperback, ebook, audiobook, etc.). No short stories. Re-reads and crossovers from other reading challenges are fine. You can list your books in advance or list them as you read them.
This might give me a chance to go through my TBR mountain and pull out some of the science fiction that I seem to have been stockpiling for just such a challenge.

RYOB Challenge 2010

I have decided to participate in another challenge for 2010. I will be doing the RYOB (Read Your Own Books) Challenge which is hosted by MizB

Here are the rules:

For 2010, I am planning to continue with the RYOB (Read Your Own Books) challenge! The rules are simple:
  • Pick a number of books you’d like to read in one year (about 100 for me)
  • Choose those books from your OWN collection
  • Read them between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010
And, that’s it!

Some other guidelines for this challenge:

  • Re-Reads are NOT allowed (the challenge is to get more of your own books read that have been sitting there waiting!)
  • Audiobooks & e-books ARE allowed
  • You do NOT need a blog to participate — you can leave comments on this post with your progress

Click on the name after Jan. 1, 2010 to go to the page for Mr. Linky. I have also put a button for the challenge in my sidebar.

This challenge dovetails nicely with my TBR Challenge (also hosted by MizB) and the 2010 E Book Challenge (hosted by Royal Reviews). I will be updating this post with the titles of the books I read for this challenge.
