Book Review: Lost Souls by Kelley Armstrong

Lost Souls
Author: Kelley ArmstroCainsvilleng
Series: Cainsville
Publication: Subterranean Press (December 15, 2016)

Description: The disappearing hitchhiker is one of the hoariest urban legends, and no one knows that better than Gabriel Walsh, a lawyer who grew up on folklore and myth. When Patrick—author of books on the supernatural—brings him the case of a hitchhiking woman in white who vanished on a country road after accepting a ride from a businessman, Gabriel knows the Cainsville elder is just trying to wheedle into his good graces. But Gabriel is a man in need of a mystery, one that will get him back into someone else’s good graces. His investigator, Olivia Taylor-Jones, has blown town supposedly on a simple vacation. But when she left there was a rift between them and...he misses her.

Gabriel is well aware the only thing Olivia loves more than a good mystery is a weird one, and this hitchhiker case more than fits the bill. As Gabriel digs into the case, though, he’s forced to face ghosts of his own and admit that the woman in white isn’t the only one who has lost her way.

With Lost Souls, New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong weaves an unmissable novella-length tale connected to her fan-favorite Cainsville series.

My Thoughts: When Patrick comes to Gabriel with a ghost story, Gabriel isn't really interested. Except he needs a mystery to get back into Olivia's good graces. Gabriel doesn't interact well with others and is pretty good at self-sabotage in his relationship with Olivia.

Even though the disappearing hitchhiker is a very common urban legend, something seems different with this case. Sightings of her have been common in the Chicago area for more than forty years. However, something seems to have changed in the last two years and the ghost now seems more vengeful than sad. There have been a number of suicides recently after encounters with her.

Gabriel is trying to track down those who have seen the mysterious hitchhiker and Patrick is wondering if he didn't start something he really can't control when he set Gabriel this task. Especially since his plan to get closer to Gabriel in order to get to know his son aren't working the way he had hoped.

And Olivia is also working on the case independently of Gabriel who wants her help but can't bring himself to ask for it. The case moves from a simple ghost story to actions of some vengeful fae before it ends and Gabriel has to confront some of the things from his past that have turned him into the man he is today.

This was entertaining and engaging. I enjoyed watching Olivia and Gabriel's relationship develop.

"So Ghost Christine doesn't care about getting home anymore. She's turned her afterlife attention to playing therapist-from-hell. The ultimate motivational speaker. You have forty-eight hours to fix your life, or you have to take your life. That's some seriously tough love."
I bought this one. You can buy your copy here.
