Review: Ten Ways to Be Adored When Landing a Lord by Sarah MacLean

Ten Ways to Be Adored When Landing a Lord
Author: Sarah MacLean
Publication: Avon; Original edition (October 26, 2010)

Description: Since being named “London’s Lord to Land” by a popular ladies’ magazine, Nicholas St. John has been relentlessly pursued by every matrimony-minded female in the ton. So when an opportunity to escape fashionable society presents itself, he eagerly jumps—only to land in the path of the most determined, damnably delicious woman he’s ever met!

The daughter of a titled wastrel, Lady Isabel Townsend has too many secrets and too little money. Though she is used to taking care of herself quite handily, her father’s recent passing has left Isabel at sea and in need of outside help to protect her young brother’s birthright. The sinfully handsome, eminently eligible Lord Nicholas could be the very salvation she seeks.

But the lady must be wary and not do anything reckless and foolish…like falling madly, passionately in love.

My Thoughts: Lord Nicholas St. John has become the target of unmarried London ladies since he was named an eligible bachelor by a ladies' magazine. He is an antiquarian and a hunter of men. When a friend asks him to track down his runaway sister, he agrees because it is a way to get himself out of town. He isn't interested in marriage but he also can't resist a damsel in distress.

Lady Isabel is the daughter of a wastrel who has made a habit of taking in women who were in need of a place to hide and has taken in the Duke's sister. She is also recently orphaned and doesn't know how she will manage to take care of her young brother and the women in her care. She is used to being strong and being able to manage whatever life throws at her. This time, though, it might be too much.

They find each other and very reluctantly fall in love. He is trying to get over falling in love with women who need his help and she doesn't really trust any man for fear of falling into the same trap as her mother.

The ladies' magazine has given steps for landing a lord and Isabel does the opposite yet still manages to land her lord. This was a nice historical with well-drawn characters. It also had well-drawn and interesting secondary characters. While this books doesn't break any new ground in historical romances, it was a pleasant and engaging book to read.

Favorite Quote:
"Surely you were not lunging after Lady Isobel in such a manner." This from the butler, who, perfectly pressed and cravatted, lazily investigated the edge of the saber she held. Isabel did her best not to look at the empty spot on the wall from which the ancient -- and likely very dull, indeed -- sword had come.
