ARC Review: Midnight in the House of Commons by Charles Finch

Midnight in the House of Commons

Author:
Charles Finch
Series: Charles Lenox Mysteries (Book 16)
Publication: Minotaur Books (November 3, 2026)

Description: Amateur sleuth Charles Lenox investigates the murder of a Parliament member, moving through the glamorous high society of Victorian London in the next novel from acclaimed author Charles Finch.

In the spring of 1881, Lenox is caught up in the whirl of London life when his brother arrives to tell him that there’s been a murder in the House of Commons. Robert Baddeley, a charismatic, womanizing Member, has been found poisoned in the hallowed chamber itself. Suspicion immediately falls on the women in his life, including his wife and mistress, but as Lenox digs deeper, he realizes that there were more than a few people who might have wanted Baddeley dead.

Meanwhile, Lenox must balance his investigation with his family life, which has grown increasingly complicated: his ward Sari struggles with heartbreak, the Lenox household receives an odd visitor, and a young woman comes to Lenox to implore him to find her fiancé, who has mysteriously vanished.

And just when Lenox is nearing the truth of Baddeley’s murder, someone close to him is arrested for the crime―and Lenox must race to solve the case before losing everything.

Joyfully set in ballrooms, supper parties, palaces, and Parliament Midnight in the House of Commons takes Charles Lenox through his trickiest, most satisfying case yet.

My Thoughts: The sixteenth Charles Lenox mystery has as its centerpiece the murder of a Member of the House of Commons on the floor of the House. A single earring, a note, and an unplanned supper are the clues that Charles has to follow.

Robert Baddeley was a charming womanizer with surprising influence in the House despite his relatively short tenure there. The first suspects that come to mind are the women in his life. He has a wife and a series of lovers. But there might also be a political motive for his death. The vote on the Poor Bill is coming up, and it looks like the more progressive party of which Charles' brother Edmund is a shining light is going to fall short of success by one vote. Baddeley's death would give Edmund's party the win.

While this is the main case on Charles' agenda, he is also trying to help a poor young woman find out why her suitor abandoned her. He is also dealing with his ward Sari's broken heart as her suitor has also abandoned her.

I enjoyed this mystery. I like the Victorian setting as the story takes place in 1881. I like that Charles' wife Lady Jane is very involved in the Suffrage movement. I like that Charles is in a good place in his life with a successful business and a happy family.

ARC Review: Murder in the Upper Crust by Mindy Quigley

Murder in the Upper Crust

Author:
Mindy Quigley
Series: Deep Dish Mysteries (Book 6)
Publication: Minotaur (October 27, 2026)

Description: The sixth book in the delectable Deep Dish Mystery series, set in a Wisconsin pizzeria.

Chef Delilah O’Leary is going where no deep dish pizza chef has gone before: a swanky wellness retreat, where she's agreed to cater for a crowd of the who’s who. Instead of cashing a fat check for an easy gig, though, she encounters a diabolical plot with more layers than one of her signature pies.

The exclusive event, hosted by superstar guru Rhiannon Frost, promises inner transformation―but when a spiteful attendee turns up dead during the guided meditation, Delilah smells more than incense in the air. Every guest has a motive…and access to a sinister walled garden brimming with exotic poisonous plants.

With her restaurant short-staffed, and her boyfriend, Detective Calvin Capone, splitting his time between bartender duties and undercover sleuthing, Delilah’s got her hands full. Can she slice through the lies before the killer strikes again? Or will this luxe getaway turn into a one-way trip to the great beyond?

My Thoughts: Chef Delilah O'Leary finds herself at a swank wellness retreat. Her sous chef Sonya's new girlfriend Willow Wilson has a new job working for Rhiannon Frost who has made her name with her philosophy and through her latest best-selling book. Rhiannon is hosting a seminar at Nightshade Garden which is owned by Jay Mazur who was a famous rock star.

Jay and his daughter SilverMoon who is dating Delilah's ex Sam are working together to turn Nightshade Garden into a profitable event center. SilverMoon has a business dealing aromatherapy, candles and essential oils which she hopes Rhiannon will advertise at her seminars.

When the caterer for the event backs out, Sonya and Willow beg Delilah to take over. She reluctantly agrees since both she and her boyfriend Capone have the days off and Delilah had other plans for things that they could do together.

The first thing Delilah notices is the tension at the seminar. Sure, Sonya is worried about introducing Willow to her overwhelming mother Fran, but there is more. One of the attendees spends her time glaring at Rhiannon, SilverMoon and Rhiannon's publisher are holding secret meetings where Delilah overhears the word blackmail, and Rhiannon is driving Willow crazy by asking her to do three people's jobs and being really passive-aggressive to her.

When the glaring woman is found murdered by the smoke from a poisoned candle, it is up the Capone, Delilah, and the new Chief of Police to solve the crime before all the rich attendees scatter to the ends of the earth.

This was another excellent episode in this series. I like Delilah's practicality and the way even she gets swept up, at least momentarily, by the dazzling Rhiannon. The new police chief is a hoot with the way she keeps going off on verbal tangents.

ARC Review: Murder at Pellhurst Pond by Clara McKenna

Murder at Pellhurst Pond

Author:
Clara McKenna
Series: Stella and Lyndy Mysteries (Book 8)
Publication: Kensington (October 27, 2026)

Description: Viscount “Lyndy” Lyndhurst and his wife Stella, an American "Dollar Princess," dive into a new investigation after discovering a body in a pond on the estate of a man rumored to have killed his wife…

When a hot air balloon lands near Morrington Hall, it draws the attention of Stella and Lyndy as well as others, including Quentin Lockyear, son-in-law of Reuben Woodridge, a recluse who is suspected of murdering his wife. Quentin is keen to invest in aeronautic ships and automobiles, and invites Stella and Lyndy to Woodridge’s estate, Exbury Lodge.

Upon their arrival, they meet the mysterious patriarch, accompanied by his nurse, and his daughter, Enid. Reuben takes Stella and Lyndy on a tour of his stables and a large mill pond on the property, encouraging them to take his skiff out whenever they like. Returning the next day for a bird shoot, the couple go for a ride in the skiff only to discover a body in the pond.

The woman is dressed in expensive clothes but has no identification on her. An accidental drowning? Suicide? What is she doing on the property? When an autopsy reveals traces of poison, Stella and Lyndy attempt to discover who she was and who might have had a reason to do her harm. Rumors aside, what secrets are they hiding at Exbury Lodge?

My Thoughts: Stella and Lyndy next mystery begins when they discover the body of a well-dressed young woman while boating in the mill pond at Exbury Lodge. Reuben Woodbridge who owns the lodge was once a friend of Lyndy's father but has become a reclused since the death of his wife and rumors of his complicity in the death.

Reuben's daughter and her husband are trying to convince him to move with them to London where his financial business is. He doesn't want to leave his home and horses. His health is failing and his young nurse isn't very competent at nursing. And his grandson seems to have a gambling problem.

When the grandson is also found dead in an apparent fall from a horse, Stella and Lyndy's best suspect for the death of the young woman takes eliminates himself leaving them looking for someone who wanted both of them dead.

Reuben's son-in-law has been trying to convince him to invest in the latest crazes for balloons and fast cars and has gathered balloonists and auto enthusiasts to try to convince him. While the son-in-law is a possible suspect since he has clear financial motives for getting his father-in-law out of the way, he wouldn't have had any reason to kill the young woman.

Stella and Lyndy have lots to sort out including a postmistress with a grudge against Reuben and a nurse who is acting in a suspicious manner. All the while Stella is under pressure from her own mother-in-law because she's been married for a year and is not yet pregnant. Stella seems to be surrounded by mothers and babies which makes her feel jealous and deficient.

This was an interesting and entertaining episode in the Stella and Lyndy series.

ARC Review: The Key to a Killer by Olivia Blacke

The Key to a Killer

Author:
Olivia Blacke
Series: The Ruby and Cordelia Mysteries (Book 3)
Publication: Minotaur Books (October 20, 2026)

Description: A woman and her ghost roommate investigate their most personal case yet in Olivia Blacke’s The Key to a Killer, the next book in the Anthony Award winning Ruby and Cordelia Mysteries.

When Ruby Young discovered that her Boston apartment was haunted, she did what any reasonable person would do: befriend the ghost. Their relationship overcame a shaky start―Cordelia Graves never wanted a roommate in life, she certainly didn’t want one in death. After working together to solve a few murders, the two are close friends, but there’s a lingering question neither of them have been able to answer: what led to Cordelia’s death?

Lately things have been adding up that suggest foul play. And when Cordelia’s memories of that day start to come back, the roommates can’t ignore it anymore: Cordelia was murdered. Ruby and Cordelia are going to have to piece together what Cordelia’s final days looked like―otherwise a killer could go free.

My Thoughts: In this third Ruby and Cordelia mystery the roommates and partners in detection are finally ready to solve the mystery of Cordelia's murder. The problem is that Cordelia doesn't remember her death or the day leading up to it.

Ruby, who works for the same company Cordelia worked for before her death, wonders if Cordelia's death stems from her long-time affair with her married boss or if it has something to do with some software the company claims was stolen by a rival company.

Cordelia is sure that her lover didn't kill her, but her surety is based on feelings and not evidence. But her lover isn't the only possible suspect. A strange man was seen leaving Cordelia's apartment on the day she died carrying a laptop case. Cordelia's laptop along with her wallet, phone, keys, and watch all were missing when her body was found.

Then there is the reporter who discovered her body and who believed that Cordelia was going to blow the whistle on her company. That same reporter is working on an article about the statistically large number of burglaries in the apartment building.

Both Ruby and Cordelia are investigating what happened when Cordelia died in their own way. Ruby has been befriended by a man who works for the rival software company, and she hopes to get some answers from him. Cordelia is also lurking around the company and blowing up anything electronic that she gets close to.

This was an engaging mystery about two very unlikely friends and even less likely detectives.

ARC Review: Murder on Threadneedle Street by Andrea Penrose

Murder on Threadneedle Street

Author:
Andrea Penrose
Series: Wrexford & Sloane Mysteries (Book 10)
Publication: Kensington (September 29, 2026)

Description: Not all that glitters in Regency London is quite what it seems, as Charlotte and Lord Wrexford discover when a counterfeiting scheme draws them into a deadly web of murder and manipulation in USA Today bestselling author Andrea Penrose’s masterfully plotted mystery for readers of Victoria Thompson, C.S. Harris, Charles Finch, and Deanna Raybourn.

Lord Wrexford and Charlotte’s growing family ensures that life is a source of constant adventure. The addition of Wrexford’s half-sister to their household is proving an unexpected delight. But some surprises are less welcome—and trouble strikes when Hawk, one of the young boys in their care, arrives home distraught after learning that his new drawing teacher has been found murdered on Threadneedle Street.

Fletcher Campbell’s death could be dismissed as a random robbery turned violent. But as an artist herself, Charlotte suspects there’s more to the case than meets the eye. Closer examination reveals that a distinctive ring was taken from the victim’s finger. With Hawk pleading for the family to help solve the crime, Charlotte and Wrexford suddenly find themselves entangled in a fiendish mystery that harkens back to a decade-old scandal that nearly brought down the government.

It seems Campbell’s brother was the infamous leader of a counterfeiting gang that swindled the Bank of England. Most were apprehended, but forged banknotes remain a problem. Now, the Bank of England has offered £20,000 to anyone who can use the newly-invented engineering technologies to create the Inimitable Banknote—a complex design that cannot be counterfeited.

It’s a prize that could tempt anyone, and Wrexford and Sloane’s investigation turns even more fraught when one of their closest friends falls under suspicion. The deeper they probe, the more treachery comes to light. For when a lie so easily masquerades as truth, danger may be much closer than they think . . .

My Thoughts: The next Wrexford and Sloane mystery begins when Hawk, their youngest ward, comes home crying when he learns that his new drawing tutor has been murdered on Threadneedle Street. Despite all the signs leading to an ordinary street murder, they decide to look into the case for Hawk.

Soon, some suspicious things come out. The simple pewter ring he wore was taken from his hand. As they look into his background, they also learn that he spent ten years in prison because of his connection to a plot to steal currency on its way to France. While most of the perpetrators were found and hanged, the mastermind eluded capture.

Counterfeiting is a big business and growing worse. The Bank of England is sponsoring a competition with a massive cash prize to the inventor who can make an Inimitable Banknote. Somehow, it seems that the murder is related in some way to this competition.

The story was full of the people who were competing for the prize both fictional and real including the son of the man in charge of the ten-year-old failed plot who was the artistic genius who almost made the plot succeed. There was also a lot of information about creating a reliable currency at a time when many banks made their own banknotes.

I enjoyed the family dynamics as Wrex's young sister is finding her place in the family. I also enjoyed the large circle of friends who were part of the investigation.

This was another great addition to this historical mystery series.

ARC Review: The Pumpkin Vice Cafe by Ellie Alexander

The Pumpkin Vice Cafe

Author:
Ellie Alexander
Series: Bakeshop Mysteries (Book 24)
Publication: Minotaur Books (September 29, 2026)

Description: Another delicious installment in the Bakeshop Series set in Ashland, OR!

As autumn settles over the charming hamlet of Ashland, Oregon, ushering in cool, crisp breezes and a stunning show of color, everyone at Torte is keeping warm by whipping up a bevy of fall treats and spicy lattes. Jules is nearing her due date, and the whole town is abuzz―placing bets on when the twins will make their grand debut. Helen and the team are working on a secret surprise baby shower, complete with cupcakes, cookies, and a feast fit for royalty, or maybe just a mother-to-be.

Meanwhile, Lance and Arlo are busy planning their nuptials in what is sure to be as close to a royal wedding as Ashland has ever seen. But when the high-end wedding planner they hired is found dead in the frigid waters of Ashland Creek, what looks like a tragic accident, a slip on an icy bridge, quickly reveals itself as something much more sinister. Jules knows at once―this was no mishap. A killer is loose in Ashland, and they may be ready to strike again.

My Thoughts: Jules is in the last days of her pregnancy with twins and helping her friend Lance plan his wedding. When his new wedding planner is found dead - by Jules, she adds a murder investigation to her to-do list.

She soon learns that Tippy had a number of enemies. She owed money all over the place and the vendors are angry enough to kill. Tippy is also getting ready to sue one of her clients who hasn't paid her for her daughter's lavish wedding. Then there is her assistant who hasn't been paid in months. The list of suspects is large and many of them are eager to be hired to work on Lance's wedding.

The story is filled with wonderful descriptions of Ashland, Oregon, and wonderful foods all prepared by Jules' bakery/cafe Torte. The descriptions were so good that they made me hungry. The final copy of the book will include recipes.

Fans of cozy mysteries will enjoy the latest in the Bakeshop Mysteries.

ARC Review: Murder on the Sacred River by Tasha Alexander

Murder on the Sacred River

Author:
Tasha Alexander
Series: Lady Emily Mysteries (Book 20)
Publication: Minotaur Books (September 22, 2026)

Description: In this next enthralling mystery in Tasha Alexander’s bestselling series, Lady Emily chases down a killer in India along the misty banks of the sacred river Narmada.

1908: Lady Emily and her husband Colin Hargreaves, along with an eccentric group of English tourists, are vacationing in India at Ahilya Fort, the old home to the Maharaja’s family, when a man is found shot along the Narmada River. Emily and Colin jump into action, but their suspect list is large, including a wonderful spinster and her not-so-wonderful companion; a local doctor; a widow who lives nearby; an English explorer; and an Englishman who now runs a tea plantation near Darjeeling.

1740: Fifteen-year-old Ahilyabai has been married to the son of Malharrao Holkar, the Lord of the Malwa territory, for seven years. Now the time has finally come to produce an heir. But though Ahilya’s in-laws have shown her nothing but kindness, her notoriously-drunken husband remains a mystery to her, having rarely spoken to Ahilya since their wedding as children. Faced with this tortured and distant man, Ahilya’s sense of loyalty is tested as she attempts to balance fulfilling her duty with forging her own destiny. Her decisions will have ripple effects across time―including Lady Emily’s investigation almost two hundred years later.

Lady Emily’s case takes a dramatic turn when a shocking new person arrives at the fort―and when the killer strikes again shortly afterwards, she and Colin must race to uncover the villain’s identity before it’s too late.

My Thoughts: Lady Amelia and her husband Colin Hargreaves are vacationing in India after Colin does a little something for the king. They find themselves invited to Ahilya's Fort on the banks of the Narmada River along with an assortment of other English travelers.

When the body of an Englishman is found in a boat with a gunshot wound to his head, their vacation becomes an investigation because the local police are more than willing to hand the case off to them. Once the man's identity becomes known after an initial misidentification, Amelia and Colin discover that many of their fellow travelers might have had reason to kill him.

The eccentric lady and her bad-tempered companion, the visiting historian, a man named Mr. Ralston, a local doctor, and a local widowed lady are all suspects in this one.

Woven into the mystery plot are flashbacks to 1740 and the woman for whom the fort is named. She was married at eight to the future maharajah and educated to be a helpmeet to him. The flashbacks tell of her life from childhood to old age. She did a lot of good as ruler after the deaths of her husband and in-laws and has become a figure of importance in the region. Rumor has it she left a treasure behind her which excites current (1908) day fortune hunters.

This was an entertaining historical detail filled with wonderful scenes of India at the time period. Amelia greatly enjoys the food and drink and the culture while still investigating and solving the mystery.

I did rather miss that their boys were left home in England but enjoyed Henry's letters pleading for an elephant.

ARC Review: A Field Guide to Death and Deceit by Michelle L. Cullen

A Field Guide to Death and Deceit

Author:
Michelle L. Cullen
Series: Harry & Emma Mystery (Book 2)
Publication: Crooked Lane Books (September 15, 2026)

Description: Widower and anthropologist Harry Lancaster and his Gen Z colleague Emma are back for more murder and mayhem when they stumble upon a dead farmer.

This delightful sequel to A Field Guide to Murder is perfect for fans of Richard Osman and Benjamin Stevenson.

When an odd request leads Harry Lancaster to agree to meet his former sweetheart Willow at a farm on the outskirts of town, Emma’s suspicions run high, and she insists on joining him. Instead of Willow greeting them when they arrive, they discover the farm's owner dead, with a corn rake embedded in his back.

After being interrogated by the police, Harry and Emma return to his home to find a bereft Willow, who admits she lost her life savings in a real estate scam involving the farm. Worried Willow will become the main murder suspect, Harry decides to help her, despite Emma’s concerns.

To bring the swindlers—and murderer—to justice, Harry recruits his potentially shady, financial-whiz brother and a neighborhood teenage hacker. Then Willow’s realtor is declared missing, and Harry’s brother is caught up in the fray.

As the team unearths clues, they increasingly dodge danger in their race to save Willow and Harry’s brother before anyone else turns up dead.

My Thoughts: Harry and Emma are back home and working on their final report when Harry gets a call from an old girlfriend. Willow has become the victim of a scam that has stolen all of the assets she and her husband had accrued for their retirement. She's hoping Harry can help her get them back.

However, the first thing that Harry and Emma discover when they go to meet Willow is the death of an old farmer who owned the property Willow thought she was buying. Harry and Emma find themselves not only trying to solve the murder but trying to recover Willow's lost retirement fund.

Harry makes a call to his brother Eddie for some help since Eddy was an accountant. He and Harry are not close. As a matter of fact, Harry has always thought that his brother might be dealing less than legally.

Eddie arrives promptly and the trio work together to try to unravel all the plots and plans in motion. Harry is surprised that his brother has been leading a secret life and that he is intimately involved in the scam. Now, saving his brother has been added to the things he and Emma need to accomplish.

This was an engaging and entertaining story filled with interesting characters. I like the father-daughter relationship that has grown between Harry and Emma since she was first hired as his carer after he broke his hip.

ARC Review: The Mystic and the Missing Girl by Vikki VanSickle

The Mystic and the Missing Girl

Author:
Vikki VanSickle
Publication: Minotaur (September 8, 2026)

Description: Small town secrets, a reluctant psychic, and a cold case that could expose them all.

Drew Benson can read tarot cards and get impressions from objects―she just never expected to use her gifts to investigate an infamous cold case.

Drew Benson has a secret. She gets visions, something she hasn’t tapped into since she was a teenager, when her late aunt, a TV psychic known as Hannah Mystic, became the scapegoat in the unsolved disappearance of a local teenager. Twenty years later, Drew is happy to ignore her gift, focusing instead on keeping the metaphysical shop she inherited from Hannah afloat, wrangling her sole, astrology-obsessed employee, and dodging local rake Foster Banks in her picturesque lakeside hometown.

But when Drew's arch-nemesis from high school, now a big city reporter, decides to investigate the cold case from all those years ago, it’s Drew’s ability that could finally make a break in the decades old mystery. With bills piling up, a disapproving mother laying on the guilt, and a local vandal who wants Drew and her witchy store gone, Drew has a lot to lose. But what she stands to gain―finding out what happened to the missing teen, clearing her aunt’s name, and a second chance at belonging―could change everything.

In The Mystic and the Missing Girl, Vikki VanSickle seamlessly draws readers into an utterly charming world in this unputdownable, small town mystery.

My Thoughts: Drew Benson came home to Stanfield when she inherited her aunt's metaphysical shop and the apartment above it. Her aunt was Hannah Mystic, TV psychic, was a scapegoat in the disappearance of Ginny Evans, high school senior, twenty years earlier. Her psychic talents provided clues but didn't manage to find Ginny.

It is the twentieth anniversary of Ginny's death, and someone is targeting Drew's new store with graffiti. Drew is on a shoestring budget already since the notoriety of the store seems to have died with her Aunt Hannah. She's worried about keeping the doors open and her one employee employed.

When an old high school nemesis now turned reporter walks in the door and asks to see her aunt's journals, Drew finds herself involved in a new investigation into what happened to Ginny Evans all those years ago. She also finds herself using the psychic powers she set aside after seeing how her aunt was treated during the first investigation.

This was an excellent and engaging story. I liked the way Drew settles back into her hometown and makes a place of her own design there. I thought the mystery was well done. I liked the variety of characters in the story.

ARC Review: Murder on Charity Lane by Jo Nichols

Murder on Charity Lane

Author:
Jo Nichols
Series: Marigold Cottages Mysteries
Publication: Minotaur (August 18, 2026)

Description: Months after the shocking murders at Marigold Cottages, eccentric landlady Mrs. B finds the peace and quiet a little too peaceful. That’s why she invites her young friend CJ Moore to move into a now-vacant cottage: CJ is a suspect in the death of her employer, a wealthy Santa Barbara philanthropist who tumbled down the stairs of his mansion during a dinner party. The dead man’s much-younger widow claims she saw CJ push him, but Mrs. B is certain that she’s innocent. Why? Oh, just a feeling.

That’s enough for her to summon the Marigold Cottages Murder Collective. Lily-Ann will marshal the facts, Hamilton will dig around online, Sophie and Nicholas will offer eyewitness testimony, and everyone will hope that Ocean keeps Mrs. B out of trouble.

Just as the tenants begin to suspect that Elsa is in fact the perpetrator, there’s a second murder. A bloodier one. And with their tight-knit community in the crosshairs, they must prove her innocence - or accept her guilt.

My Thoughts: The eccentric characters who live in Marigold Cottages in Santa Barbara have a new mystery to solve when Ocean's new girlfriend CJ is accused of killing her elderly employer. Mrs. B is all in on reassembling the Marigold Cottages Murder Collective to solve the crime. In fact, she is so all in as to put the cottages at risk to secure CJ's freedom from jail.

This story is told from multiple viewpoints. Lily-Ann is the one who puts all the facts together in her spreadsheets and with her unique viewpoint. Sophie, a fund raiser, and Nicholas who works for the city have met the victim and his wife at a party at his home where Sophie was invited to make contacts with rich Santa Barbarans. They were present when Frank fell from the top of a stairway and broke his neck.

CJ has worked for the retired music producer since she finished college and has a father-daughter relationship with him. Unfortunately, his wife Karina is not CJ's biggest fan. She resents CJ's closeness with her much older husband. Therefore, when he falls, she immediately tells the police that CJ pushed him.

Other viewpoints include Vernon who is the police detective assigned to the case and who has had previous encounters with the Marigold Cottage residents, Hamilton who is the computer guy who is phobic about leaving his house, Ocean who is the artist in residence and the most likely to ride herd on Mrs. B. Mrs. B is also a viewpoint character and the most eccentric of the crew.

This was a fun mystery filled with widely disparate characters who have nonetheless formed a found family to envy.

ARC Review: Death on the Books by Victoria Gilbert

Death on the Books

Author:
Victoria Gilbert
Series: Blue Ridge Library Mysteries (Book 10)
Publication: Crooked Lane Books (August 4, 2026)

Description: A sleuthing library director is on the case when a patron drops dead in the tenth installment of Victoria Gilbert’s critically acclaimed Blue Ridge Library mysteries.

When a stranger falls over dead in the Taylorsford Public Library, clutching a crumpled piece of paper inscribed only with the words hen and sapphire, Library Director Amy Muir must once again investigate. She soon learns that the man is the personal assistant to Warren Sanderson, an art collector and dealer who just so happens to be visiting Kurt Kendrick, the godfather of Amy’s twins.

When the autopsy reveals that the library patron was poisoned, suspicion falls on those who knew him—mainly Sanderson, his granddaughter Heather, and Kurt. Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, Amy digs into the contentious relationships between Kurt and the Sandersons. But as it turns out, suspects abound, and when Amy’s best friend’s boyfriend is implicated, the case becomes even more complicated.

Amy’s research ties the dead man’s note to a lost treasure of the Romanov empire. Then another person falls victim. With the bodies piling up, Amy knows better than anyone that killers often keep killing until they’re caught, and she’ll stop at nothing to get to the bottom of this tangled mystery.

My Thoughts: Amy's next case comes to her when a man wanders into the Taylorsford Public Library one evening and dies right in front of her. She soon learns that he was an assistant to Warren Sanderson who is an art collector and dealer who is visiting Amy's friend Kurt Kendrick. Amy notices a rather cryptic note that the man dropped.

Amy wants to stay out of the murder investigation. She is perfectly content to just do a little research for the sheriff. But things don't work out quite the way Amy would wish. The note leads to a missing Faberge egg and a clue to the egg's whereabouts might be hidden in one of her aunt's deceased husband's paintings which Sanderson would really like to buy.

That's just one of the twists in this 10th Blue Ridge Library Mystery. I enjoyed catching up with Amy and her growing family in this one. Many characters from earlier books in the series also have large roles to play in this one.

ARC Review: Probable Caws by Donna Andrews

Probable Caws

Author:
Donna Andrews
Series: Meg Langslow Mysteries (Book 39)
Publication: Minotaur Books (August 4, 2026)

Description: Readers will flock to New York Times bestselling author Donna Andrews's next installment in the award-winning Meg Langslow series.

Meg has finally found time to get some blacksmithing done when a call from her dad interrupts her--can she come out to Ragnar’s right away to help with the horses? Their friend Ragnar Ragnarsen, who is gradually turning the enormous house on his nearby estate into an authentic moated castle, has agreed to shelter nearly fifty horses for Hoof and Hearth, an equine rescue organization that has lost access to the farm where the horses have been living. The owner of the farm recently died without leaving a will, and while his older son Abel would be happy to let the horses stay, younger brother George wants to sell to a developer . . . and is suspected of sending a thug to harm the horses as part of his efforts to evict Hoof and Hearth.

That night, while Meg and her family are camping at one of Ragnar’s barns, to keep an eye on the horses, they discover that the thug has been murdered. Unfortunately George is alibied . . . but his horse-loving brother Abel is not. Neither are the hot-tempered founder of Hoof and Hearth or the passionately protective ex-jockey who serves as its stablemaster. Meg juggles helping keep the horses safe and doing what she can to help the chief solve the thug’s murder . . . all the while hoping that the killer won’t turn out to be one of the dedicated horse rescuers she has come to like and respect.

My Thoughts: The 39th Meg Langslow mystery begins with a phone call. Meg's father calls her to come to Ragnar's to help with the horses. When she arrives, she learns that Ragnar has volunteered to help Hoof and Hearth house their rescue horses. Abel Abernathy has been hosting them on his farm but his father recently passed away without a will and now the farm belongs to both Abel and his brother George. George wants the horses gone and the farm sold to developers.

Abel fears that his brother might do harm to the horses and wants them safe until the inheritance can be settled. The founder of the rescue is upset and testy because of it. She's more likely to be alienating donors than finding new ones.

When a man is found dead in one of the horse barns, at first it looks like it is George. It turns out the be George's chief henchman instead. It would be good if the killer turned out to be George, but he's alibied. Unfortunately, neither Abel nor the rescue founder have alibis.

This was another excellent episode in the series. There are lots of humorous moments including Meg's grandfather deciding to paint patterns on some of the wildlife to see if the patterns discourage flies. Meg's twins get into decorating the animals. Then there is the horse who is excellent at opening gates and untying knots. There are some heartbreaking moments too as the abused horses are described.

Fans of the series will enjoy this latest episode.

ARC Review: Deadly Does It by Abbi Waxman

Deadly Does It

Author:
Abbi Waxman
Series: A Mason & Mann Mystery (Book 2)
Publication: Berkley (July 21, 2026)

Description: When Natasha Mason’s AA sponsor is in deadly danger, she turns to the cranky yet brilliant Julia Mann for help, in this exciting new mystery novel from the USA Today bestselling author of One Death at a Time.

Mason, a Gen Z adrenaline junkie, and Mann, an ex-con, ex-actress, and lawyer turned sleuth, have already solved one murder together. United by their commitment to sarcasm and general disappointment with the human race, they now face a second crime that’s way too close to home. Alexa Rousso keeps having accidents, and no one but her thinks it’s a coincidence. Could her checkered past be coming back to get her? Mason and Mann’s investigation takes them to the Bay Area, to the Central Coast, and – of course – to the hippest spots in Los Angeles. Will the Berkeley boho vibe convert Mann from vintage couture? Will the wine snobs of Ojai drive Mason to drink (or to vinicide, which isn’t even a thing)? More importantly, will they solve the mystery before the murderer’s sights settle on the detectives themselves, or will this new challenge also be their last?

My Thoughts: The second Mason and Mann mystery begins when Mason's AA sponsor Alexa had problems. The event she's organized is sabotaged when the extremely large vegetables used as decor fall from the ceiling causing chaos. Then she mentions that she has been receiving threatening letters.

Juliet Mann, ex-alcoholic, ex-con, ex-movie star turned lawyer, agrees to take Alexa's case and try to find out where the harassment is coming from. Mason, also an ex-addict and Gen Z adrenaline junkie, is Mann's assistant who has a special interest in this case.

As Mann and Mason try to unravel Alexa's past to discover what secrets she might have and not remember or not say, they travel to Northern California which is also Mason's home turf. She needs to see her parents since her father has had a recent heart attack and is being harassed at work in the hopes that he will resign his teaching position.

Problems with her sponsor and problems with her family add a lot of stress to Mason's investigation. Luckily, she has the help of Juliet Mann and her eccentric cast of associates as they unravel old secrets and new ones too.

I enjoyed the large cast of interesting characters. I like the relationships between them all. The mystery was also satisfyingly complex.

ARC Review: Savvy Summers and the Po'boy Perils by Sandra Jackson-Opoku

Savvy Summers and the Po'boy Perils

Author:
Sandra Jackson-Opoku
Series: Savvy Summers (Book 2)
Publication: Minotaur Books (July 21, 2026)

Description: The next delectable mystery featuring quick-witted, unforgettable Savvy Summers, owner of a soul food café in Chicago.

Savvy has her work cut out when an old friend hires her to cater a company luncheon at a nearby office building on Chicago's South Side. Stepping out of her traditional soul food comfort zone, Savvy whips together a menu of Creole classics, with her own spin, of course―mini po’boys with assorted fillings, sunburst salad, and bread pudding using Great Aunt Essie’s famous buttermilk biscuits.

But when someone is found dead in the company’s conference room, Savvy’s culinary creations are suddenly in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. While the focus should be on their delicious flavors and inventive techniques, Savvy’s beloved cafĂ© instead becomes the center of a murder investigation once again.

Caught within a messy web of gossip, miscommunication, and fraught coworker relationships, Savvy will have to settle the confusion to clear her name. Somebody’s hiding something, and with the help of her trusty assistant manager, Penny LopĂ©s, Savvy sets out uncover exactly who is to blame. With familiar faces turning up the heat on her investigation and her cafĂ© still in hot water, will Savvy be able to save her reputation before it’s too late?

My Thoughts: The second Savvy Summers mystery, set on the South Side of Chicago, has the chef expanding her repertoire into Cajun food and catering an event for an old acquaintance. When one of the attendees is killed by poison in one of Savvy's po-boys, Savvy is on the case.

Savvy is helped by her first ex-husband Fanon who is a Chicago police officer. She's also helped by the unhoused man who wanders the neighborhood with his canine companion Sergeant Stubby.

Savvy is also dealing with the closing of her restaurant because of a construction project in the neighborhood. Even though her new restaurant will be a flagship part of the new development, it is hard for her to leave the memories built there since she opened.

This was an entertaining cozy mystery filled with mostly likeable characters. I enjoyed the Chicago setting.

Audiobook Review: Murder on the Clock by Lucy Connelly

Murder on the Clock

Author:
Lucy Connelly
Narrator: Kimberly M. Wetherell
Series: Mercy McCarthy Mystery (Book 4)
Publication: Bookouture (November 14, 2025)
Length: 6 hours and 42 minutes

Description: The town of Shamrock Cove is gearing up for a grand summer festival… but the fĂŞte turns fatal when a clockmaker is killed. Can amateur sleuth Mercy McCarthy crack the case?

When Mercy McCarthy takes her beloved mother’s watch to be fixed, she’s completely charmed by the little repair store and the father-and-son duo who run it. Little does she know that the clock is ticking… when she returns, she finds the father lying unconscious amid broken glass, and her mother’s watch is missing.

The police think Mr. Flynn was attacked in a burglary gone wrong but soon suspects closer to home start coming out of the clockwork. Mercy, her sister, and their canine sidekick, master body sniffer-outer Mr. Poe, set out to gather clues and help the local detective find the killer.

Could it be the family next door to the Flynns who’ve been feuding for decades? His fiercest rival, who’s long dreamed of shutting him down? Or was his son less devoted than he seemed? As the hours tick away, another murder and the discovery of a long-buried secret changes everything…

The summer festival is fast approaching. Can Mercy solve the mystery in the nick of time, or will someone stop her clock?

My Thoughts: Mercy begins this story by taking a watch inherited from her mother to the local watch repair shop to see if she can get it working to gift her sister on their upcoming birthday. She likes Mr. Flynn and his son and is therefore distressed when she learns that his shop has been broken into and he has been gravely injured. She is even more distressed to learn that her mother's watch was stolen during the event.

Local police Detective Inspector Kieran has recruited Mercy to help him investigate since most of his officers are down with the flu. Also, he figures that he can keep Mercy out of trouble if he enlists her help.

When the son is also injured and dies on Mercy's back doorstep, Mercy is even more involved. There are a number of possible perpetrators including the family who lives next to the Flynn's farm who are convinced that he has cheated them out of some of their land. Also, the local jeweler is convinced that the Flynn's are stealing business from him by repairing jewelry in addition to watches.

Lots of secrets are uncovered as Mercy and Kieran investigate including secret romances and a mother who isn't nearly as dead as Mr. Flynn had said.

This was another entertaining cozy mystery. I like the way Mercy and Kieran's relationship is progressing. There is even a hint that Mercy's sister Lizzie might be finding a new love interest after her earlier tragic losses.

One thread that began in the first book concerns a potential stalker who just might be the women's unknown father. This thread is still in need of resolution.

I bought this one April 8. You can buy your copy here.

Audiobook Review: Death at Inishmore Castle by Lucy Connelly

Death at Inishmore Castle

Author:
Lucy Connelly
Narrator: Kimberly M. Wetherall
Series: A Mercy McCarthy Mystery (Book 3)
Publication: Bookouture (April 10, 2025)
Length: 6 hours and 32 minutes

Description: A grand castle, a glass of Irish whiskey, a good book by the fire… and a rather mysterious murder?

Historic Inishmore Castle is opening its doors for the first time, hosting a charming weekend of whiskey tasting and soda bread baking. Sisters Mercy and Lizzie McCarthy are badly in need of a break, but their relaxing trip takes a decidedly unrestful turn when Mercy finds fellow guest Father Brennen slumped over the desk in the library… Did he have one glass too many or did someone want him dead?

Even more curiously, Mercy swiftly learns that the priest was no priest at all. So why was he searching through dusty old journals? Can the legend of Inishmore’s lost treasure possibly be true?

Mercy’s suspicions of foul play are confirmed when another of their party is found drowned in the lake at the edge of the manor’s estate. It can’t be a coincidence! Someone in this idyllic Irish castle is up to no good and Mercy is determined to find out who’s behind it, accompanied by her reluctant fellow sleuth and beloved dog Mr. Poe.

With a host of frightened guests and worried staff, and a storm closing in, Mercy soon has more suspects than bedrooms in the castle. Could it be the unconvincing nun, the busybody birdwatcher, or are the owners hiding something sinister? When Mercy realizes there are secret passages in the walls, she thinks she might have cracked the case… but will she track the killer down, or will Inishmore be her resting place forever more?

My Thoughts: The third Mercy McCarthy mystery has Mercy, her sister Lizzie, and lots of their neighbors from the court spending the weekend at Inishmore Castle. The owners of the castle are planning to open it to visitors and also make their whisky brand more popular.

Among the other guests are a priest and a nun. Mercy is suspicious of them as they don't act like any other priests and nuns she has met. She finds them arguing on a couple of occasions despite their claims that they don't know each other.

When Mercy discovers the body of the priest in the study, Mercy wants to call Kieran - after she does a bit of investigating herself, but a storm has knocked out cell phone service and flooding has made the bridge to the castle impossible. She discovers identification in the priest's wallet bearing another name and convincing her that something odd is going on.

A break in the storm allows Kieran and his crew to arrive. The two begin to investigate with Kieran reluctantly allowing Mercy to participate. There are rumors of a lost treasure hidden in the castle which might account for the priest in disguise.

When the nun, who also turns out to be fake, is also murdered by strangulation and disposal in the pond, the crime gets more complex. Mercy had been looking at her as the prime suspect. There are other things going on and other suspicious guests. The young birdwatcher is not talking about her past. The accountant is most notable to Mercy for his shifty eyes. And the rich couple from Tennessee who are eager to distribute the local whisky includes a kleptomaniac wife.

Untangling all the characters and finding the treasure keeps Mercy and Kieran busy and the real killer is still to be caught.

This was another entertaining cozy. Mercy is overly curious and impulsive but has a good heart. Keeping her safe looks to be Kieran's new goal in life.

I bought this one for my Kindle November 21, 2025, and the audiobook May 25, 2026. You can buy your copy here.

Audiobook Review: Death by the Book by Lucy Connelly

Death by the Book

Author:
Lucy Connelly
Narrator: Kimberly M. Wetherell
Series: Mercy McCarthy (Book 2)
Publication: Bookouture (November 12, 2024)
Length: 6 hours and 57 minutes

Description: Irish scones, shamrock shortbread, a local literary festival… and a rather dead author? Join Mercy McCarthy on her next case!

Mercy and Lizzie McCarthy are settling in to the charming seaside village of Shamrock Cove on the west coast of Ireland. Lizzie throws herself into organizing a book festival and mystery writer Mercy even agrees to come out of her bookish hidey-hole to get involved. But then the event’s star author is found dead. James Brandt was killed by a falling bookshelf in his own cottage...

The local detective is not convinced by Mercy’s suspicion of murder but when someone else turns up dead, the police cannot ignore it. There’s just one problem: Mercy and Lizzie’s beloved dog Mr. Poe sniffs out the second body in the storeroom of their own bookstore. And now all the gossips seem determined to pin the murder on Mercy!

Convinced the police are focusing on a red herring in this real-life case, Mercy needs to act fast to clear her name. A meddling mayor, a cheerful chef and a bashful botanist make her suspect list, but it’s not until Mercy discovers a tatty old photograph in the local library archive that she is onto the killer’s trail.

With the police keen to shut her out of the murder investigation, can Mercy play this case by the book, or will she be the next to fall off the shelf…?

My Thoughts: The second Mercy McCarthy cozy mystery takes place during a book festival. Lizzie is busy organizing it and Mercy helps with the organization and is involved with panels and book signings.

Mercy is really irritated at one signing because author James Brandt dominates the discussion and throws in some negative comments about Mercy's books. The next day Mercy and Lizzie go to James' cottage to remind him of his book signing only to find him dead on the floor under a toppled bookshelf.

Mercy and Detective Inspector Kieran are not convinced that it was an accident and the tox screen proves them both right. Someone has poisoned the annoying author. His agent is wandering around throwing her weight around. She has to speak at the wake and make a long, drawn-out speech as she accepts an award he won at the banquet. She's also threatening Lizzie about not sending back the large number of books she ordered for Brandt's signing all the while trying to poach Mercy from her current agent.

However, finding her dead in the bookshop's storeroom wasn't at all expected. Now there are two murders to solve and a villain from Brandt's past to discover.

This was another cozy mystery where the writer amateur detective blames her writer's brain for her inability to stay out of the investigation. At least this time Kieran is encouraging her help because he says it will be easier to keep her safe if he knows what she is investigating.

I liked the setting and I like the relationships in the story. Mercy and Lizzie are very compatible sisters. Mercy's relationship with Kieran is also interesting.

Audiobook Review: An Irish Bookshop Murder by Lucy Connelly

An Irish Bookshop Murder

Author:
Lucy Connelly
Narrator: Kimberly M. Wetherell
Series: Mercy McCarthy (Book 1)
Publication: Bookouture (August 22, 2024)
Length: 8 hours and 25 minutes

Description: Meet Ireland’s newest daring detective: she’s a bookstore owner, a coffee lover, and a crime writer. Now Mercy McCarthy needs a little Irish luck as she takes on her first case!

After receiving unexpected inheritance from her grandfather, Mercy and her twin sister Lizzie are now the proud owners of a charming antique bookshop in the tiny Irish village of Shamrock Cove But before they can take in the beautiful view of the sea, one of their neighbors drops dead!

Mercy finds the Judge, a well-respected man who lives next door, dying on his own doorstep. She rushes to help, but with his final words, he accuses Mercy of murder! Most of their new neighbors hear his words and, with suspicion pointing at Mercy, she decides to investigate the case to clear her name.

Searching amongst the Judge’s old books, Mercy uncovers letters proving several of the townsfolk had reason to dislike the judge—but was it the local pub landlord, the kindly cook or neighborly knitter who killed him?

Then Mercy’s chief suspect turns up dead and she receives a threatening note, typed on paper from her own bookstore… Ireland was supposed to be a fresh start for Mercy and Lizzie, but dead bodies keep turning up.

Does Mercy have what it takes to nail the culprit or will the killer close the book on her time in this charming Irish village?

My Thoughts: The first Mercy McCarthy mystery has the famous author moving to Ireland with her twin sister when they inherit a home and bookshop from a grandfather they never knew existed.

Mercy and Lizzie are ready for a new start. Mercy has been dealing with a stalker and the loss of her mother to cancer. Lizzie is also dealing with her mother's death and the deaths of her fiance and her soon-to-be stepdaughter in a car accident. Lizzie's losses had her hospitalized and her twin determined to help her.

A new start in Ireland is eagerly anticipated by both of them, but discovering the body of one of their neighbors is not the start they were hoping for. The Judge dies after a gathering to meet Mercy and Lizzie and, while Mercy tries CPR, she is unsuccessful. Even more strange is that the Judge seems to indicate that he suspects Mercy of his murder before he dies.

The local police detective Kieran is the grandson of another of the residents of the exclusive court where Mercy and Lizzie have inherited a home. He is suspicious of Mercy who decides that she has to find out who murdered the Judge before she can continue writing her book which is a little schedule.

Since the Court, where their houses are, is a gated community, Mercy is certain that one of the other residents has to be the murderer. As she investigates, she gets to know the gay couple, the shop owner who butted heads with the Judge and her husband the accountant, the photographer who could be a model herself, and Kieran's grandmother.

Mercy's career as a successful mystery author with a penchant for research gives her a leg up in investigating which Kieran is not very happy about. The two butt heads a lot, but he does take advantage of her talents.

This was a cute cozy mystery that starts a series. I liked the characters and look forward to more of their adventures.

ARC Review: Murder at the Spirit Lounge by Jess Kidd

Murder at the Spirit Lounge

Author:
Jess Kidd
Series: Nora Breen Investigates (Book 2)
Publication: Atria Books (June 16, 2026)

Description: In the second installment of the Nora Breen Investigates series—“perfect for cozy mystery lovers” (Book Riot)—beloved former nun Nora Breen returns, this time to track down a ghostly killer before it’s too late.

When Dolores Chimes, a famous medium, arrives in Gore-on-Sea, even surly Detective Inspector Rideout is lured in by her promises of messages for the afterlife.

But after a reading goes disastrously wrong, Dolores loses her life—and the six sitters at the sĂ©ance with her fall victim to supernatural deaths themselves in the days following the nightmare of a reading.

Determined to unveil the truth, Nora finds herself chasing a ghostly serial killer she believes to be responsible, before the sixth victim—Detective Rideout himself—perishes along with the others.

My Thoughts: Nora Breen, former Carmelite nun, is back again solving crimes in Gore-on-Sea in the years shortly after World War II.

A famous medium arrives in Gore-on-Sea and hosts a seance with a select group of patrons. A gangster, an upcoming young actress, a retired army officer, a Lady and her downtrodden daughter, and Detective Inspector Rideout all arrive by invitation to hear messages from the dead.

Nora is called in when the medium dies suspiciously during the seance. After all, she spent many years as a nurse at her monastery. When other attendees at the seance also begin dying in unexpected ways, Nora and Rideout have to find the killer before Rideout becomes the last victim.

I enjoyed this historical mystery. I like that Nora is trying to find a place for herself in the world after leaving the Carmelites. In this one, she begins working for the local newspaper which fits her personality excellently. I enjoyed all the post-WWII details.

ARC Review: A Botanist's Guide to Tradition and Treachery by Kate Khavari

A Botanist's Guide to Tradition and Treachery

Author:
Kate Khavari
Series: Saffron Everleigh Mysteries (Book 5)
Publication: Crooked Lane Books (June 9, 2026)

Description: Brilliant botanist Saffron Everleigh has set sail on her first research expedition, but it's disrupted by accusations of murder when one of her fellow scientists is murdered in this daring fifth installment.

Saffron Everleigh is newly engaged and full of optimism as she sets off on the adventure of a lifetime for any scientist: a research expedition. She sails to newly formed Turkey with her fiancé, Alexander Ashton, and a bevy of fellow researchers under the watchful and reformed eye of Dr. Henry. With only two other women on board, Saffron soon finds she is right back in the same infuriatingly misogynistic environment that marked the earliest days of her career. Only this time, Saffron is determined to show everyone, including Alexander, that she can handle the trials of an expedition.

And trials she has in spades. Before the expedition team has even arrived, Saffron has managed to find an enemy in historian Joseph Clark, who frequently torments the assistant that Saffron has taken under her wing, Martin Neill. But when Martin unexpectedly dies, Saffron is targeted as the main suspect.

Falling ruins, venomous snakes, and mysteriously blocked passages are the least of Saffron’s worries. With unexpected help from a familiar face, Alexander and Saffron have to work fast to prove not only that Saffron is innocent but that they both have nothing to do with a larger conspiracy at play among the expedition crew.

My Thoughts: The fifth Saffron Everleigh historical mystery sees Saffron on her first scientific expedition. She is traveling to the newly formed Turkey to explore Smyrna. Her fiancĂ© Alexander Ashton is along on the expedition which is led by Dr. Henry. Unfortunately, Dr. Joseph Clark is also along on the expedition and is the one Saffron is supposed to work with most closely.

Clark has taken an inexplicable dislike to Saffron and is playing dangerous pranks on her including a venomous snake, locking her in an underground room, dosing her with sleeping powders, and toppling a loose stone on her. Dr. Henry and even Alexander are inclined to see these things as pranks often done to those new on expeditions though Alexander believes Clark is going much too far.

Saffron is determined to take care of herself despite these "pranks" and doesn't want to look weak by depending on her fiancĂ© who has assigned her a "helper" named Martin Neill who is a young biologist. When Neill takes ill and dies, Saffron becomes an immediate suspect in his death because of rumors Clark has started about their supposed relationship.

Arrested by the Turkish police, Saffron needs to depend on Alexander and a mysterious character from earlier in the series to unravel what is happening and to clear her name. Saffron soon finds herself in the middle of antiquities smuggling and old secrets.

This was another engaging historical mystery about an interesting main character trying to make a place for herself in a man's world.
