It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (July 13, 2020)

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.  It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

I will be combining my YA and adult reading and purchases on this one weekly roundup.

Other Than Reading...

We had a hot week here in Duluth and we finally got a little rain. We had a couple of nights with thunderstorms that left 2 1/2 inches of rain behind. We are still about 4 inches below normal for the year but things don't look quite as dry.

It looks like the Covid numbers are rising here in Minnesota again after a few weeks of lowering numbers. I'm still trying to stay home as much as possible. The latest confusion here concerns the start of the next school year. Schools have to plan for 3 options: in-person, online, or some hybrid. I am so glad that I'm retired and don't need to deal with any of it. I've been following some of my teacher friends on Facebook as they talk about this. It gets even harder when they are parents of kids in schools where they don't teach. One friend has to be concerned with the schedules for three different school systems for herself and her three children.

I am looking forward to being able to watch some baseball on TV in a couple of weeks. I wonder how it will go for them. Last I heard, there won't be fans in the seats and some players have opted out due to Covid concerns. At least, it will give me an excuse other than Food Network for turning on my television.

Read Last Week

If you can't wait until the review shows up on my blog, reviews are posted to LibraryThing and Goodreads as soon as I write them (usually right after I finish reading a book.)
  • Paris Is Always a Good Idea by Jenn McKinlay (Review; July 21) - Funny and touching contemporary romance about a workaholic who is thrown for a loop when her widowed father announces his plan to remarry. My review will be posted on July 18.
  • A Royal Affair by Allison Montclair (Review; July 28) - Second Sparks and Bainbridge mystery has them vetting Prince Phillip before his proposal to Princess Elizabeth. My review will be posted on July 23.
  • Mr. Malcolm's List by Suzanne Allain (Review; July 28) - Entertaining historical romance with witty dialog and interesting characters. My review will be posted on July 25.
  • The Honor of the Queen by David Weber (Audiobook) - Honor is part of a diplomatic mission to Grayson when Grayson's enemies (secretly supported by the Republic of Haven) attack. She helps defend Grayson from the attacks but makes enemies with some of her own people who want something different. My review will be posted on October 14.
  • The Short Victorious War by David Weber (Audiobook) - In order to deflect attention at home to a failing economy, Haven decides to start a "short victorious war" against Manticore. But they have to get through Honor to be a success and she is a very strong opponent. My review will be posted on October 21.
  • Field of Dishonor by David Weber (Audiobook) - Takes place on Manticore and mainly concerns Honor's conflicts with Captain Lord Pavel Young starting with his court martial and the politics surrounding it. Honor has to play out of her depth since so much of the story concerns political infighting. My review will be posted on October 28.
  • Flag in Exile by David Weber (Audiobook) - This episode takes place mainly on Grayson and deals with Honor learning about her new job as a Steadholder and being asked to join the Grayson Navy. She has to deal with a growing threat from Haven and secret attempts to hamper her success on Grayson. My review will be posted on November 4.

  1. I am also glad to be retired and with grown kids, not having to deal with the school issue. My youngest grandson is still in high school, but I think he would be happy to finish online.

Enjoy your books and stay safe.

  2. I'm still teaching, but in an alternative provision/ hospital school, so it's much more one to one. I'm still not sure if things will be back to "normal" in September or not.
    Happy reading!

  3. I really thought I would watch at least a little more TV, but I haven't watched much of anything. I've been reading more, but not much TV. Food Network sometimes and occasionally HGTV, but only true crime when my husband has it on right before bedtime.

We didn't have much rain in NC last week, but we had plenty in MA. We are expecting thunderstorms this afternoon.

A Royal Affair and Mr. Malcolm's List sound good. I hope you enjoy all you books.

  4. Paris Is Always a Good Idea sounds like the perfect feel-good novel to read this summer. I'm adding it to my TBR pile. Enjoy your reading week!

  5. We're staying home too ... our numbers had been low but now they're climbing. I have the Paris book on my list, I hope I get to it.

  6. I'm glad to be retired too. I don't have to worry about going to work and I can just stay home. I'm, also, a baseball fan and miss it. Several players have tested positive for COVID-19 so I wonder if the season will go off at all. If they do, I'll be watching.

    Have a great week!

  7. I'm very glad I don't have children. Seeing my teacher friends discuss it on FB is stressful enough! My aunt is a teacher's assistant and she's debating whether she even wants to continue in that role. What a mess! Enjoy your week!

  8. I have two rugrats and everything is up in the air as far as school here. We're thinking it's going to be a hybrid, but we'll have to see. Hope you have a great week!

  9. Things are out of control here in Florida, so we're pretty much always at home. I'm wondering if baseball will happen... it sure will be nice to have something on other than news! Paris is Always a Good Idea sounds like fun. Will look for your review. Have a good week.

  11. I feel so bad for the teachers, they're in such a tough position. You shouldn't have to fear for your life to go to work! Plus the kids too. I hope it all works out, and I'm anxious too to see how our district responds.

We're staying home as much as possible too.

PAris Is Always A Good Idea sounds fun!

  12. Nice variety of books! I would love to be retired, but that's not in the cards right now. I'm a public librarian and don't have kids in school anymore, but our daughter is a teacher in New York and it sounds like the same situation as Minnesota.

  13. Yeah, the world is seems like it doesn't know if it wants to get better or worse. Seems like you had a good reading week! Thanks for stopping by! Happy reading!

  14. I'm very jealous of your rain. Summer is fully set into Texas, so we are having days of 100 degrees and above. My poor grass and flowerbeds are requiring more frequent watering that ever before.

On the reading front this week, I have been focussed on horror as a genre. I'm hoping to change things to Emma Donoghue's latest historical fiction after I finish my current read.

  15. I do so like the list of books especially the "royal" lot. Am going to check out whether any of them available. I hope you are safe. Numbers here sadly began to rise after weeks of just one or two.

  16. Yes so hard for schools in the USA and I have sympathy for the teachers. I am happy to be retired too, although Covid is not prevalent here at present. Yes take care, stay home!

  17. It’s good to hear baseball is starting up, my husband has been watching football here and it is so strange watching them play in empty stadiums.

Have a lovely week and stay safe.

  18. I think Firefox ate my first comment.
I agree that it is difficult preparing for school in these circumstances.
You have me eyeing David Weber esp since I have book 1 on my Audible TBR shelf.
Have a good week and Happy Reading!

  19. I'm glad I am retired. I see my friends on Facebook who are bewildered about returning to the classroom. I see parents uncertain about sending their children. A mess.

I want to read Paris is Always a Good Idea. Thanks for sharing a few of your thoughts. I look forward to your full review.

    Have a good week.

  20. I'm impressed at how many audiobooks you got through. Aren't they really long? I'm currently listening to the most recent (last?) Honor book, but at this rate you will finish before I do.
