Desperate Desires Blog Tour

Welcome to my stop on the Desperate Desires Blog Tour. I am pleased to have a guest post from Terri Wolffe for you today.
**************************

The Nascent Writer

Kathy, thank you so much for allowing me to post on your blog.

Like anyone who follows the trends in publishing, I find myself fascinated with everything that’s happening in the publishing world—from the explosion of ereaders to the struggles of the big 6 publishing icons. And given the ease with which one can self publish these days, it’s no surprise that new and beginning writers have exploded onto the scene.

I recently read an article on the how tos and what not to do when it comes to self publishing. Of course, all the important tasks were there: Hire an editor, have a great cover and proof read your manuscript again and again.

But where I found it interesting was when the writer stressed that one should not self publish until you have all your ducks in a row and you’ve gained an uncertain amount of mastery in your writing.

So I thought about it…and thought about it some more…until I came to this conclusion: sometimes you have to just jump in, immerse yourself, and learn as you grow.

The assumption is made that the writer has already followed up on the most obvious of tasks like those listed above. But as for garnering experience? I thought of the ten lepers who were healed of leprosy (okay, forgive the corny biblical analogy). If you recall, it’s as they were walking that they were healed. I believe that so it is with the nascent writer, myself included, that as we write, our skills will improve and we’ll learn as we grow.

I’ve found that in my case, I wasn’t willing to wait until the moon was the perfect shade of color, until the stars aligned, or the sun was giving off just the right amount of rays, or when the sky was the perfect blue and when the weather was exactly the right temperature…just to publish my book. It’s this whole publishing journey that I’m loving. I’m reading and trying to follow the trends that I deem best for me, but I also know that I’m creating my own roadmap as I go. That’s where the experience becomes treasured. I’m learning from my own and others’ mistakes.

When we do that, in the process, we become better writers. Our readership lets us know whether they love or hate what we produce. Our skills become honed by fire when we take in the criticism and mine through the accolades in search of what will cause us to improve and grow. I’m glad I pulled the publishing trigger, jumped in and immersed myself. Sometimes it’s in the doing that we learn the most. To borrow an old Nike phrase, I’ll use it to encourage the would-be writer to follow the wise advice of others. But at the end of the day, the week, or the year: You have to just do it!

Here’s to your success!
Terri Wolffe
Author of Desperate Desires

Here is the book blurb:
The cunningly audacious Lady Lucinda Davenport is by no means a conventional woman. Smart and fiercely determined, she’s more comfortable adding numbers than she’ll ever be socializing with highfalutin members of the ton. When desperate straits force her into action to save her home and lands, she finds herself faced with only one option. Summoning every ounce of her courage, she sets in motion a wild and raunchy scheme that would set the ton on fire if they ever caught wind of her actions.

Lucien Brandford, fourth Duke of Carlsborough, is a dangerous man. Wealthy beyond imagination and handsome to a fault, the Duke is sought after by nearly every woman of the ton. Single, widowed, or married, ladies vie for his attention with cutthroat precision. But the Duke has no tolerance for the machinations of his title and fortune-hungry peers. He seeks his pleasure from women who require no commitment.

That attitude ensnares the Duke in Lady Lucinda’s plan. Caught unawares, Lucien finds himself at the mercy of a bold and luscious woman whom he cannot decide if he wants to strangle or bed.The sensual dance that follows between captor and captive as they engage in a volatile battle for control, culminates in a seismic eruption—both psychological and sensual. As tempers flare and sparks fly, an intense and erotic interlude of passion ensues.

The temperamental lovers soon discover what all the world knows: that in order to possess the love of a lifetime, they must submit to one another to conquer their own Desperate Desires.

Sensually spiced with a heavy dose of passion, this romantic bestseller comes complete with a memorable cast of characters. You won’t want to put this one down!
Look for my review on May 11.

WoW: Korval's Game by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It gives us a chance to spotlight books that we are eagerly anticipating.

In my quest to own all the Liaden Universe books in all editions, I have pre-ordered Korval's Game by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. This edition will be published on May 5. I have already read the stories more times than I can count.

Here is the product description: The Liaden Universe® series has enthralled thousands of readers, and now two of its most exciting space adventure novels are combined in one popularly-priced Omni-trade volume.

Plan B: Val Con yos’Phelium is a fugitive. The heir of Clan Korval is wanted by the covert Liaden agency known as the Department of the Interior, whose rulers have declared unofficial war against the entire clan. With only his love, Miri Robertson, by his side, Val Con plans a desperate gamble by forming an alliance with Clan Erob on the planet where Miri was born.

But Val Con’s cousin, Shan yos’Galan, can’t wait for help that may never arrive. With enemy agents closing in, he invokes Plan B—setting in motion a series of events that will have dire consequences, not only for him and his life-mate, Priscilla Mendoza, but all of Liad . . .

I Dare: On the run from the agents of the Department of the Interior, Val Con has been separated from Miri. Shan, Val Con’s cousin, and Shan’s life-mate Priscilla, continue to search for him, believing that he’s the Clan’s last hope for survival.

But the DOI is attacking Clan Korval in a more subtle fashion. Pat Rin yos’Phelium—Val’s ne’er-do-well, nearly identical cousin, gambler and shooter—is offered control of the clan. The DOI believes they can manipulate him into serving their agenda.

This is one of my favorite series of all time. I can't recommend them highly enough.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? (April 11, 2011)

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.  It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

I am still in my reading funk. After starting who knows how many books, I did manage to finish three books this week.
I read the humorous The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf by Molly Harper. I recommend it if you like humorous romances. This review will be posted on April 16.

Desperate Desires by Terri Wolfe is a novella. It is an erotic historical romance. This one was quite spicy but had its sweet moments too. I am a stop on her blog tour. She is supposed to have a guest post for me on April 13. I will be posting my review on May 11.

I also went back to my bookshelves and re-read Naked in Death by J. D. Robb. This is the first book in a series that I love and which has grown to 32 books and a bunch of novellas. I loved going back to revisit old friends. My review will be posted on April 14.

I also read two stories from Eileen Wilks' website. The first was a deleted scene from the book Night Season. In this scene Cullen Seaborne is meeting with a Catholic priest for a counseling session prior to his wedding to Cynna. He discussed his religious philosophy and convinces the priest that he is ready to marry Cynna. The second was a short story entitled "Cyncerely Yours" which is about the wedding of Cynna and Cullen. The wedding goes really well except for the ghost who wants forgiveness and the dragon who wants his gold dust back. Both stories were really entertaining glimpses into the World of the Lupi. This is a great series but the books are not published frequently enough. I recommend it highly.

I am currently reading:
The Vampire Narcise by Colleen Gleason which I have on my Kindle from NetGalley. It is the third in her Regency vampires series and tells the story of Narcise who has been a prisoner of her brother the evil Cezar Moldavi.

I am also reading The Perfect Play by Jaci Burton because I was in the mood for a sports romance and had this one sitting on my stack of TBR books. I loved the cover.

Next week:

I just don't know what I'll be reading next. I have tons of books that I should be reading but I need something to grab me.

What are your plans?

In My Mailbox (April 10, 2011)

The weekly In My Mailbox post is hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren. It is fun to see what everyone else gets in their mailboxes, shopping bags, and library visits. Click on the link to The Story Siren's site to see the rules and join in the fun.

I guarantee that your TBR pile will grow when you see all the wonderful books everyone gets. You will discover lots of great blogs and lots of books that you won't be able to live without.

I got these free ones for my Kindle:
Heart of the Sea is an Others story by Christine Warren

Elisha's Bones by Don Hoesel is a thriller that sounds a lot like The DaVinci Code or The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown.

Immortal by V. K. Forrest is a vampire story.

I also bought a few books this week:
Navarro's Promise by Lora Leigh is a Breed story.

Backstage Pass by Olivia Cunning and Rock Hard by Olivia Cunning were reviewed glowingly on a blog I follow. I bought these for my Kindle and just a couple of days later one of them was offered as a free book. I hope they are good.

That was my mailbox this week. What did you get?

Review: How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf by Molly Harper

How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf
Author: Molly Harper
Publication: Pocket (February 22, 2011)

Description: Northern Exposure
Even in Grundy, Alaska, it’s unusual to find a naked guy with a bear trap clamped to his ankle on your porch. But when said guy turns into a wolf, recent southern transplant Mo Wenstein has no difficulty identifying the problem. Her surly neighbor Cooper Graham—who has been openly critical of Mo’s ability to adapt to life in Alaska—has trouble of his own. Werewolf trouble.

For Cooper, an Alpha in self-imposed exile from his dysfunctional pack, it’s love at first sniff when it comes to Mo. But Cooper has an even more pressing concern on his mind. Several people around Grundy have been the victims of wolf attacks, and since Cooper has no memory of what he gets up to while in werewolf form, he’s worried that he might be the violent canine in question.

If a wolf cries wolf, it makes sense to listen, yet Mo is convinced that Cooper is not the culprit. Except if he’s not responsible, then who is? And when a werewolf falls head over haunches in love with you, what are you supposed to do anyway? The rules of dating just got a whole lot more complicated. . . .

My Thoughts: This was a fun romance. I loved Mo's snarky attitude and great quips. Mo flees Mississippi to get away from her beloved by interfering parents. They are old-style hippies. Her mother is constantly dropping in, reading her mail, and clearing out processed food from her cupboards. Mo ends up in Grundy, Alaska where the local bachelors are eager to accept her with open arms. All the bachelors except Cooper are falling all over her to make her love Alaska. Naturally, it is Cooper who is most attractive to her.

Mo quickly feels at home cooking in the local bar and making friends. She loves the quiet house she is renting even though she frequently sees a black wolf prowling around. When she is attacked by someone wanting to rob the bar, the black wolf rescues her.  When Cooper shows up on her porch with a bear trap around her ankle, she is forced to recognize that he is the black wolf.

Cooper has left home and his position as his pack alpha because he was forced to do something that made him feel guilty. He has been a surly presence in Grundy for quite a while. However, he and Mo hit it off and have a great relationship. At least, they do until a wolf starts attacking hikers and town folk and Cooper is afraid it is him.

This was a wonderful romance. I recommend it to those who like light, humorous romances. I can't wait to read The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf because it is the story of Cooper's sister Maggie.

Don’t dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.

I just picked up How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf by Molly Harper. I was looking for a light and funny read after reading a few "high intensity" books. The cover, at least, is indicating that it is a lighter read.

Beginning:
When a naked man shows up on your doorstep with a bear trap clamped around his ankle, it's best just to do what he asks.
Page 56, Sentence 5:
Kara's mother used to call us the Tortoise and the Hare. We moved at different speeds, but we usually arrived at the same place eventually. Kara was the tiny blond dynamo. I was the freakishly tall observer.

Review: Breaking the Rules by Suzanne Brockmann

Breaking the Rules
Author: Suzanne Brockmann
Publication: Ballantine Books (March 22, 2011)

Description: Izzy Zanella wasn’t looking for another reason to butt heads with his Navy SEAL teammate, and nemesis, Danny Gillman. But then he met Danny’s beautiful younger sister, Eden. When she needed it most, he offered her a place to stay, a shoulder to cry on—and more. And when she got pregnant with another man’s child, he offered her marriage. But Eden’s devastating miscarriage shattered their life together—and made the intense bad blood between Izzy and Danny even worse.

Now Eden’s back, and she’s on a mission to rescue her teen brother, Ben, from their abusive stepfather. Even if she and Izzy can prove that their broken marriage is still in one piece, winning legal custody of Ben is a long shot. But they’re not alone: Danny and his girlfriend, Jenn, offer to help, and he and Izzy agree to bury the past and fight for Ben’s future.

As they plan their strategy, Izzy and Eden grapple with the raw passion that still crackles between them—while Danny and Jenn confront new depths in their own rocky relationship. But events take a terrifying turn after Ben befriends a girl fleeing a child prostitution ring. When the young runaway seeks refuge with Eden and Izzy, her pursuers kidnap Ben—and a deadly standoff begins. Now they must all pull together like never before and strike back, swift and hard, to protect their unconventional little family and everything they hold most precious.

My Thoughts: This sixteenth story in the Troubleshooters series focuses on Izzy Zanella and Danny Gilman. It is action packed romantic suspense. It is hard to know what to say about this complex book. The story about Neesha being a child prostitute is heartbreaking.

The relationship between Zanella and Gilman has been personally adversarial throughout the whole series. They just rub each other the wrong way. While they respect each other's competence as SEALs and work well as teammates, they don't have compatible personalities. It doesn't help their relationship when Zanella falls in love with and marries Danny's younger sister Eden. Both Zanella and Gilman has romantic pasts of the "love em and leave em" variety. But now they have met women they don't want to leave and have to convince them that they are there to stay.

The Gilman family relationships make up a lot of the suspense and tension in this story. The goal in this one is to rescue Eden and Danny's younger brother Ben from his abusive stepfather. Ben is diabetic, gay and fifteen. The stepfather who is a drug using alcoholic who has found religion. In his eyes, being gay is wrong and he is determined to "cure" his son by sending him to an abusive retraining center run by his church. Eden and Danny are determined to save Ben and get him away. Eden and Danny don't have a good relationship either. Danny objects to a lot of the choices that Eden has made in her life. He thinks she is an immoral user. Eden is hurt by Danny's opinion.

Something quite different about this romance is that all of the characters are from the lower middle class. Money and money worries are on their minds too as they try to solve their problems. Danny has always sent the bulk of his pay home to his mother to take care of his younger brother. She and her husband have mostly used it to drink and drug themselves. Ben's diabetes and the need to house and shelter him will stretch Danny's budget. Eden has taken any job she can to try to support herself. She has found work as a stripper that pays well but doesn't help her self image and doesn't help in their quest to gain custody of Ben.

The romance and the romantic misunderstandings in this one were also intense. Zanella and Eden each love the other but the relationship lacks trust. They aren't sure they can depend on each other. Throughout this story they are trying to get to know and trust each other. Danny and Jenn are also working on their relationship. Jenn is very good for Danny because she brings stability to him. She is a quiet voice of reason who can help Danny forge new relationships with his sister and Zanella.

I thought this was an excellent entry into the Troubleshooters series. If you like action-packed romantic suspense, this may be the book for you. I think it would be a richer experience for those who have read other stories in the Troubleshooters series.

Favorite Quote:
So he explained. "My point," he said, "is that if you said to me, Izzy, I just love the power that I feel when I take my clothes off up on that stage. I love it more than words can express, well, then I'd say that since you love doing it, and if you're working in a place where you're not being pressured to do more than dance, if your're careful of your safety when you approach and leave the club..." He shrugged. "You should go for it. But if you come home from work feeling the need to scour your entire body with bleach? You might want to set a limit. Plan for an end date. Do this for a year or two or even ten, learn how to invest those wads of money you earn, and then retire and never do it again."
I bought this book from Amazon because Brockmann is an auto-buy for me. It is available in multiple formats - hardcover, ebook, audiobook.
