ARC Review: Ever After by Kim Harrison

Ever After
Author: Kim Harrison
Publication: Harper Voyager (January 22, 2013)

Description: The ever-after, the demonic realm that parallels our own, is shrinking, and if it disappears, so does all magic. It's up to witch-turned-daywalking-demon Rachel Morgan to fix the ever-after before the fragile balance between magic users and humans falls apart.

Of course, there's also the small fact that Rachel is the one who caused the ley line to rip in the first place, and her life is forfeit unless she can fix it. Not to mention the most powerful demon in the ever-after—the soul-eater Ku'Sox Sha-Ku'ru—has vowed to destroy her, and has kidnapped her friend and her goddaughter as leverage. If Rachel doesn't give herself up, they will die.

Forced by circumstance, Rachel teams up with elven tycoon Trent Kalamack—a partnership fraught with dangers of the heart as well as betrayal of the soul—to return to the ever-after and rescue those she loves. One world teeters on the brink of interspecies war, the other on the brink of its very demise—and it's up to Rachel to keep them both from being destroyed.

My Thoughts: This breath-taking and heart-breaking adventure kept me up well after my bedtime since I couldn't go to sleep without knowing how it was going to end. The concentration in this one is Rachel and the demons. In an earlier book, Rachel created a line in order to save her life. Now the line is draining the Ever After causing it to shrink at an alarming rate. She must fix the line—on a very short timeline—or the demons will kill her.

Rachel quickly learns that the problem has been amplified by her old enemy Ku'Sox which the demons know but they are all afraid of him and want Rachel to solve their problem for them. Ku'Sox is psychotic and wants to destroy the Ever After and the older demons. He begins kidnapping babies who are suffering from Rosewood syndrome to put more pressure on Rachel.

When he kidnaps Ceri and Trent's daughter Lucy, the excitement ramps up even as the time ticks down. Trent and Rachel have to work together and finally begin to figure out their relationship. Rachel is finally overcoming her distrust of him that has been part of her life since she was a child.

This story has both heart-pounding adventure and heart-braking loss and proceeds at a whirlwind pace.

I love how much Rachel has changed through this series and how her views of demons have changed. I love the depth of world-building in this series as the world and characters have so much depth. I can't wait to see what happens next for Rachel and crew.

  1. Awesome review! This has been a long time fave series for me as it was one of the first ones I read when I started reading more adult books rather than YA as a late teen! Cannot wait to read this one!
