Friday Memes: Sky Dragons by Anne McCaffrey

Happy Friday everybody!
Book Beginnings on Friday is now hosted by Rose City Reader. The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice. Check out the links above for the rules and for the posts of the participants each week. Don’t dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.

Beginning:
This was not how it happened.
Friday 56:
"Lead on, green rider!" J'keren said with a mock bow.

"Did you bring any klah bark?" K'dan asked. "I'm pretty certain we're almost out."
I just have a couple more of McCaffrey's Pern novels to read before I have finally finished a series I started reading in 1968. This week I'm reading Sky Dragons by Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey. Here is the description from Amazon:
Scores of dragons are dead after plague swept across the world of Pern, and now the Weyrs are struggling to rebuild before Threadfall destroys everything—and everyone—left alive. Their best hope lies with a group of new dragonriders who have volunteered to brave the dangers of an unexplored island populated by vicious wild felines and voracious tunnel-snakes to create a safe home for their young dragons, whose offspring will hopefully replenish Pern’s decimated population. But their leader, Xhinna, the first female rider of a blue dragon, faces an uphill battle to win the respect of her peers, especially after tragedy leaves the new colony reeling. The way forward seems to lie with the awesome ability of the dragons to travel through time. But that power comes with risks: By venturing into the past, Xhinna may jeopardize the very future she has sworn to save.

Book Review: Fire Touched by Patricia Briggs

Fire Touched
Author: Patricia Briggs
Series: Mercy Thompson (Book 9)
Publication: Ace (March 8, 2016)

Description: Tensions between the fae and humans are coming to a head. And when coyote shapeshifter Mercy and her Alpha werewolf mate, Adam, are called upon to stop a rampaging troll, they find themselves with something that could be used to make the fae back down and forestall out-and-out war: a human child stolen long ago by the fae.

Defying the most powerful werewolf in the country, the humans, and the fae, Mercy, Adam, and their pack choose to protect the boy no matter what the cost. But who will protect them from a boy who is fire touched?

My Thoughts: Tensions are rising in the Tri-Cities. The fae have retreated to their hidden reservations but have let very dangerous fae escape. Humans are wondering what they will do next.

Mercy and Adam come to be at odds with the Marrok when they provide a safe haven for a young human boy who has escaped from Underhill. He spent a long time there and was given some powers to help him cope. But now Underhill is unhappy and wants him back and a variety of fae, all with their own agendas, want to give him back.

Mercy and Adam are unwilling to give this person, who looks like a child, into a situation that he fears. The Grey Lords have different plans. As a matter of fact, many different factions of Grey Lords all seem to have different plans. Adam and Mercy have to deal with the ones who have plans that will bring harm to humans or werewolves.

Mercy gets to spend time with a number of the fae that she knows and likes and a few that she can actually trust.

This story was more about political maneuvering than it was about battles though there were a couple of those two. And Mercy did have a few occasions when she could let her snarky side out.

Fans of the series won't want to miss this one.

Favorite Quote:
There was a long pause. "I made her feel unsafe," he said.

I shook my head. "Not really. She had no trouble defending herself—and she knew there was a houseful of people who would make sure she was safe. What you did was tell her that you had no intention of letting her be safe with you."
I bought this one. You can buy your copy here.

Beginning:
I sat up in bed, a feeling of urgency gripping my stomach in iron claws.
Friday 56:
The troll moved into my best target range. I took a step toward them, aimed, and shot the magazine of my gun empty as fast as I could pull the trigger. I didn't hit Adam.
This week I am featuring Fire Touched by Patricia Briggs. This is the latest book in her Mercy Thomson urban fantasy series. Here is the description from Amazon:

Book Review: The Murder of Mary Russell by Laurie R. King

The Murder of Mary Russell
Author: Laurie R. King
Series: Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes (Book 10)
Publication: Bantam (April 5, 2016)

Description: Laurie R. King’s bestselling Mary Russell–Sherlock Holmes series weaves rich historical detail and provocative themes with intriguing characters and enthralling suspense. Russell and Holmes have become one of modern literature’s most beloved teams. But does this adventure end it all?

Mary Russell is used to dark secrets—her own, and those of her famous partner and husband, Sherlock Holmes. Trust is a thing slowly given, but over the course of a decade together, the two have forged an indissoluble bond.

And what of the other person to whom Mary Russell has opened her heart: the couple’s longtime housekeeper, Mrs. Hudson? Russell’s faith and affection are suddenly shattered when a man arrives on the doorstep claiming to be Mrs. Hudson’s son.

What Samuel Hudson tells Russell cannot possibly be true, yet she believes him—as surely as she believes the threat of the gun in his hand. In a devastating instant, everything changes. And when the scene is discovered—a pool of blood on the floor, the smell of gunpowder in the air—the most shocking revelation of all is that the grim clues point directly to Clara Hudson.

Or rather to Clarissa, the woman she was before Baker Street.

The key to Russell’s sacrifice lies in Mrs. Hudson’s past. To uncover the truth, a frantic Sherlock Holmes must put aside his anguish and push deep into his housekeeper’s secrets—to a time before her disguise was assumed, before her crimes were buried away.

There is death here, and murder, and trust betrayed.

And nothing will ever be the same.

My Thoughts: This mystery arises out of housekeeper Mrs. Clara Hudson's past and illuminates that past for us as readers and gives glimpses of it to Mary. It also gives us fascinating glimpses of a young Sherlock Holmes and the very complicated relationship he has with Mrs. Hudson.

It begins with Mary receiving an unexpected visitor - Mr. Samuel Hudson - who has arrived from Australia looking for his mother with some sort of revenge in mind. It goes back in time to explore events chronicled by Dr. Watson in "The Adventures of the Gloria Scott."

The book has mutiny, murders, and betrayals of all sorts. I really liked getting to know Mrs. Hudson in a very different way than the quiet housekeeper who has been a background figure in all of the books and stories that have come before. I admire her for her survival skills and for her resiliency.

Fans of the Sherlock Holmes books will enjoy this new look at a very familiar character.

Favorite Quote:
Of all the mysteries that are love, maternal love may be the most basic. My own mother had died when I was fourteen. A few months later, with the raw instincts of a barnyard chick imprinting its affections on the first available surrogate, my bereft heart had claimed Mrs. Hudson for its own. I had known her for ten years now, lived with her for more than four, and she was as close to a mother as I would ever have again.
I bought this one for my Kindle. You can buy your copy here.

Book Review: Marked in Flesh by Anne Bishop

Marked in Flesh
Author: Anne Bishop
Series: A Novel of the Others (Book 4)
Publication: Roc (March 8, 2016)

Description: For centuries, the Others and humans have lived side by side in uneasy peace. But when humankind oversteps its bounds, the Others will have to decide how much humanity they’re willing to tolerate—both within themselves and within their community...

Since the Others allied themselves with the cassandra sangue, the fragile yet powerful human blood prophets who were being exploited by their own kind, the delicate dynamic between humans and Others changed. Some, like Simon Wolfgard, wolf shifter and leader of the Lakeside Courtyard, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn, see the new, closer companionship as beneficial—both personally and practically.

But not everyone is convinced. A group of radical humans is seeking to usurp land through a series of violent attacks on the Others. What they don’t realize is that there are older and more dangerous forces than shifters and vampires protecting the land that belongs to the Others—and those forces are willing to do whatever is necessary to protect what is theirs...

My Thoughts: In this story, Humans First and Last think that they are ready to take over lands held by the terra indigene - the Others - and find that they have bitten off much more than they can chew from someone who is more that capable of biting back.

The story begins with Simon receiving a message from the Elders that he will have to decide how much human to keep. Naturally, he goes to Meg to help him decide. Meg is also busy trying to find a way to deal with prophecies without having to cut herself. The cutting is an addiction that creates a euphoria that she craves. She is experimenting with a variety of fortune telling cards. She is doing this not only for herself but for the other cassandra sangue who are living in various parts of Thaisia and who are looking to Meg for guidance.

Meanwhile, HFL policies and sabotages are growing more common and more frequent. The human pack inside the Courtyard is growing as those who are branded "wolf lovers" are taking refuge there. This is a worry to Simon who fears that there won't be enough resources to take care of all of them. But saying no to Meg when she wants to offer protection to someone else is not something Simon can do.

It is interesting watching those in the know try to figure out what they have to have if society ceases to exist and each place is on its own and in danger from the Elders. It was also fascinating to see some of those previously unseen Elders and see that the terra indigene, who are so frightening to humans, have things that frighten them too.

I love the growing relationship between Meg and Simon. But I think what I like best about this series is the portrayal of the Others which is so different than most paranormal series. These are humans who can sometimes put on a wolf suit. These are wolves who clearly think differently than humans do. I can't wait for ETCHED IN BONE coming in 2017.

Favorite Quote:
"What are you going to call them?" Meg asked.
"Lunch?" Simon offered.
The female pack gave him a look that made him think running away would be a good idea, if he wasn't the leader and couldn't back down.
I bought this one. You can buy your copy here.

The sweet blood has changed things. You have changed because of her. We are intrigued by the humans who have gathered around your Courtyard, so we will give you some time to decide how much human the terra indigene will keep.
Friday 56:
Jesse Walker pushed at a lock of gray hair that had escaped the hairclip and looked up from her list as Shelley Bookman, the community's librarian, rushed into the general store.
This week I am featuring Marked in Flesh by Anne Bishop. This is the fourth book in this excellent fantasy series. Here is the description from Amazon:

Spotlight: The Fall of Neskaya by Marion Zimmer Bradley

I have decided that 2016 is the year when I take a look at books on my TBR mountain and read them or donate them. I'm starting with the books that have been on the stack the longest.

Hopefully by the end of 2016, my TBR mountain will be only a foothill.

I'm turning the spotlight on The Fall of Neskaya by Marion Zimmer Bradley this week. I've had it on the stack since I began my LibraryThing account in February of 2008.

Here is the description from Amazon:
The Fall of Neskaya, Book One of the Clingfire Trilogy, marks the legendary author's final return to Darkover before her death. Set in the tumultuous era of The Hundred Kingdoms, a terrible time of strife and war, this unique fantasy world is divided into a mutlitude of small belligerent domains vying for power and land. One ambitious and corrupt tyrant will stop at nothing to control Darkover-even wield the terrifying weapons of the matrix.
I think I've read all of the Darkover books by Marion Zimmer Bradley but I haven't read this series that she wrote with Deborah J. Ross. Somehow this one got lost on my TBR mountain.

Have you read this one?

Book Review: Midnight Marked by Chloe Neill

Midnight Marked
Author: Chloe Neill
Series: Chicagoland Vampires (Book 12)
Publication: NAL (March 1, 2016)

Description: As the Chicagoland Vampires series continues, Merit and Ethan find themselves in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, where winning may require the ultimate sacrifice...

A vampire’s grudges don’t stay dead long...

Merit is one of Chicago's most skilled vampire warriors; these days, she doesn't scare easily. But she and Master vampire Ethan have made a new and powerful enemy, and he won't give up until he owns the Windy City.

With his last plan thwarted, he's more determined than ever to watch Cadogan burn. Ethan has put the House's vampires on high alert, but their enemy will stop at nothing, including pitting supernatural against supernatural...

In this deadly game of cat-and-mouse, the stakes are life or death—and winning might mean sacrificing everything...

My Thoughts: This review will likely contain spoilers for earlier books in this long-running series.

Merit and Ethan are dealing with Adrien Reed who wants to take over Chicago. Reed is a crimelord but to many of the people in Chicago is a person to be admired, a benefactor noted for his good deeds and business acumen. Merit and Ethan know that he has an agenda that won't be good for the city and especially bad for any supernaturals who live in it.

After stumbling over a murder on their way to a Cubs' night game, they find evidence of some sort of alchemical formula. Mallory, Paige and Catcher assist in trying to translate it to find out what the secret alchemist is trying to accomplish. Soon they learn that there are more pieces of the formula scattered around Chicago. Merit also confronts one of her past enemies in this one.

I love the relationship between Ethan and Merit. They are both strong people which means that they butt heads frequently because each is so determined to protect the other and keep them from harm.

I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Favorite Quote:
Mallory nodded. "He gave you an alphapology."

"What now?"

"An alphapology. The apology made by the alpha male, which isn't really an apology, but more a reason for insane behavior. Catcher does it all the damn time. Drives me up the wall."

Book Review: Second Grave on the Left by Darynda Jones

Second Grave on the Left
Author: Darynda Jones
Series: Charley Davidson Series (Book 2)
Publication: St. Martin's Paperbacks; Reprint edition (April 24, 2012)

Description: If you hang around with dead people, life can deliver a whole world of trouble.

Take it from Charley Davidson, part-time P.I. and full-time Grim Reaper. The deceased find her very sparkly. Demons find her irresistible. And one entity in particular wants to seduce her in every way possible…

When Charley and Cookie, her best friend slash receptionist, have to track down a missing woman, the case is not quite as open and shut as they anticipate. Meanwhile, Reyes Alexander Farrow (otherwise known as the Son of Satan. Yes. Literally.) has left his corporeal body because he's being tortured by demons who want to lure Charley closer. But Reyes can't let that happen. Because if the demons get to Charley, they'll have a portal to heaven. And if they have a portal to heaven…well, let's just say it wouldn't be pretty.

Can Charley handle hot nights with Reyes and even hotter days tracking down a missing woman? Can she keep those she loves out of harm's way? And is there enough coffee and chocolate in the world to fuel her as she does?

My Thoughts: This second book in the Charley Davidson series was as funny and chaotic as the first. Charlie is working on a case for her best friend/receptionist Cookie. Her best friend Mimi is missing. She is also trying to find out about the dead guy in Cookie's car trunk. But, most of all, she is trying to find Reyes body before he dies. Reyes is determined to let his human body die; Charley doesn't want that to happen. And, also, Charley's father is being threatened by someone who wants to kill him or, at least, kill his family.

All of those cases intertwine in this investigation. Charley is her usual fear-free self. She doesn't seem to have any sense of self-preservation as she confronts criminals of all sorts of descriptions on her quest to find Mimi and save Reyes.

This book was laugh out loud funny which is unusual in the urban fantasy genre. I enjoyed every minute of this story and can't wait to read more of Charley's adventures.

Favorite Quote:
She shook her head, then took off again, and I found myself struggling to keep up with her in my bunny slippers. With a sigh, I realized I was getting way too much exercise. I'd just have to counter it later with cake.
I bought this book. You can buy your copy here.

Teaser:
I reached past the curtain for a towel and noticed droplets of crimson sliding down my arm. I looked back up at a dark red circle on my ceiling, slowly spreading like the bloodstain of someone who was still bleeding. Before I had time to say "What the f—," someone fell through. Someone large. And heavy. And he landed pretty much right on top of me.
This week my teaser comes from Second Grave on the Left by Darynda Jones. It is the 2nd in the Charley Davidson series. Here is the description from Amazon:

Book Review: Of Noble Family by Mary Robinette Kowal

Of Noble Family
Author: Mary Robinette Kowal
Series: Glamourist Histories (Book 5)
Publication: Tor Books (April 28, 2015)

Description: Jane and Vincent have finally gotten some much-needed rest after their adventures in Italy when Vincent receives word that his estranged father has passed away on one of his properties in the West Indies. His brother, who manages the estate, is overwhelmed, and no one else in his family can go. Grudgingly, out of filial duty the couple decide to go.

The sea voyage is long and Jane spends enough time unable to perform glamour that towards the end of the trip she discovers that she is with child. They are overjoyed, but when they finally arrive at the estate to complete what they expect to be routine legal tasks, they realize that nearly everything they came expecting to find had been a lie. Also, the entire estate is in disarray, with horrifying conditions and tensions with the local slave population so high that they are close to revolt.

Jane and Vincent's sense of peril is screaming out for them to flee, but Vincent cannot stand to leave an estate connected with his family in such a condition. They have survived many grand and terrifying adventures in their time, but this one will test their skills and wits more than any they have ever encountered before, this time with a new life hanging in the balance. Mary Robinette Kowal's Of Noble Family is the final book of the acclaimed Glamourist Histories.

My Thoughts: This final volume in the Glamourist Histories sees Jane and Vincent travel to Antigua to settle his father's estate. Upon arrival they learn that Lord Verbery is not dead though he did suffer a stroke. He is in hiding to avoid being arrested. He has support from a number of people who are keeping him hidden. He is also not above the use of blackmail and other threats.

Jane and Vincent first want to leave immediately but Jane is pregnant and not doing well. It doesn't help that Verbery's doctor almost bleeds her to death as a way of keeping her on the island. Meanwhile, they are also dealing with an overseer who is unnecessarily brutal to the slaves and who has Lord Verbery's blessing for his actions. They are also surprised that the man in charge of the household is Lord Verbery's natural son who is being forced to do what the Earl demands because of threats to sell the rest of his family away.

While Jane is not able to do glamour while being pregnant, she spends a lot of time of the slaves who have their own forms of glamour. Jane is determined to write a book about the different traditions of glamour. She gets to learn a lot about the lives of slaves on the plantation as she meets with a number who can do glamour. She also calls on their help when she and Vincent are commissioned to create the glamour to decorate the ballroom for an annual charity ball.

I loved the relationship between Jane and Vincent. He has such a hard time because knowing that his father is alive and being forced to spend time with him brings back so many of the memories of the abuse he suffered at his father's hands as a boy. It also raises his fear that he is too like his father to be a good father to his child.

This story had a huge amount  of intensity both because of the setting and because of the threats to Jane's life and health. I couldn't put it down.

Favorite Quote:
She sighed to cover her agitation. "You are insufferable."

"I prefer 'inscrutable.'" He smiles, softening a little at her teasing tone, and because she allowed the change of topic.

"Inexplicable would be more accurate."

"Inconceivable!"

She rested her hand on her ever-increasing stomach. "Not any more."

He laughed and kissed her on the forehead. "I do not think that word means what you think it means."

This week I am spotlighting Of Noble Family by Mary Robinette Kowal. This is the fifth book in the author's Glamourist Histories. I discovered the series this past summer and have become sort of obsessed with them. Here is the description from Amazon:

Book Review: The Witch with No Name by Kim Harrison

The Witch with No Name
Author: Kim Harrison
Series: Hollows (Book 13)
Publication: Harper Voyager; Reprint edition (September 9, 2014)

Description: It’s Rachel Morgan’s ultimate adventure . . . and anything can happen in this final book in the New York Times bestselling Hollows series.

Rachel Morgan has come a long way from her early days as an inexperienced bounty hunter. She’s faced vampires and werewolves, banshees, witches, and soul-eating demons. She’s crossed worlds, channeled gods, and accepted her place as a day-walking demon. She’s lost friends and lovers and family, and an old enemy has unexpectedly become something much more.

But power demands responsibility, and world-changers must always pay a price. Rachel has known that this day would come—and now it is here.

To save Ivy’s soul and the rest of the living vampires, to keep the demonic ever after and our own world from destruction, Rachel Morgan will risk everything. . . .

My Thoughts: As usual, Rachel has tons of problems to solve before she can get to her happy ending in this final book of the Hollows series. The elves want to kill the vampires and the demons. The old vampires want to get their souls back despite the fact that regaining their souls would make them walk into the sun. The Goddess is searching for Rachel and wants to kill her. She loves Trent but feels that she isn't a positive in his life. You know, typical problems ranging from the personal to the world destroying.

One of Rachel's more personal problems has to do with the relationship between Ivy and Nina. They are in love but Nina is still being controlled by an old vampire named Felix who is going insane. Cormel has demanded that Rachel find a way to reunite vampires with their lost souls. Rachel discovers that the souls are in the Ever After but finding them and reinserting them causes more problems than it solves.

Then there is Landon who convinces the vampires that he can free vampire souls from the Ever After but doesn't mention that his technique will also free the demons and destroy the Ever After and end all magic on Earth.

This book was packed with excitement as it ties up the loose threads from earlier books in the series. I breathed a sigh of relief when I got the end and think other long-time readers will feel the same way. I enjoyed this series and really enjoyed the place where Rachel ended up when the story was over.

Favorite Quote:
But what made my steps slow as I walked back to my car was knowing that Cormel knew I was right, otherwise he would've gone to find his soul. He knew I was right, but he wanted me to be wrong so badly that he was ignoring it.

Tomorrow was going to be one hell of a day.
I bought this book. You can buy your copy here.

The relief that he came to help me in the ever-after had almost hurt, even if he'd risked his life and an already failing reputation. There hadn't been a wisp of regret in him, and I shoved the coming heartache down because even though he meshed with my life perfectly, I did not mesh with his.

Book Review: Mind Magic by Eileen Wilks

Mind Magic
Author: Eileen Wilks
Series: A Novel of the Lupi (Book 12)
Publication: Berkley (November 3, 2015)

Description: FBI agent Lily Yu’s mind is a dangerous place to be in the latest Novel of the Lupi…

Thanks to the mindspeech lessons she’s receiving from the black dragon, Lily is temporarily benched from Unit Twelve—until her brain acclimates and the risk of total burnout passes. At least she has her new husband, lupi Rule Turner, to keep her occupied.

But when her mentor calls in a favor and sends Lily to a murder scene, she’s suddenly back on active status—despite the hallucinations she can’t keep at bay.  With one touch, Lily knows the man was killed by magic, but her senses don’t warn her how far the conspiracy goes…

A shadowy force within the government wants to take Unit Twelve down, and they don't mind killing to achieve their goal. With none of her usual resources, Lily is up against impossible odds--because with her mind in disarray, she can’t trust anything she sees.

My Thoughts: Lily Yu is on sick leave because she is learning to mindspeak and is currently plagued with hallucinations until her brain makes some adjustments. Most troubling to both her and Rule is that she is also having trouble with her mate sense. Neither one can pinpoint the other's location which is especially troubling to Rule. However, before she can make her adjustments, Ruben sends her to a small Ohio town because of a premonition.

Rule is forced to stay in Washington, DC, because of another premonition. Thus when he is arrested on suspicion of having child porn, Lily isn't there. And, by the time his lawyer gets him out of jail, Lily has disappeared. Despite being under house arrest with a monitor on his ankle, Rule is determined to get to Ohio and find his missing mate.

Meanwhile, Lily and the dying werewolf who insisted on going with her are being kept under a magically induced sleep which Lily had thought was impossible since she's generally immune to magic. She had been kidnapped by brownies to help the dragon who is missing from Washington, DC, with a major problem.

A good part of this story is told by Demi who is seventeen, has Asperger's. and is a hacker genius. We learn that she is an orphan who was taken in by Mr. Smith and placed in his home for Gifted children. Demi is also a touch sensitive who identified other Gifted children for Mr. Smith. However, she went away to college at sixteen and, when she returned to the home, she learned that Mr. Smith had been lying to her about his purpose.

Mr. Smith has now launched a campaign to discredit Ruben and his Unit 12. He is the one who is behind the false accusation against Rule since he also wants the werewolves discredited, hunted, and destroyed. Mr. Smith considers himself a patriot who has the best interests of the country in his mind and feels that he is the only one who can serve those best interests. His plan puts the Dragon Accord in danger and he simply doesn't realize how powerful the dragons are and how necessary they are to the smooth running of the world.

This was a very good episode in the series. We learned lots of interesting new things about dragons. We also saw Lily learn a new skill. I especially enjoyed the portions told from Rule's point of view because they showed the world as werewolves see it. The brownies were a fun new species that I don't recall from earlier books.

Fans of the series won't want to miss this great new episode.

Favorite Quote:
Three dozen brownies came skipping out of the woods, singing at the top of their lungs, some holding hands, some holding flowers. The IFVs—which did look rather like tanks, with their treads and turrets—slowed. And were quickly swarmed by brownies, who climbed up on the vehicles, tossing flowers around like flower girls at the world's oddest wedding. A few brownies hung back, pointedly aiming their phones at the scene. The Internet community would be very interested in those videos.

The brownies were singing "It's a Small World"—one of the most insidious earworms ever invented.

This week I am spotlighting Mind Magic by Eileen Wilks. This is the twelfth novel in her Lupi series. Here is the description from Amazon:

Book Review: Merciless by Lori Armstrong

Merciless
Author: Lori Armstrong
Series: Mercy Gunderson, Book 3
Publication: Touchstone; Original edition (January 8, 2013)

Description: Torn between her duties to the FBI and her need to keep her loved ones safe, former black-ops army sniper Mercy Gunderson must unleash the cold, dark, merciless killer inside her and become the predator . . . rather than the prey.

Newly minted agent Mercy Gunderson is back and ready for action— unfortunately, she’s stuck doing paperwork in an overheated government office building. But she gets more than she bargained for when she’s thrown into her first FBI murder case, working with the tribal police on the Eagle River Reservation, where the victim is the teenage niece of the recently elected tribal president. When another gruesome killing occurs during the early stages of the investigation, Mercy and fellow FBI agent Shay Turnbull are at odds about whether the crimes are connected.

Due to job confidentiality, Mercy can’t discuss her misgivings about the baffling cases with her boyfriend, Eagle River County sheriff Mason Dawson, and the couple’s home on the ranch descends into chaos when Dawson’s eleven-year-old son Lex is sent to live with them. While Mercy struggles to find a balance, hidden political agendas and old family vendettas turn ugly, masking motives and causing a rift among the tribal police, the tribal council, and the FBI. Soon, however, Mercy realizes that the deranged killer is still at large—and is playing a dangerous game with his sights set on Mercy as his next victim.

My Thoughts: Mercy Gunderson is getting used to her new job as a FBI special agent. She is also getting used to living with the sheriff Mason Dawson. Sometimes it is hard for both of them because they need to keep some parts of their job confidential from each other. Mercy's case has to do with a death on the Reservation. The niece of the Tribal Chairman has been killed in a pretty gruesome way. When Mercy starts to investigate tribal police records, she learns that there have been other suspicious deaths of women over the past few years. She goes to her contacts and family on the Reservation and finds some very conflicting information.

Her friend Rollie's live-in girlfriend is the second victim and many want to pin the murder on him. Mercy isn't buying it despite some circumstantial evidence. At home, her housekeeper and foster mother Sophie is also dealing with a daughter dying of cancer, a grandson who has visions that lead him to keep away from Mercy, and a son with big gambling debts. Mason also has to deal with his son coming to live with him and Mercy. His baby mama has had her hands full of the the eleven-year-old and is dumping him on Mason. That leads to one mixed up kid that Mercy isn't sure how to deal with.

The killer's third victim is Sophie's daughter - the one who was already dying of cancer. Mercy has her hands full investigating because she has a multitude of suspects. Is it someone who is in the loan sharking business? Is it the local drug lord? Is it her friend Rollie?

While she is still investigating, Mason is hurt in a charity bull riding event and put in a medically induced coma. This adds tons of stress but it also brings Mercy and Mason's son closer. I was completely surprised at the identity of the murderer and could totally understand Mercy's solution to the problem.

Fans of gritty mysteries with touch-as-nails heroines will enjoy the Mercy Gunderson series.

When I'd snapped out of the haze following the death of my former army buddy Anna, a death in which I'd pulled the trigger, I realized I needed more out of my life than being a retired soldier, part-time rancher, and full-time drinker. Since my skill set had been honed behind the scope of my sniper rifle, there wasn't much in the way of career opportunities in western South Dakota. I was zero for tow on the attempted-career front; I'd made a lousy bartender and had lost when I ran for my dad's old job as Eagle River County Sheriff. When the FBI had set their sights on me, it'd been a boost to my ego&Mdash;although I'd never publicly admit that.

Book Review: Dragon's Fire by Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey

Dragon's Fire
Author: Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey
Series: The Dragonriders of Pern
Publication: Del Rey; First Edition edition (July 11, 2006)

Description: Bringing fresh wonders and dangers to light in the skies of Pern, Anne McCaffrey and her son, Todd, who demonstrated his writing talents in the bestselling novels Dragon’s Kin and Dragonsblood, return with their second collaboration: a thrilling adventure of discovery and fate.

Pellar is an orphan taken in by Masterharper Zist. Though born mute, Pellar is a gifted tracker, and when Zist sets off to take over as harper for Natalon’s coal-mining camp, Pellar–along with his fire-lizard, Chitter–joins him on a secret mission of his own: to find out if reported thefts of coal are the work of the Shunned, criminals condemned to a life of wandering and hardship.

Halla is one of the children of the Shunned. Though innocent of their parents’ crimes, these children have inherited their cruel punishment. Lack of food, shelter, and clothes is their lot; hope is unknown to them. And what future would they hope for? Without a hold to call their own, there will be no protection for them when the lethal Thread inevitably falls again. Life is even tougher for Halla. Her family gone, she must fend for herself. Yet despite the brutality of her surroundings, Halla is kind and gentle, devoted to those more helpless than she.

As depraved as Halla is good, Tenim is in league with Tarik, a crooked miner from Camp Natalon, who helps him steal coal in exchange for a cut of the profit. But Tenim soon realizes there is a lot more to be made from firestone, the volatile mineral that enables the dragons of Pern to burn Thread out of the sky. Tenim doesn’t care what he has to do, or whom he has to kill, in order to corner the market.

Cristov is Tarik’s son. Dishonored by his father’s greed and treachery, the boy must make amends somehow, even if it means risking his life by mining the volatile firestone, which detonates on contact with the slightest drop of moisture.

When the last remaining firestone mine explodes in flames, a desperate race begins to find a new deposit of the deadly but essential mineral, for without it there can be no defense against Thread. But Tenim has a murderous plan to turn tragedy to his own advantage, and only Pellar, Halla, and Cristov can stop him–and ensure that there will be a future for all on the world of the Dragonriders.

My Thoughts: Pern is going through some growing pains 490 years After Landing. The common punishment for lawbreaking is Shunning of the lawbreaker and his or her family leaving roving bands of lawbreakers wandering Pern. In many cases, this means roving bands of children who have committed no crime but who are in danger of starvation.

It is also a time when mining for the firestone that the dragons need when Thread falls is at a low point. Any contact with water means the firestone explodes. When the story begins there is only one working mine.

There are quite a few viewpoint characters. All of them are quite young and are all about 10 to 12 when the story begins. Pellar is a mute orphan taken in by Harpers and trained to gather information. He is a gifted tracker and has great survival skills. Halla is a child of the Shunned is is busy caring for other young orphans. Cristov is a young miner whose father has been Shunned because he was stealing from the mine for his own profit. His father's thefts and corner-cutting caused the deaths of a number of miners. Cristov is determined to make up for his father's crimes. We also see Kindan again though his role in this story is relatively minor.

This story, along with many of the rest co-authored by Todd McCaffrey, takes place around the time of the Third Pass. The characters know that Threadfall is coming but it is still a number of years away.

The main villain of this story is Tenim who was also the child of Shunned parents and who is living up to their evil. He is a thief and murderer. His major plot in this story is to gain great wealth by cornering the market on firestone. He is willing to destroy mines and kill miners to further his plans.

I enjoyed the way the various plot threads were woven together in this one. I liked that a better solution for the Shunned was finally found because it never seemed fair to me that children should be punished for crimes their parents committed. I liked that all the Weyrleaders were not the same though I do wonder how D'gan of Telgar managed to impress his dragon. D'gan makes a fine secondary villain in this story because of his mistreatment of the Shunned and his single-minded pursuit of firestone no matter what it cost in lives.

This was another great entry into the long-running Pern series. In the internal chronology of the series this is probably book five. Published in 2006, it appears 38 years after the first published Pern book.

Favorite Quote:
He shouldered his pack, pulled out a small shovel, and carefully dug up a small outcropping of the flowers.

Carrying them in his hands, he returned to the grave site and firmly planted them on it, going so far as to pour a bit of his precious water over them. Images of Carissa were mingled in his mind with those of another child, older and faceless but another innocent lost because of the Shunned and those who Shunned them.

WoW: Marked in Flesh by Anne Bishop

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. She has a linky widget at her site each week for your post and to make it easy to find posts by other people.

The purpose of the meme is to spotlight books that we are eagerly anticipating. It is fun to take a look at what others are waiting for. I have noticed that it has expanded my wishlist though. Be warned!
Marked in Flesh
Anne Bishop
March 8, 2016

I can't wait to read Marked in Flesh by Anne Bishop. This is the fourth book in The Others series which I discovered and devoured in 2015. I have already ordered a copy for my Kindle. Here is the description from Amazon:
For centuries, the Others and humans have lived side by side in uneasy peace.
