It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (Nov. 11, 2019)

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.  It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

I will be combining my YA and adult reading and purchases on this one weekly roundup.

Other Than Reading...

This week looks like the beginning of a very long winter. The weather has been cold and gray. Snow has fallen a couple of times. We don't seem to be making very much solar power each day.

Our big news this week is that my brother has finally received a bill for his heart event that began on September 17. He was in the hospital from Sept. 17 - Sept. 23, had a triple bypass, spent a few days in cardiac intensive care, has had various follow-up appointments, and is in the middle of 36 sessions of cardio rehab. The total bill was a hair over $123,000 which is a huge amount but not too surprising. His part looks to be $225 which is astonishing. He was thinking that it was going to be many thousands of dollars. I was thinking that too, but he's underemployed and falls under a Minnesota program that provides income-based health insurance. He had no idea how good the insurance was because he hadn't been to a doctor for almost 20 years. We are both breathing a big sigh of relief.

In other news, I got a new cookbook for my Kindle this week and have already read the whole thing and highlighted recipes we want to try. We had the Egg Foo Young last night which also included Homemade Soy Sauce and really enjoyed it. Beef Stew is coming up tomorrow. It's time to look for winter hardy type recipes! Of course, reading most of a 500+ page cookbook didn't leave much time for reading anything else.

Read Last Week

If you can't wait until the review shows up on my blog, reviews are posted to LibraryThing and Goodreads as soon as I write them (usually right after I finish reading a book.)

  • Trust Me by Hank Phillippi Ryan (Mine) - This was a very intense thriller. I enjoyed trying to find out what was happening. My review will be posted on Nov. 23.
  • Just Watch Me by Jeff Lindsay (Review; Dec. 3) - This was a fast-paced and rather brutal heist story. The main character - thief and master of disguises - and the FBI Agent who was trying to find him were both intriguing characters. My review will be posted on Nov. 26.
  • Dangerous Alliance by Jennieke Cohen (YA Review; Dec. 3) - This was a romance and a mystery set in the Regency period. I liked that it concentrated on the mystery. My review will be posted on Nov. 27.

Currently

  • Thin Ice by Paige Shelton (Review; Dec. 3)

  1. I saw that Kelly Armstrong novel on NetGalley too. I haven't read too many of her books but I mean to. I'm glad you liked it anyway :) Happy Remembrance Day!

  6. That winter weather is headed here tomorrow! Today was 62 and sunny (and perfect!) - tomorrow we are supposed to get a mix of rain and ice, and lows in the 10's Wednesday! brrr.... That is exceptionally cold and early for Delaware (and after a fall that stayed into the 90's into Oct).

I rarely "read" a cookbook, but I agree it is the season for comfort food! We had a yummy Chinese Hot Pot of Beef yesterday (sort of like a Chinese beef stew) - yum! And even better...leftovers tonight so no cooking!

Enjoy your books this week...and stay warm!

  7. Ohhh! It sounds so cold there. I don’t know how you do it. Tonight it will get down in the 40s and we are hunkering down.

Your new cookbook sounds wonderful. My sister shared her recipe for beef bourgaugnon with me, and I plan to make it this week. It’s a beef stew, and it’s completely delicious.

I’m really happy for your brother about his medical bill. What a relief for him and you.

    Have a good week!

  8. Stay warm...we are to get snow tonight.

    Great news for your brother.

WHISPER OF BONES and BRED IN THE BONE look like twins. :)

    Have a great week, Kathy.

  9. Health Insurance - now that one sounds really good and so good it covers your brother well. I saw your Madness for Sunshine review on GR. So looking forward to reading the book. It will be interesting to see if it gets much play in our bookshops, usually her paranormals are put away on a bottom shelf somewhere.

  11. It is looking distressingly like winter here too. And good news on the hospital bill! I was nervously awaiting mine too and it turned out to not be too bad, amazingly.

I'll have to look at Thin Ice. That looks pretty good.
