It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (March 2, 2020)

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.  It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

I will be combining my YA and adult reading and purchases on this one weekly roundup.

Other Than Reading...

This was definitely not a quiet week! Monday morning I had appointments for blood work and a blood pressure check and my brother had an appointment for follow up on an eye problem. After my appointment I went out for a quick breakfast and then came home to visit all of you It's Monday friends.

I had barely begun when my brother returned home and asked me if I was up for a road trip. He had learned that he had a detached retina and an appointment was made for him in Blaine for as soon as he could get there. Since I haven't driven in the Twin Cities for a couple of years, I had to update my GPS, pack, and fill my car with gasoline before I could leave. We got to his appointment after a 2 1/2 hour drive at 3 PM. He learned that he needed to have surgery on the eye and it was scheduled at 3 PM the next day in downtown Minneapolis. We needed to find a nearby hotel and stay for two nights so that he could have the follow-up check on Wednesday morning. We had both packed only for an overnight stay.

The one thing I can say about my freeway driving in the Twin Cities which happened to coincide with rush hour on all of our trips was that we were going opposite the bulk of the traffic. My GPS correctly led me to the hotel we picked and we were pleased to find that they offered a shuttle service to the Phillips Eye Institute where his surgery was scheduled. We settled in and then went out to a Chinese restaurant that shared the parking lot with our motel for dinner.

Once he got dropped off at the Eye Institute the next day, I went for a walk to try to find more clothes since he had borrowed my second tee shirt to wear while he had his operation. Phillips Eye Institute is in a part of the Cities that I know fairly well since I was only about 6 blocks away from Uncle Hugo's Science Fiction Bookstore. I was hoping to get a new Uncle Hugo's tee shirt but found they only had a few way too large sweatshirts until their next order arrived. Further walking and some help from kind strangers directed me to a store where I found shirts that would work. When I got back to Phillips I found that my brother had been taken in early for his surgery and was almost at the recovery room.

We were shuttled back to the motel by 4:30 PM and ordered some Italian food from a restaurant that delivers to the motel. He hadn't eaten since the Chinese food the evening before and was very hungry. I had the motel's breakfast and a burger while on my hunt for clothing and wasn't quite as hungry. After eating, we spent a quiet evening with him dozing a lot and trying not to sleep on his back.

Wednesday morning we headed back out to Blaine for his follow-up appointment and then came back to Duluth. I think we got into town about 1 and had to stop at his job to let them know that he needed the rest of the week off both because he doesn't have very much vision in his right eye right now and he looks like he's been mugged. He was told that his vision will gradually get better but it could take a month before it is back to normal. Strangely enough, he is cleared to drive since you apparently just need to have vision in one eye to drive.

He has another follow up appointment on this coming Wednesday but this one is thankfully here in Duluth. I'll be going with him for his 8 AM appointment in case they need to dilate his eyes and he requires a driver.

Thursday I had appointments here in Duluth. I had a Dexa scan which indicates that my bone density is slightly improved since my previous scan two years ago. I also met with my gastroenterologist who reduced the medicine I take for my Crohn's Disease. I wasn't happy to find that our weird eating and travel had caused me to gain three pounds but I am back on my correct eating routine again now.

With all this coming and going, I am getting way behind on my reading. I am on the final Liaden Universe audiobook and then need to concentrate on catching up on my review books.

  5. Wow, it sounds like you had quite a week! I'd never heard of Uncle Hugo's Science Fiction Bookstore before, but it sounds like a great place for both books and shirts (when their inventory is in).

  13. I do hope your brother's eye surgery heals quickly. I had a scare with that late last year but turned out it was not detached. Yes, my doctor didn't seem to be too concerned about my driving while one eye was blurry and experiencing stars and floaters.
I am not familiar with the Liaden Universe books. I will have to look into them as it sounds like a series I would enjoy.
Hope you had a good week... Now I will watch for your 3/9 post.
