It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (June 10, 2013)

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.  It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

On the personal front, I had a very interesting week. Suffering from chest pains took me to the ER where they determined that I wasn't having a heart attack and everything looked OK with my heart and lungs. They sent me on to my own doctor with a prescription for oxycodone to manage the pain. When I finally saw her -- five days later -- I had a full-blown case of Shingles. This came as a surprise to me since I had the vaccine at my annual physical in December 2011. But, after some discussion and looking at the risk factors, I could understand why I got them. I hit on three of the four risk factors! Lucky me.

So my summer vacation began early. I missed the last student day, went in to finish reports and stuff on the first workday taking care to stay away from any of our multitude of pregnant teachers, and will miss the last two workdays today and Tuesday.

I came home so that my brother can take care of me. My rash is itchy and totally inaccessible to me. There is no way I can contort to spray calamine location between my own shoulder blades. Luckily I was sent home with two medications that should clear this thing up. Meanwhile, I am aching and itchy and sleep deprived. I keep nodding off when trying to read.

I did finish four books this week.
I read Whiskey Beach by Nora Roberts and really enjoyed this romantic suspense title. Nora Roberts never disappoints me. My review will be posted on June 13.

I also chose Full Blooded by Amanda Carlson from my TBR mountain. This debut novel read like one. There was some stilted dialog and some occasions of the author telling rather than showing that could have been done better. I did enjoy the story and the world. The cliffhanger ending means I have to read book 2 (now downloaded on my Kindle.) My review will be posted on June 15.
I read the eARC of The Pirate's Wish by Cassandra Rose Clarke and enjoyed this second book in a fantasy series. This one has great characters and tons of adventure. My review will be posted on June 13.

I chose The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson from my TBR mountain because I have been curious about this mystery. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading the sequel. My review will be posted on June 15.

Currently:
I am currently reading the eARC of Ink (Paper Gods) by Amanda Sun which sees a grief stricken Katie moved to Japan to live with an aunt she barely knows stumble into something magical. I am liking it so far.

Next Week:
There are two more YA review books in my plans for next week. Beautifully Broken by Sherry Soule is the first book in the author's Spellbound series. It was released June 26, 2011.

Neptune's Tears by Susan Waggoner is a futuristic paranormal that I got from Macmillan. It will be released on June 25.
My adult choices this week are two books by favorite authors that I have been wanting to read for ages. Since they were just released, I had to wait.

Gameboard of the Gods by Richelle Mead is the first in a new series.

Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh is the twelfth book in her Psy-Changeling series.

I am hoping to read a couple more books this week but haven't decided what they will be. I brought home two grocery sacks of books from my TBR mountain -- one adult books and one YA books -- so that I have lots of choices.

What are your plans for the week?

  5. I hope you feel better, and that the itching will just stop! Interesting week, indeed... I hope this week will be a little less interesting - at least health-wise!

I have Heart of Obsidian on my list for this week as well - I can't wait to dive into that :) I need to check out several of the ones you read last week, and I really look forward to INK as well.

  6. Oh, I'm so sorry you have to go through that. Shingles is not fun! Get plenty of rest and I hope you feel better soon. Thank goodness for our love of books to help pull us through rough spells.

  7. I can sympathize. I had shingles a couple of years ago. They started ed in my ear. It was one of the times I was thankful me right side was partially paralyzed because the pain was numbed just a bit due to that. Take care and don't overdo because even after the rash starts to fade your body will still need rest.

Perfect excuse for curling up with good books :)

  13. So sorry to hear about the shingles, and it sounds like getting a diagnosis was quite an ordeal. Hope you're feeling better soon! Thanks for visiting my blog. I'm interested in reading Richelle Mead's new book, and the cover for Ink is so gorgeous I need to check it out. Maybe I'll enjoy Cassandra Rose Clarke's fantasy series more than Mad Scientist's Daughter.
